Kayak fishing for Australian salmon in my hobie pro angler 14 kayak. This time im chasing aggressive Australian salmon. Pound for pound these are one of the best fighting fish mini missiles of port Phillip bay. Catching them with light spinning gear in a kayak is a fun and rewarding form of fishing.
Make sure you watch until the end as things start a little slow but then a I stumble upon a school of large, mean and hungry salmon and things get a little crazy. 3 large salmon in 3 casts on 4 inch curl tail soft plastics in motor oil on a 1/6 ounce jig head. If you enjoy the video, then please subscribe to the channel. Was fishing during the peak of high tide in Port Phillip Bay south.

Great video! I went last couple weekends to Werribee south on the rocks but didn't have much luck. I'm new to fishing so don't really know what I am doing and what fish I'm after but your videos are very helpful and I learn a lot from them. Now after watching you on a kayak I want one too! Hope to see you around one day! Keep up with good work!

Thanks for your positive reply. Land base fishing can be really tough going at times. You can catch some nice Flathead and pinkies of the Werribee rock wall, but it usually requires hours and often small windows of bites between tide changes. Im glad the videos are helping pass on some time and also glad the kayak vids have inspired you. I hope to see you out there soon. Got some new vids coming out this week, so do make sure you sub the channel. Best Regards Al

Nice catch, as someone else said aussie salmon should be blead and dispatched very quickly to save eating quality, they make great fish cakes ans sashimi, but in saying this i never eat them as they are good bait😉 for this i dispatch them by brain spike but dont blead all my fish go on ice once dispatched 👍 great video keep them coming.

Look for the following. When they school in big numbers you will hear them and see them. You will see breaking water and you'll hear them which sound like gentle rapids. Birds diving into the water or congregated in one are is the best sign. A few weeks back I was on my kayak and a salmon jumped over the front of my kayak, no jokes. I caught it but there weren't any others around. It doesn't happen very often but when it does OMG. Take a look at this video and you will see exactly what I mean kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIvXmH9_bc13g7M the best salmon session I've ever seen.

Hi Tahlia, Im glad you found my channel through Facebook. Yeah I have many kayak fishing videos around Melbourne targeting a whole heap of species snapper, flathead, squid whiting and so on, make sure you check them out and sub the channel. I often catch up with other kayak anglers around Melbourne and show them a few things whilst enjoying a few good hours on the water. Here is a good example of that kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3i5YmuQgN-GeaM which was filmed at Altona last year. If your looking to target squid then have a look at this vid kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZm5fGN8i6aehLM which shares a few good tips on what to look for. Would be happy to catch up at some stage, Good luck out there. Which areas around Melbourne have you been fishing?

Hey Alan! I live in Point Cook and I fish land based around Geelong mostly, Altona, st Leonard’s for squid and sometimes go down towards Sandringham and Mornington way if I have time. I LOVE fishing and squidding. We just got our kayaks today. I’ve been squidding off a kayak before but never at Altona, I’m looking for my local spots to pick up squid and now that I know you can catch a few flatties at Altona, I’m keen to head out there! I am so intrigued by watching you fish with lures and soft plastics, blows my mind.. I have no idea how to use them. I own a fair bit of it though but have never caught a fish on them haha! Would love to learn how to fish with soft plastics, keen to get out with some other local kayakers, so let me know when you go out to Altona again! Cheers for the reply 👍🏻

Love your videos mate and DAMN that water looks calm as hell! Went out this weekend gone here in Brisbane and it was a savage battle against the wind. My partner's parents live in Melbourne and we visit sometimes, where abouts is this video filmed, if I can ask? Completely respect the honey hole rules and if you prefer not to say, but lord I'd love to get on some salmon like that once a year when we visit!

Yeah it sure was calm that morning, however the conditions in Melbourne have been so tough lately so much wind and high swell. Was nice to finally get some nice conditions over the long weekend. This was done at Altona, not to far from the main pier of Millers road. Access on low tide can be tricky, but can fish very well for pinkies and flathead aswell as salmon and squid. Hope that helps, thanks for the positive comments

They were bled out as soon as I got the kayak in the shallows, which was prob 5 minutes after they were caught. Personally I don't eat them but I have some friends that love them so I keep them for them. They collected them that afternoon. And yes they should be bled out supposed to have a big difference on the taste and quality of the flesh.

do you even use your fish finder to find the fish you catch? hahaha i was out at altona that morning and nothing was coming on the sounder.
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly for me the sounder only works if you go over a school of bait fish or a school of pinkies. Even know most of the times were only fishing between 4-6 meters deep the sounder doesn't really pick up flathead, salmon or squid unless your lucky. I'm always looking out for bait balls and hoping some predator fish are near by. Its also a great gauge for the depth and temperature. I was on a boat last week and my mate had a simrad sounder and it was amazing what that could pickup, huge difference. Funny enough that first salmon I caught there was nothing surfacing and nothing on the sounder that's why it caught me bu surprise. A very pleasant surprise. Hope to see you out there.

fishingmad i have trouble finding fish. any tips?
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 жыл бұрын
I'm still finding my way a little with the sounder. Over time I have just become very familiar with whats biting in certain areas. Eg shallow weedy areas are great for squid and whiting, so jigs and small strips of bait. flat sandy areas great for flathead so soft plastics and small strips of bait, any surface action soft plastics medium pace retrieve and if the pinkies are around they respond extremely well to soft plastics. Many of the new sounders are set and forget so im just looking for bait balls, drop offs, and and small arches or colour changes that hold the bottom that's generally a good sign of fish.
@petereaton6740
@petereaton6740 4 жыл бұрын
The sounder is used differently in a kayak than a boat by most, in a boat you search a wide area looking for fish however in a kayak you're limited somewhat by speed and distance, so you use your sounder to find structure that you know fish will come too, however in saying that you also look for schools of bait and in some cases you do look for fish.

I see you've got one installed on urs. Thanks for the help.
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 жыл бұрын
Campbell's cove can be great on its day too. Lots of squid, pinkies and big flathead. You'll have a ball fishing there as the weather gets better. Your question about the sounder is a great one. I had the same challenge when I had my native watercraft. I ended up buying the railblaza lowrance mounting kit, FV waterproof battery and a lowrance hook 2. It worked but it wasn't a tidy setup with some cables exposed. the beautiful thing about the hobie pro anglers is that they come with the transducer in the hull and ports ready to plug in. So the battery and the cables naturally sit inside the hull and sounder mounts to h-rail. What type of kayak do you have ??
