This actually seems like a good plot, if not a little gross. A little Munchausen without the proxy.😄 This sounds very interesting.

That "brother/sister" joke is made several times and seems like the ultimate diss! I have a friend who has ZERO chemistry between her boyfriend and herself, so one of our mutual friends assumed he was her brother. It's kind of embarrassing for them, but a telling narrative in the film as the two have no love between them. Also, the agent who likes to capitalize on women who have some "deficit" is symbolic of a culture that DOES glorify victimization. I don't know if you remember when Aimee Mullins became a fashion darling for being beautiful and having no lower legs. When she walked the runway for people like Gaultier and Chanel they made her special prosthetics - AND she was on the cover of all the trendy fashion/lifestyle magazines. It's like Signe is a version of that gone too far. How much "deformity" are we willing to exploit and covet?

Yes!! Thank you both for a very amusing review... and a 3.5 very good rating! This movie sounds hysterical and right up my alley... a good dark comedy that is off the beaten path. I am looking forward to seeing this soon. Thanks gentlemen!! 😍

Hi Nick and Joseph . Really enjoyed your review and insights into the movie. I don't think a lot of people get satire.

😀A black comedy in a foreign twist! When I heard Nick say "un certain regard" with such flourish, *that* already sounded like a foreign language to my ear - *and then* I hear the Movie, it's set in Norway - "Oslo." I could almost 'see' Fran Drescher from "The Nanny" somewhere in this type of comedy - she was cloying for attention 24/7!

A visible ailment is far worse than an emotional one. And usually the former leads to the latter anyhow. If my face was maimed and I had to listen to a bunch of people whine about sh*t they could hide, I would probably be more than ready to snap and tell THEM to STFU. I’m amazed that this film played that line the other way around because it’s ridiculous. A visible deformity is soul-destroying and affects every and any interaction you have with someone, how you’re perceived, how you identify with yourself..much worse than other forms of grief or emotional gripes.

I think the film playing the line that way and being ridiculous is the point

I just stumbled upon this movie surfing the higher channels and stopped to watch it on Showtime. I found most of it very disturbing, yet, actually watched the entire movie because I sort of got lost between the reality and the imaginary thinking the ending would clarify it but it didn’t. I was so puzzled that I began to look for more information about this movie and learned that it is a dark comedy. Thanks to you both for assisting me. I had come to the conclusion that Norwegian people had a totally different manner of social behavior than Americans. Now, I get it and could find some humor in it. By the way, I am an upper tier baby boomer😳who is still rather stunned.

First movie in aeons that captivated me! In the worse ways, it's gross and I hated Signe within 20 minutes. Like a car crash you cannot look away. Whoever made this film is genuis! Please recommend similar films 🙏🏻

Saw it last Friday. Signe is a great character to have in a movie but I'm just not sure that the movie itself was as good. Her boyfriend has similar attention seeking issues and it would make sense that he would recognise that aspect of her. This happens in the nut allergy scene where he is competing with her for the attention of everyone in the room. This is maybe the best scene in the movie where it shows more than just her own selfish attention seeking actions. The group therapy scenes are great as well where there are other attention seeking patients who put her down and I wish there were more of these scenes. As the movie goes on you see her willing to go further and really damage her body to keep gaining attention but the movie doesn't really dwell on the tragedy of this. You feel shocked while watching her and there's a certain uncomfortable comedic element to some of the scenes. But no-one challenges her and the boyfriend doesn't seem to realise that she is hurting herself deliberately. This is difficult to believe. Maybe he is supposed to be too wrapped up in himself but the movie would have been better if it had developed the relationship between the two of them more, but he is hardly in any of the scenes in the final third. It's as if the movie forgets about him. Her friends unrealistically also don't seem to realise that she has these tendencies yet her drug supplier that she doesn't seem to know that well explains at one point in the movie that she lies all the time and is not to be trusted. There are some good scenes which initially seem to be real but are actually playing out in her head which express her inner guilt. Overall, she's a great character, it has some great moments and some great scenes but the screenplay is all over the place. It could have been really good but still worth watching.

Yes, I think the boyfriend is supposed to be too self-absorbed to even care and actually notice she is doing this to herself. I remember him just being repulsed when he visits her at the hospital, was he there during the interview being jealous? It's been some time since I've watched it. I agree that I somehow expected more from the movie. It didn't go much further beyond what it promised in the trailer.

So the group therapy scene was meant to be taken as some form of satire or for humor/irony? Because idk how any serious person could actually dismiss a visible deformity as less worthy of complaint than any covert emotional disturbance. It’s the other way around.
