Adding DIY Algae Scrubber To 125 Gallon Reef | Version 2

In this video i will be adding a different version of algae scrubber to the 125 gallon reef tank. Instead of it being plumbed into the overflow pipe and controlled by a ball valve ill be using a utility pump to provide flow to this scrubber. I will be hanging the scrubber in a way to allow fast removal for cleaning.

Why not just put the netting in the sump with a light on it?

I have the same or very similar led light and I get no algae growth where the blue colors shine on the screen. I read on a forum that you need 35 gallons per hour per inch of the screen width for best nitrate reduction. I don't like having splashing or spraying in my sump of the waterfall type scrubber so my mesh floats on the water surface while the pump washes water over it from the side. I'll be interested to see which of our designs works better.

Hey FishOfHex! i wanted to ask how much of the screen needs to be above the water vs below? I "think" i see half of yours IN the water and half above it? Does it matter? Or is it only important that the whole screen be wet from top to bottom?

I dont see it being an issue with this type of setup. Its easy to remove to clean if needed.

I have use both and honestly i get the same nutrient control.

Same nutritional control yes only you don’t have to spend a bunch on chaeto and you don’t have to worry about it dying

Growing alage where you want it reduces available foods for it go grow where you don't want it

Hey man I need help! About a week ago I added dry rock to the tank and got a small diatom bloom as expected. About 3 days ago I added some new sps and zoas to the tank and fed them reef roids. The day after I fed them the diatoms took off! I measured my nitrates and they are at 40! 1 week ago they were 2. How should I go about fixing this?

how old is the system? did you cure the rock before adding it? if not you are probably dealing with die off. Feeding the corals just added to the problem. I would up my water changes and stop feeding coral and cut back on how much you feed the fish until you get the nutrients under control
