It appears I misspoke. The range of Barbie dolls offered is quite diverse, so the diversity we see in Barbieland DOES make sense: shop.mattel.com/collections/barbie-dolls.

I’m a former Barbie designer from 2007-2012. Gloria’s daughter Sasha is a callback to Barbie’s rivals The Bratz who disrupted the doll industry. The ‘gang of four’ in the cafeteria resemble the My Scene characters (My Scene was Mattel’s answer to the Bratz), so the girls were meant to be a double-corollary for both the Bratz and My Scene dolls. Sasha is the name of the Black Bratz character who is the most outspoken member of the group. Ironically, I work for MGA now and I just designed the Bratz Pretty N Punk Sasha which just hit the market last week.

I’m 40. My daughter is 16. You’d be surprised at how diverse Barbie’s have become. They have different ethnicities and (somewhat) different body shapes and sizes. I don’t think they have any Queer representation though. My daughter loved playing with her Black Barbies with natural hair.

I’m an early gen z, me and every girl I knew growing up definitely played w/ Barbie. I think the daughter was alluding to the fact that Barbie placed this unattainable and “rigid” standard of beauty onto young girls. When I was younger, Barbie wasn’t as diverse as it is now and that was only over a decade ago lol.

Love your review as always. I grew up in the 90s with Barbie’s and at 31 still collect them. Just have to mention, if you follow the current line of Barbie from this year, they are diverse! They have short Barbie, curvy Barbie, Barbie’s with a variety of disabilities. They even have a Barbie of Laverne Cox who is transgender. In that sense, I felt they accurately represented them in the movie. The doctor Barbie in the movie was portrayed by a transgender actress. As a trans woman myself I love to see that representation! Overall I loved the message of the movie. Side note, I did have the pregnant Midge doll growing up lmao

same. like, I know that gender swapping satire to make a point has been done before. an episode of Sliders way back when... and the message could've been more nuanced or.. etc. but this wasn't that kind of movie. I think of this movie kindof like pop punk. and yeah, ditto. for what it does, it does it really well. I have some nitpicks or complaints. but I think it's a great movie. I saw it twice. plus, a fun theater experience with everybody dressed up. ...I think maybe it helps to have experienced misogyny and to be in your 40s to really appreciate this movie too.

It's very interesting hearing your take, I watched a couple of Barbie movie reviews (Moist Critical, Nostalgia Critic) but there was this one reviewer whose main issue was that "Barbie was the biggest man-hating movie" and "mothers should be ashamed to let their daughters watch it." From the sounds of your review, Ken had some realization and development and Barbies acknowledged them as individual people. Really curious to watch this movie myself.

Here’s an interesting wrinkle: I know a lot of parents who are asking if they can take their kids. And I didn’t know how to answer that. I wouldn’t take anyone under 16 because of all the double entendre. The jokes are clever and the audience laughed nonstop but I don’t think kids would get it. This is an adult comedy not a kids movie.

I actually wasn't going to see it based on so many negative reviews but your review as well as some others talking about the emotions they experienced made me run out and see it at the last minute Saturday evening on opening weekend. Still able to get a very good seat. One thing all reviewers, including you, are leaving out is that the Barbieland is influencing toy sales and demand for toys. When Barbieland turned to Kendom, there was a scene back in the real world at Mattel where pallets of toys were being delivered for Ken houses and it was mentioned that there was a huge demand for those toys. I think that influenced the execs to visit Barbieland to see what was going on. Also, the Ken doll's weapons were typical toys the kids would have to use in their own inventory, which probably meant the kids were fighting in the real world to also bring it back to Barbieland.

I loved the film it was so fun to watch in a packed cinema, all of the audience that went was 18+ in my theatre. It was quite a flawed film though, it felt very cramped with ideas and underdeveloped character arcs, I wish they ditched the whole Mattel story arc, I understand that they were suppose to be like the men in suits were suppose to be like the monkeys in Wizard of Oz, but it just felt like so much was going on, I forgot they were even a part of the movie a few times. I totally agree with the daughter point, I understand they wanted to cater to children too, but I think she could have been a more meaningful film with just America, maybe they could have shown scenes with America playing with Barbie as a child. i still loved it though, I was obsessed with Barbie as a kid and it made me feel really sentimental watching. Ryan was amazing too.

I really identified with the daughter in the movie. I remember growing up and my mom wanting me to play with barbies, but I outgrew them very quickly and at one point felt embarassed for ever liking them. Even came home from college to find my mom going through our stash, dreamhouse, pink corvette, and all. When they revealed it was the mom who was playing with the barbie, I cried because it truly hit me how my mom felt, combined the existential thought of getting older and eventually losing your parents, while parents try to hang onto your youth. Definitely appreciated the mother daughter dynamic and felt it added many layers on how different generations view femininity and growing up in general.

Accolades? This movie was awful. It is woke, but the character development was awful, Will Ferrell was annoying, and the message was heavy-handed and overly simplistic. The idea that women can't ever be right from a character with zero issues in her own life was ridiculous. Maybe if they actually showed that it could work, but her daughter hating her is because of her, not patriarchy.

Thank you! I really wanted to listen to something objective and that could summarize the movie. Now I actually want to see it so thank you for being objective.

Just saw it. I thought the ending was really disappointing. They should have suggested that the kens and Barbies work together as equals moving forward but instead, they decided to be petty and keep them relegated as second class citizens like in the “real world”. Annoying as hell.

It was reflecting how it took women decades in the real world for equality, so in baribland it will take the kens decades too. I didn't have issue with that as make sense but did had an issue off not having one single non stupid, useless, asshole male.....and I am an woman

The scene where Will Ferrell freaks out in Barbie land when he sees pregnant Barbie was extremely hilarious. Reason being is because they did discontinue that Barbie and that's because when it came out little girls were trying to cut their pregnant mom's stomach open to get the baby out

I don’t think the problem was Mattel, it was the writing. The plot was bad, they were doing just way too much. I could not stand Sasha’s character and the Mattel corp storyline was so unnecessary.

I had designed and hand sewed clothes for my smallest (but still thick waisted) baby girl doll. Was that one of the reasons I was not allowed a Barbie doll as a child? That there was never a sewing teacher Barbie?

It’s so weird to say that “real” Barbies don’t reflect that when they have every shape, color, and size of Barbie you can imagine. Down Syndrome Barbie, Quadriplegic Barbie, Wheelchair Barbie… unless I misunderstood something, that doesn’t make sense.

I have a confession and question: as a Barbie-o-phile (?) was the "Kissing Barbie" in the movie? It was one of mine as a kid, I loved her chiffon dress covered in itty-bitty tinyred lips and she came with tube of pink heart-shaped lipstick? 😂😂 ( Don't laugh I'm old enough to recall Barbies that came with hands predrilled holes ready for the diamond ring..wow, we messed up so many girls 😬). *As a STEM woman and former STEM kid* I will neither confirm nor deny if I still have her, lol 😂. .... I love science and beautiful clothes..The Oscar de LaRenta Barbie [designer wardrobe collection to clarify] was a monetary sacrifice of my entire summer childhood stash!

omg I had forgotten... that's right... they should've put that in the movie, the pre-drilled holes in the hand for the wedding ring. now that you said it, a memory came back.... omg. ooooof. ...I also remember the "math is hard" era...

Surprisingly, I didn't hear them mention my one burning question: Is Ken anatomically correct? That's always been the joke and I would be shocked if they didn't put it in the movie.

I have to give credit that at least they tried to make this interesting and take some liberties. but isn't it scary that this world we live in is so corporatized from the media to politics to everything has to go through that corporate filter. This corporatized world we live in leaves of bad taste in my mouth.

this film is such a white feminist think piece, if you replace every character with a cis white person the story would not change
