I've played for 40 years. "The Industry" is trying to "split hairs" in pushing products. Nanoscopic comparisons between products are futile. Frank Zappa said it decades ago... "Shut up and play your guitar." "The Industry" has been trying to sell the "Holy Grail" of tone for decades. A good amp, a good cab, a good guitar, good pickups, and lots of practice is the secret sauce. Plain and simple! Period! You younger generation of guitarists are led to believe if you keep dumping dollars to purchase the next latest and greatest product is the road to nirvana, (not the band). The world of guitar went from analog to digital, back to analog, then back to digital. Some guitarists know exactly what I'm saying.

I guess I really missed the point of a guitar pickup shootout video by showing the differences between two products so that consumers won't HAVE to dump dollars into a product that might not be for them instead of basing it of the mentality "Shut up and play your guitar". What was I thinking?!

@RTMvideos

@@veglord4481 Generally speaking his point may be correct, however it comes across as very condescending given that it's just a video comparing two different sets of guitar pickups. The whole point is that people who are interested in these pickups can determine how they sound WITHOUT buying both and dumping tons of money into the endless toan road.
@GerryTrevino

@@veglord4481 Not trying to be snarky (okay, maybe a little), but while I totally get this guy's point, I feel like this is hardly the place for that. That's like if I went to a car dealership and started going up to each costumer and telling them that they were stupid for trying to decide between Car A and Car B while imploring that a bicycle can do the same job just fine. Not once in the video did I claim that these pickups were better or worse than anything else on the market or that focusing on gear is going to make you a better guitarist. Like, sorry for letting this free content disappoint you...

The pickups were closer in sound to one another than I would have thought! That said, I prefer the sound of the classics because they were sweeter with the clean sounds. The moderns were a but tighter in the low-mids which seemed to be a bit snappier for the djent style, but the cleans had the "brangy" clang that all other high-output pickups seem to produce using clean amp settings. Since I don't play djent, the classics were much more suited to my tastes and playing style! thx

Yeah, the modern clean tone has that stale quality active's can be bashed for, although I've never had them in a guitar to hear w/my own ears. The classics though, if you get the SS single width for a Strat HSS configuration, the tone is phenomenal. I got them because I had to swap out my Strat body to an ultra light wood because of back problems & was told the more steady & powerful signal from actives would negate the resonance you can get with Paulownia. Holy wow, did I mistakenly walk into the best tone I've ever had. I have that chime-y bell like clean tone, & then I can fool around & crank out metal. Dream come true.

@@GerryTrevino I'm going to put a Classic on the bridge, and a Modern on the neck :) Then with push/pull tone pots and a three-way switch, I get 6 great options: Modern1, Modern2, Classic1, Classic2, Both1, Both2. Plus with two volume knobs, that gives me a zillion extra ways to mix both of them. I love the cleans, and I ran your raw DI files through my custom processing setup on my DAW and it sounded fantastic for the distortion, so, I'm excited about that.

Absolutely love my modern 7's. I have started to play that guitar with moderns more than my schecter with a JB/59 set. They both sound great but when you get the Fishmans set up with all the options selectable from toggle switches and a lightly heavier string gauge then normal they just sound so fucking good and can do ANY tone. They only real drawback to Fishmans(if you have them set up right) is that being active they don't play well with my fuzz face and treble booster that I built. Those older style pedals really need a colder signal. But the Fishmans work amazingly well with all my other effects. But with the Fishmans you really don't need a boost. The preamp built into the pickups is the boost. The tone I get from the Fishmans in my Ltd going into my Marshall DSL100HR is perfect in every channel. I just roll back the volume a bit and the tone a tiny bit and the roll up the volume when I want a boost. They honestly sound and feel amazing to play. But I hated them the first year I had them. It took a lot of getting used to what worked and what didn't but I mainly just needed to put a bit heavier gauges on that guitar and tune down a semitone to Eb (Bb on a 7). With my regular gauges (10-48 with a 68 for b) the Fishmans sounded thin. Not bad just not as good as what I knew they could sound like. So I tried out a bunch of gauges until I came up with the perfect set that sounds so fucking good with the moderns, and they really can get any tone now(yes it was a pain in the ass havong to try new gauges etc. but it was 100% wothout a doubt worth it and im sure anyone else would agree if they got to play a foshman equipt guitar set up corre tly for fishmans).The gauges i use now for the 25.5 scale Ltd with Fishman moderns are 105, 14, 18, 26, 38, 50, 68. But tuned a half step down/Eb (Bb for a 7 string) the tension is very very similar to the tension youd get with a 10-48 set in standard tuning on a 25.5 scale guitar. Anyways I just wanted to share my experience. I think that Gibson scale guitars (24.75") like lee pauls would be PERFECT for Fishmans cause you could use slightly heavier gauges and still have normal tension in standard. Plus Les Paul's are warmer sounding guitars. Both of those factors make Les Paul style guitars perfect for fishman pickups. You could use regular gauges on a fender scale (25.5") guitar with Fishmans for sure. It's not a bad sound by any means it's just a tiny bit thin (the hf tilt can help with that) but its not as good as Fishmans can sound like with the ideal scale length or gauges. I wish I knew that at first so I could have set up my guitar properly for Fishmans to begin with. They literally sound so good now that I'm upset at the fact that I missed out on a whole year of great tone cause I didn't know that my regular 10-48's on a 25.5 scale wasnt ideal fir fishmans. I'm certain there's people who get a great tone with Fishmans on a 25.5 scale in standard with 10's. Again it wasn't a bad tone at all it just wasn't as good as I now know they can sound.

@@brianburke808 The coil splitting tabs at the base of the pickups are different than the 3rd voicing. When you use the tabs to split the pickup it's just splitting the pickup, north or south coil, in whichever voicing is selected, so you're getting half a pickup in voice 1 or voice 2. Voice 3 is a separate voicing made to sound exactly like a real single coil and differs a pretty good amount from a split voice 1 or 2

The differences aren’t dramatic. Do the differences come across more in feel while playing the different PUs and voicings? Suggestion: Add a driven amp, crunch tone and roll off to clean. That’s the test of a good pickup if it can clean up well without loosing highs.

I still wish I could find someone with a Keith Merrow pickup in a hellraiser. I like how the classics even out the brightness of the hellraiser but also like the tone of the moderns since it brings out deffinition on the low end. I'm thinking since the Merrow's were designed with his signature Schecter they should be perfect for the hellraiser but that price tag is a rough gamble lol. Room mate put the Will Adler's in his Schecter Demon and they sound perfect in that setup. I might just have to bite the bullet and try it.

I am so confused... when you go to purchase a modern humbucker, some say alnico, and some say ceramic... I thought these were active pickups? and I thought they had changeable voicings? Can someone make me understand this.
@GerryTrevino
@GerryTrevino 3 жыл бұрын
To sum up your questions...that is all true haha. Typically when you buy the Fishman Fluence Modern set, it comes packed with a ceramic pickup and an alnico pickup (typically the ceramic goes in the bridge and the alnico goes in the neck, although you can put which ever one in what ever pickup position that you'd like hence why they sell them separately, that's the way I had them set up in this video). While it's true that you need a battery for these pickups, calling them straight up active pickups really does them injustice since they also offer other types of Fluence models such as the Classic Humbuckers and the Strat set. It you think of them as powered pickups and that the battery is just there to power the technology, I think it makes much more since. And with that technology, these pickups can offer different voicings. The Modern set can switch between an Active voice and a Passive voice, while the Classic set bridge pickup can switch between a Vintage P.A.F. voice and a Hot Rodded voice and the neck pickup can switch between a Vintage P.A.F voice and an Airy Chime voice. All the different sets of pickups that Fishman offer can vary between what the voicings can be. I hope that helps! If you liked this, consider checking out my solo EP! li.sten.to/TnIWX1e

Hey Gerry! Great comparison. I had a question for you that is somewhat related to this video. I'm about to go for a custom 8 string build soon, and currently deciding between different pickups. I was initially planning to go for the DiMarzio Ionizers, but was told that Dimarzios have a huge wait time currently so unfortunately can't get them. After considering all the factors, I have narrowed down my choices to the *Seymour Duncan Alpha Omega* set, and the *Fishman Fluence Modern* set. Since you have experience with both these sets, how do you think they would compare? I intend to play music that is similar to Periphery, Monuments, etc., but some versatility would be great as well. I want something that is tight and articulate with a good amount of dynamics. And also, since the Fluence Modern set has blades instead of individual pole pieces, they can be used in a multiscale guitar as well. Whereas the Alpha Omega can't be used in a multiscale. So my decision to go for a straight or multiscale is dependent on the pickup choice as well. So where do you think both the pickups stand in terms of my needs? And also I heard that the Fluence Moderns eat up batteries very quickly in comparison to say an EMG set. Is that true? Apologies for the long comment and I'd be grateful for your insights. Cheers!
@GerryTrevino
@GerryTrevino 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there, thank you for taking the time to watch one of my videos and congrats on your custom 8 string build! In my honest opinion, as far as versatility goes between those two sets, I'd go fo the Alpha/Omega set. The Moderns are wonderful as far as being HD versions of the EMG 81/85 set, but the Alpha/Omega are much more versatile. Now, being that you need soap bars for your build, I'd say go with the Tosin Abasi Fluence set. They are very modernly voiced and should get you what you need as far as tones go. I prefer them much more over the Moderns. While I don't have a proper demo of them as of yet, I do have them in a few of my guitars and used them for the entirety of my solo EP. As far as battery goes, I don't think that's true that they eat up batteries quickly. They seem about the same to me! I hope that helps. @@GerryTrevino Hey man! Thanks a lot for the detailed answer! Thanks for your suggestion about the Tosin set. I looked at some reviews and I really agree with your thoughts about its versatility. I really like the sounds, and the split coil voice is sick. And since they're actually somewhat cheaper than the Alpha Omega set, I might end up going for them. And yes, I have listened to your EP already (from the Helix patches video) and liked it a lot. I like the tones you were getting, so knowing they were coming from the Tosin set is awesome. It'd be great to see a walkthrough of them at some point. And on a related note, would love to see more long-format videos from you soon. Thanks again!

Because of the clearness that Fishman Fluence pickups offer, sometimes things like the high end can be too much if you're used to things like passive pickups. I'd suggest either adjusting your amp settings or engaging the High Frequency tilt option on Fluences to control some of the high end. Depending on the revision of your classics, this diagram might differ from your set, but this pretty much explains it/shows you how to wire it. www.fishman.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Classic_Humbuckers_Rev46_Connection_Functions_V3.pdf I hope that helps, if you liked this, consider checking out my solo EP! li.sten.to/TnIWX1e

@@GerryTrevino Thanks for the reply dude! Yeah they sound great clean, I noticed when I use stomps that push mids (Tubescreamer) is when it gets too much. The one video I found on the Tilt seems to cut too much back. I think I'm gonna stick with rolling the tone back and using different patches I go higher. Keep it up man!

@GerryTrevino 2 жыл бұрын
@@blainethemono19 Anytime! Rolling the tone works too, you can always wire the HFT to a push pull pot or a switch so that you don't have to permanently live with it either!

Hi, great videos. Do you think it is a good investment to change the Seymour Duncan Distortion set for the Fishman Fluence Classic in a LTD MH1000FR guitar? Is it worth it? thanks

It depends on what you're looking for sound-wise. The Seymour Duncan Distortion and the Fishman Fluence Classics are two totally different sounding beasts, but my money is on the Fishmans currently!

I can barely tell the difference with distortion, but to the extent I can hear a difference modern is a tiny bit better. Clean, classic sounds massively better. Modern clean sounds lifeless.

Hello just stumbled on this video. Was wondeing which you prefer with drop tunings? Ive been running my guitar with Classics jn drop B-C range. Am looking at dropping down to drip A and G#. Thanks in advanced

I used to have a set of Classics in a Schecter Hellraiser tuned to drop C and it was glorious! I haven't tried it in Drop A or lower, but I'm sure it'll retain all of the clarity. Thanks for watching!

What Michael said. The Modern set comes with 1 alnico and 1 ceramic pickup and traditionally the alnico is used in the neck position and the ceramic is used in the bridge position. That's the way I used them for this demo!
