Damn, Nazgul is basically a passive version of the modern, definitely similar in the mids

i started my guitar life in 1987, with an EMG 81. i have played, and owned countless guitars and amps since then, always having an 81 equipped guitar in my rig. over the past 10 years or so, i have been exploiting the pickup (r)evolution, to see what is out there. being a metal player, my choice in pickups revolve around tight compression in the low, and bite without shrill, in the high. yes, amps and cabs play a huge role in this, but other than a Kemper, i have used a 5153 2x12 as my main sound for that decade, so the field is even. i have not tried everything, but have tried out a lot of fucking pickups. i am pushing 50 now, and have curbed my GAS a little, and decided to update a great old Jackson i have. so after 30+ years of chasing tone, my pickup choice for my rebuild, is an EMG 81. maybe it is just familiarity, maybe my brain is just trained to prefer that particular tone. i started with an EMG 81, and i will end with an EMG 81. great reviews, long time subscriber.

These videos have been super helpful with my perpetual tone chasing! Few pickup comparison videos are done as well as these. I'd really love to see the PRS \m/ treble and bass pickups go up against some heavy hitters. Not many comparison videos for those pups.

I really love the Nazgûl tone. And is why I change to a coil split tone to take all the possible tones from this great pickup

I bought a set of Fishman Moderns, at first, I absolutely loved them, easy early ABR tone with no effort. But the DiMarzio Fusion Edge pups in my other guitar can achieve that *and* retain more dynamics. After that & many other test results of mine, buyer's remorse started to set in and this comparison makes is more like a disease than a spell of dissatisfaction. And due to some, "installation issues" I can no longer return them. EDIT: Also, the stupid "half-cocked-wah" sound of the moderns absolutely grinds my gears.

I just received a set of Moderns yesterday, but for now only going to use the bridge pickup..kinda funny I am removing a SD Nazgul so I can install the modern in there..and the pickup that was before the Nazgul was a Black Winter,my favorite bridge pickup. I did put the Black Winter in where the Nazgul started life,in my Schecter Blackjack, and it as you guessed it it sounds amazing..but the Nazgul in my KNE custom bodied build is so tight and does sound great, but its not so great for soloing or being able to get pinch harmonics, which I like to do..riffing,chugging etc it rules . I did listen to your video here and think its probably the best I've heard yet..and its allowed me to hear the Modern vs the Nazgul..voice 1 there was a noticeable difference..voice 2 passive was very similar to the Nazgul on several tracks here, and got me wondering if I'm ready to do the swap to the Modern..we'll see..........Great production and high quality sounds you got here.. I had to subscribe after hearing this video.

I think they sound very similar with distortion. The Fluence sound just a bit louder but if you adjust the volumes they are really similar.

The Nazgul is great, but I prefer the taming of the high end from the Fishman's and a little tighter bottom end. The Holcombs are almost identical, but with a little less harsh top end.

Likewise, coming from emg 81'' I just thought thr Fishman would give me the sane clean tone with a higher output. Yeeh the output was higher but the compression drove me insane. I then went with SD's to give me more of a clean and organic sound. If I want more compression I csn add it on my amp/pedals. Where I can't take that compression like wah tone from the Fishman.

After years of testing I found my Gral with the Fishman Fluence. A few days ago, however, I received a Ruf guitar with the Nazgul/Sentinel combination and I'm really curious what can come out of it.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting the set of comparisons with the Fishman Modern pickups. Unfortunately, at least so far, they sound terrible. Looks like I’m still in the hunt for an active replacement for my EMG’s.

The killswitch set sounds fantastic imo but I also like the moderns a lot

I have a set of Fishman fluence moderns and they're my favorite active pickups. I find the EMGs to be a bit shrill, which is fine for super high gain or full strum scenarios but I think the Fishman articulates much better. Also, the alcino neck pickup in the Fishman set is very vibrant and by far my favorite clean sound from an active pickup. That being said, I always end up putting SD JB/59s in all my guitars because passive pickups have a warmth that I can't seem to get from an active. I've listened to comparisons and the Nazgul seems to be somewhere in between an active and JB sound, but to me the Omega sounds a bit warmer while still having some of the clarity you expect from an active. The Nazgul and Omega seem to be my favorite passive pickups. I have a set of Alpha Omegas on the way, can't wait to try them out!

@@finnancahill2644 I really don't want to have to switch my Fishmans, especially since going from active to passive means I have to resolder new pots (actives have lower resistance.) I even contemplated buying the PRS Mark Holcomb but the last thing I need is another guitar. Since all my others already have passives and I really love my Schecter SLS Elite FR, I'm gonna suck it up and switch them. 😁

I’ve had both and the Nazgûl definitely sounds better. The only thing I don’t 100% dig is it’s high mids, but still, sounds better to my ears than the moderns. 🤷♂️
