I think people who are introverts will really connect with this movie. People who struggle to make friends or meaningful relationships while others around them seem to have no problem. Often times the first thing people blame are their looks. While the movie does show there are advantages to having good looks (Edward is able to get laid and he gets a better job) it shows that there was a deeper personality issue at play. While improving his looks got him superficial successes, it didn't get him the one thing he really wanted which was a deep meaningful relationship. I thought this movie was really good. I think it got it's point across in a way that avoided feeling apathetic and patronizing to people who struggle with relationships.

I agree with your summary except i didn't enjoy the movie. Something was missing, i found myself thinking of leaving early cuz i just didn't really care about him fully

I definitely enjoyed the first half and connected with his struggle of wishing he knew how to be more dynamic in his life, but the ending felt way too on the nose with metaphor and kind of a predictable devolving into craziness, an annoying tendency of many American films

I think this movie explains perfectly what happens to people who deeply feel the need to change, but are not able to express themselves or even find a way to connect to their Image of themselves. Also ist is showing how therapy (which, with a good therapist, i believe should ultimately Work as a Tool to changing your (mental) image of yourself) fails, because you learned or taught yourself not the way you approach Life with all its difficulties and the Problems to Connect to Others stay the same. Visually this represents perfectly Edward being in a cast at the Showdown, because he simply can Not find any ways to think or move in other directions anymore. He has given up on himself, and realizes he wanted to be seen and appreciated by really the wrong Kind of people for him (the director is really a shallow person, but her being an extrovert and showering him with Attention First makes Edward want to be Like her, and after that he only longs for the Life he ledt.) also He wants to feel included without being able to make himself Seen or even, like being pictured in the last scene, expressing any Wish of His own. I really think, socially anxious people can relate to that.

In a way it sounds like Ingred is fetishizing Edward and Oswald. Like she gets to be special cause she's with someone special.

I really love how thoughtful and comprehensive your reviews are, and how much attention you pay to the small nuances of films. There's an idea that attention paid is evidence of how much love there is for someone or something. It's clear you love film, as you devote so much of your free time to thoughtfully reviewing it. That is very appreciated, such a nice change in our superficial/sound bite culture.

I enjoyed the HR training/industrial film bit. I've had to watch a lot of corporate HR films, and the patronizing tone was spot on.

The most poignant scene for me was at the end, wen he looks across the restaurant and happens to notice a depressed emo woman siting and being totally broody, probably going through the exact same thing he is, and it's like he's been obsessing over the wrong person the whole movie and his perfect partner or exact counterpart is sitting right there, he's literally wasted his life wit the wrong people. It's powerful because it happens so fast and if you get it when it happens you really get it and the instant is over in a split second.
@StevenE-l9y2 ай бұрын
I didn't interpret it that way. I didn't think he saw her as a romantic partner but rather he saw his problem in her. Because she's very attractive like him but alone. It's suggested she has the same personality flaw. I think when he saw her he realized that the main problem was never his looks but rather the way he projected himself to others. I'm not convinced the movie was trying to say spend time only with people who are just like you.

A different man using The Bluest Eye is weird bc there is an overarching message about embracing who you are as you are, there is a racial component that makes the book, weird to reference in this white man’s life. That really took me out of the film honestly

Overall, your review was very detailed and well-observed - my disappointment was how sniffy and dismissive you were about such an excellent film. In his use of incisive social commentary and clever visual metaphors, Aaron Schimberg should be applauded for creating something of such unique quality - “A Different Film” you could say. Also your demeanour was like a pair who’d had a bad visit to the dentist or who’ve been reflecting on a depression end of year company report - this is meant to be the entertainment industry so share the joy and have fun with it. Cheer up guys!

For me the most interesting element was who was exploiting who when Edward starts his sexual/working relationship with Ingrid and I think it would’ve been a more interesting film had it stayed in that discomfort and explored it further, rather than this seeming impulse so many movies have to go off the wall in the third act and completely change keys

This movie feels little 'uncomfortable.' The characters, the 'friendships' maybe, questionable? Just like the "Trophy Wife" - so convenient, a Playwright is the charmed neighbour, she lives for Drama, as a Dramatist she's open-minded...But, I guess like your opinions on it, this plot can hold its own in this genre!
