If you don’t fish a lot it will be fine to just use the uni knot. But there are stronger knots. The uni knot gives you about 80 percent of line strength. For 100 percent line strength you need to tie the following. For fluorocarbon tie a double San Diego jam. For braid tie the double uni knot. For braid to leader tie a FG knot. I have not personally tested knots for monofilament so I don’t know what the best know for it is. That is just from my own personal tests. Good video keep up the work.

Thanks so much for tuning in and the comment @temerenpfaffenberger3761. I definitely agree the uni knot is not the strongest knot out there, but I have to be honest, its a really strong knot that won't fail if the drag is set right... You have a pretty solid list there of awesome knots for strength!! That's awesome you run your own tests! I always love hearing other people's perspectives on stuff, ESPECIALLY if they are testing things on there own (I do the same exact thing.... speaking of tests... did you every tie the uni knot like a trilene knot for increased strength. So, I will actually run the line through the hook or lure twice, like a trilene knot, then tie the uni knot like normal... I find this really increases the strength of the uni knot... Just curious if you have ever tested that way of tying the uni... Great comment!! thanks so much for watching and sharing your perspective... I love talking fishing!!! Thanks again.

@@Johnnyfishalot I have played with it a little bit. I am planning on doing some knot tests with monofilament next and I will be sure to try it out more and let you know what I find out is the strongest. Keep up the good work.

I pull the spool on my bait casters out the side and pass the line through the winding guide and out the side. Then I tie the line on the spool as you show and re-seat the spool. If the line has a large diameter and the hole for the spool is tight, you may have to wiggle it thru a bit. I find the double-uni tends to catch on microguides. I prefer the blood-knot.
@Johnnyfishalot
@Johnnyfishalot 3 ай бұрын
That is a great shout @nnamrehck, to be honest that is an easier way to tie the spool, but for (maybe just being lazy) I just find it easier to wrap it twice than remove the spool haha, but yeah removing the spool would def work exactly the same as a spinning reel spool ... Yeah the uni is thin in diameter, but will catch on micro guides. I find the thinnest and most strongest knot (especially for micro guides) is the FG knot, but if the blood knot is working for you, I'd stick with that... ;) Thanks so much for tuning in and the awesome thoughtful comment. Really appreciate it! Have a great weekend.

Great how to video - Thanks. Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just take the spool out of the baitcaster though? Then thread the line through the reel; cinch the knot on the spool and then put the spool back in?
@Johnnyfishalot
@Johnnyfishalot Ай бұрын
hey @synaptik111 to answer you question directly....... YES that would be easier... to be honest, I really don't know why I don't remove the spool... I just got used to tying the line around the spool in the reel... But, yeah is way easier if you remove the spool then tie the knot then put the spool back in... ;) hope that helps. Thank you for the nice comment and for tuning in... Really appreciate it.

Double Davy is better for fly fishing. Less tag end waste
@Johnnyfishalot
@Johnnyfishalot Ай бұрын
Thanks for watching Bob... to be honest I don't tie the double davy that much, but its doesn't seem as strong as the uni knot and it definitely doesn't seem as versatile. I used to worry about tag end waste, but now I focus primarily on tying the best knot I can for the fishing situation. Have you ever use the uni for fly fishing?? Did you find it works as good as the double davy, just created more waste?

I use the uniknot for tying on hooks for bait. But for jigs or hard plastic lures I use a loop knot. The loop is good for the lure's action. And for tying mono leader to braid I use another knot, modified Albright I believe it's called. That's all the knots I need.
@Johnnyfishalot
@Johnnyfishalot 3 ай бұрын
Hey @comfortablynumb9342, yeah sounds good... sounds like you got your basis covered. I will say, I do not like the non slip loop knot if that is the fishing knot you are tying... I prefer the figure of 8 loop knot for my lures. I'm also not sure if a loop knot offers any more action on a jig head than a correctly tied Palomar knot or even a Palomar knot tied to a fishing clip or fisherman's clip... But, its all a matter of preference in the end. Have you noticed a considerable difference in your lures action or your fish you've caught using a loop knot vs a fishing clip or knot directly to your lure??
@alienxyt
@alienxyt 2 ай бұрын
You need a loop knot too
@Johnnyfishalot
@Johnnyfishalot Ай бұрын
Thanks so much for the comment @alienxyt I'd say it depends how and what you are fishing for... loop knots are terrible for ultralight fishing and if your in surf where you are going to be changing out your plugs often I'd recommend a fisherman's clip so you save time and get your lures in front of more fish. I'd also recommend the figure of 8 loop knot for your loop knots if you haven't tried that already. Thanks again for watching and the comment.

haha Thanks Frank... its tough to film, instruct, get knots in frame and not mispronounce things all at the same time. Not sure what part I messed up there, but yes spools are what you buy with the line on them and spools are also on your reels where the line goes. Thanks.
