I really enjoyed your review of Emilia Perez, and appreciated you talking about how blown out of proportion the controversy is. I didn’t like the movie nearly as much as either of you, and had several flaws with it, but really appreciated hearing both of yours’ viewpoints. It does seem like it’s coming more from social media voices that have no business putting on “film critic” hats.

100% agree on the Emilia Perez take. I think a lot of people use the “phobia” take to shame ppl into agreeing with them or to shut them down.

I agree with what you said about Emelia Perez. You have the right to like a film without getting attacked for it. That's completely uncalled for. People have a right to like what they like and to dislike what they dislike. Simple as that.

I saw Jacques Audiard interviewed at an Aero Theater showing of "Emilia Perez," and he did not come across as a director who had any ill intent in making the movie. As you both mention, it's a musical, not a documentary, and should be viewed in those terms (it reminded me of 1975's "Tommy," the out-there Ken Russell screen adaptation of the Who's rock opera, that is wild, memorable and, for me, moving).

I was in rehab 5 years ago and became close friends with another man who is also recovering alcoholic. While i was there i had the opportunity to sit in a group family therapy session with his parents and sister. During which, both his parents talked about a situation that happened when their son was about 8-9 years old. Father was replacing a door in house. And the boy had bumped into the door leaning against the wall, it fell onto of him. And he hit his head hard into the door/floor. Knocking him out. Parents took him to hospital but nothing major was found then. But both parents swear to this day that incident had a huge impact on his life. Personality and behavior changed. And ultimately they blamed themselves for his addiction issues later in life. This really stuck with me, because back in 2008 i was involved in a major roll over car accident. And after that i had a noticeable change in my mood. And mainly my confidence. I always second or third guess myself now. And have a major fear of the worst thing happening. My friends and family also say i changed post accident. And i was so stubborn back in 2008, i never did any follow up visits to see how my head was affected by accident. Sorry this is so long. But personally i believe that something like what happened to this young boy probably did and will have a major impact on his life. Even with bad parents not looking over him, if it was the cities fault, they should have to pay a very large amount.

I feel from what Nick says about being summoned for this duty...there could be no better time than when there are major distractions 🤣Why? Because, the randomness of wildfires, is beyond your control, 😅 but the case could give you *respite* by at least determining its outcome with your vote I guess😉☺

The discussion of the terms "black" and "colored" reminds me of how I can't get reconciled to the use of the word "queer" in academia now or how my Mexican-American friends feel about Latinx.

19:02 - 19:35 The entire read was glorious, but this is so true and in the current political climate in America, needs to be heeded by those the system is criminalising for their skin colour, life choices, and orientation. There is a targeted attempt at deleting people's very identity, and those people are fighting about who's the most perfect at recognizing identity

Such powerful words regarding the criticism you received- you can still admire someone’s artistic talent and not agree with their views.

I just want to say that I'm really enjoying your channel which I recently discovered. Great art should offend people!!! Some of these people should stick to movies like Star Wars where good vs evil is clear and it all takes place in a galaxy far far away so as not to offend anyone. Humans are complex and irritating. Great art ALWAYS embodies dissonance and resolution and the resolution is often a bit unsettling as is life. Sometimes the artists make the audience feel that dissonance. For example ... "Initially, the critical reception was mixed. Some hailed it as a masterpiece, while others were bewildered by its complexity and unconventional approach." Am I talking about Emilia Perez? No!!! This is a quote concerning the first performance of Beethoven's ninth symphony, one of humanities greatest artistic achievements.

Hello✨ I haven't watched Emilia Perez but when I watched that Selena Gomez scene trying to speak spanish and talk with a mexican accent... I'm puertorican and I understood 100% why mexicans were mad, my goodness she sounded horrible!!! Maybe you guys didn't noticed because you don't speak spanish and I think the director doesn't know spanish either because how he let that pass!! 😂 Also Selena Gomez has been 20 years in the industry, talking about her latina roots and didn't even put effort in pronouncing the words at least a little bit better Idk .. to me that's lazy work and even disrespectful to be honest.

Yes to the Emilia Perez commentary. It was one of the most interesting and enjoyable films I've seen this year. I'm so glad it got so many Oscar nods. I think Zoe is up for lead actress along side Demi Moore for The Substance. I'd be happy if either one won.

Two things: In todays world,, where power and influence is a function of money and capitalism, I boycott. I'm fine missing out on a Mel Gibson movie because I don't want my money going to him, as he supports causes that go against my beliefs. That’s how I separate the artist from the art, I don’t critique it- I simply dont participate. The same way I don’t use Facebook, Amazon or twitter. (To your point). I agree with your take on the current discourse on Emilia Perez. I'd only say that at times, it might seem like you guys are doing the same with Tyler Perry. Not the same to me, but you know how internet people are - zero nuance. Anyways..I always enjoy your jokes, banter and how honest you guys are. 👏

I am also in the minority of people who enjoyed Emilia Perez. I am happy that Zoe got an Oscar nomination, and it’s sad that all this negativity over the film is over shadowing the historic nomination of Karla Sofia Gascon.

I get being upset if someone enjoys a movie that’s blatant Nazi propaganda-but Flight Risk isn’t that. It’s easy to separate the art from the artist in this case because Gibson keeps his politics out of the film. Some movies, like Daily Wire’s Lady Ballers, are pure propaganda-openly transphobic, with every joke aimed at mocking trans people. It’s a terrible film made for terrible people. But Emilia Perez isn’t that. Flight Risk isn’t that. In fact, you have to give Gibson some credit for making a film that doesn’t push his personal beliefs and is just an entertaining watch for anyone.
