I remember back with my first fishfinder, I got freaked out when I saw (what I didn't realize at the time) were air bubbles rising. I thought large fish were coming up from the bottom, with the bright diagonal line. 😅

I’m pretty sure you can long hold or scroll on the screen where the fish or structure is and the fish finder will tell you how far you are from that spot and it will mark it on your map.

Phenomenal Information. Thanks… My fishery consist mostly of soft bottomed (mud) canals with bunches on lay downs. The average canal is no more than 8 feet deep. The canal widths are around 75-100 ft wide. Will side imaging (transducer mounted to trolling water) work well? I have never seen one in action or used one.

Not bad, but imaging transducers don't have cones. Cones are 2D, imaging transducers take slices.

That would take a lot more image and data processing for the computer to be able to display it fast enough. That means your $700 fish finder will cost $1100.

Just something interesting I thought I'd point out as an old radar tech. ( Ra) in radar stands for RAdio. (SO) in sonar is for SOund. They work in a very similar manner.

Sorry I am jus learning about graphing, just got my first boat and I have dual lowrance Elite FS9 3-1. I have a Question. Why am I not getting a similar image on my front graph as my console graph? Both are set to the same settings. It’s not the settings what I mean is on my console down scan I will see a rock pile or side scan and then I will waypoint it. Go to the waypoint and get in the trolling motor. Look down and the downscan image isn’t what I was seeing on the console. Do I have to be trolling to get the same image like I was when I was idling ? Sorry if that doesn’t make sense. Like I said I’m new boater been fishing for a long time though. I’ve been watching the videos for a few years and I’ve learned a ton. Just was wondering why am I not getting a good clear image on the front like I was at the wheel

You do an awesome job of explaining a complicated subject. I flew F-16 is USAF and interpreting a radar image is not intuitive...whether air-to-air or air-to-ground and SAR. Obviously, some unique characteristics for sonar on a boat that make it slightly different in some aspects, so I definitely appreciate your explanation!

Are those depth changes from left to right of the boat or front to back. I’ve always seen a drop off and fished in front of me thinking the drop off is in front but if you think about it wouldn’t the drop off be toward deeper water usually farther off the bank?

I hear you are telling about a cone...but the image show cylindrical shape. The right one is a cone shape...the beam gets wider when it gets deeper. There should be a interpreter on the web. It will let you know how wide it will be at certain depth. I have my own in camera photos. Took that from a guy that went on an education about sonars

I just bought a new Tracker it came with a Lowance and I brought another one for the front. I'm not sure what happen but the only thing it dose is the death temp. and speed Can u reset them and start all over

What no one explains is if the down imaging is a flat cone shooting out left and right at the certain degree or is it a round cone shooting a big circle at the certain degree all around...... By the image on the screen I think it's got to be just a thin flat cone????

Hello there! Great video! I am about to buy a Garmin Striker fish-finder and I wonder if this equipment can function also horizontally and not only vertically. Our goal is to monitor fish passing from a specific section of a 15m-wide river. We want to station the Striker underwater on one slope of the river to record all the underwater area down to the opposite slope. (So the measured depth would be the distance of the opposite underwater slope of the river). Also, do you know if Strikers saves somewhere its recorded data (depths, time, recorded fish, monitoring video or images) so we can retrieve it for further analysis? (Like a data logger) Thank you very much!

What if your structurescan transducer is on the back of the boat.....you say theres a 2-3 sec delay, plus im fishing from the front of my boat which is @18ft away from transducer ......Do I add the length of the boat also? Or depending how deep I am ,does the cone account for the length of the boat?

The only issue i have is how do you know what part of the sonar picture corresponds to what time frame. In your examples you just gave that this part of the image is 4 seconds .... If you got that information with the speed of the boat sure you just do 5ft/sec x 4sec = 20ft like your examples. But how do you know the part of the pictures time frame ? Anyway given that last piece of info i be all set ... Am i missing a horizontal time scale i just can see your vertical depth scale. Good video starting to understand it .
