@@Matthew_Australia The funniest part is that a butter knife with a decent edge and heat treat will perform just as good as a $200 custom knife like a L.T Wright. At the end of the day, it’s a piece of compressed iron shaped and cooked. There’s only so much improvement you can make on an ancient tool. It’s ludicrous to believe otherwise. When people spend hundreds on custom knives. It’s not because they’re paying for value. They’re paying for that persons “art” if you will. When I spend $300 on a Collins. I have to ask: What is “recycled leather”? Is the sheath made from an old boot? An old football? An old wallet that’s now empty because you spent so much for the wood handle?
@jonnyboat2
@jonnyboat2 3 жыл бұрын
The sheath is probably bonded leather like they use on less expensive bibles with leather covers. It’s a leather mush of chopped up leather that has some kind of glue mixed in and then made/pressed into a sheet of leather. It’s not as strong or as easy to maintain as full grain leather.

I've been looking for a comparison review for the X7 and N7 for a while, so thank you. Fiskars axes are very popular over here in the UK, so as of Feb 2021, they hold their value and they're often out of stock - meaning that at the moment (if you can find them in stock from reputable sellers), the X7 is around £35-£40, and the N7 is around £55-70. The big reason for me to consider the N7 over the X7, was whether the steel was of better quality enough to be worth the extra £20-£40 rise in cost. I've never minded the X7 aesthetic (the orange is easily visible when out in the forest), so if the steel isn't any better, I'll go for the X7. Thanks again.

Has anyone who's tried both noticed if the hybrid handle transfers more or less shock and vibration to your elbow compared to the X7? That's why I preferred wooden handles on my tinner's hammers and why I won't use an Estwing--don't like the vibration transfer and bounce-back. Wood mutes the shock, typically.

Since the N10 and N12 are just a few bucks more than the N7, I found them to be a better value. And since I own an all black X7 as well as a classic orange/black X7 - which is redundant enough lol - those are the two I've purchased. I chose the N10 initially, but liked it so much I ordered an N12 for some light splitting. Now the N12 is now my go-to hatchet / camp axe (for light property maintenance and fireside). Keeping in mind a real Husqvarna forest axe, or Fiskars splitting maul, or comparable beast, will be needed for the serious tasks.

Wood is a living organic material. As such, it is susceptible to swelling, shrinkage, degradation, splitting, etc. That's why some folks go with the synthetic handled tools. I don't see the point of a hybrid axe handle design. If you like wooden handles, go wood all the way. Anyone who uses a hatchet or axe should have gained certain skills, one of which is how to use it without overstrikes that would damage the handle, so it stands to reason that it comes down to "old school wood or new age synthetic!!!

Been splitting wood by hand for my wood stove for the past three years using the Super Splitting Axe and boy howdy does it rip through oak. The hatchet and other axe are amazing for felling trees and limbing. With that said, there’s something about wooden-handled axes. I have been eyeing Gränsfors Bruk axes for some time but can’t afford yet. This might fill that gap perfectly.

$90 for a wood handle when I can get the same axe head for $30 with the composite. If they made a version with better steel that would justify the extra cost. Like GT stated you can get better quality steel with other brands with a wood handle. That is a tough sell at $90. Really feel Fiskars put out a wood handle version due to all the criticism from the hard care woodsmen. If you really like this version of the axe get one soon. If the sales numbers don't justify the manufacture of the wooden handle Fiskars will discontinue making it. The X7 is my go to camp axe. The cover + handle does an excellent job of protecting the blade edge when stored in our camp tote. I have leather covers for my other axes and they deteriorate very quickly. Looking to get custom kydex covers for all my axes.

I think the N-series is just a trick. I've seen two broken X-series axes and the owners admitted they had used it to hit wedges, so they kinda knew they could break the tools. So they just stand a bit too much of beating and the company needed new models just to keep sales. The hickory needs another joint on the handle, compared to the X-series that has only the head and the handle. Hickory doesn't stand that much stress as the composite handle has the reputation of surviving a tractor. Hickory is a good handle material but in this case it weakens the axe as a whole. If I wanted a wooden handle, I would stick with a normal axe head and take the benefit of changeable handles.

I mean, just like a folding knife with the world's strongest lock mechanism will *never* be as strong as a fixed blade knife of the same size, or bigger, or smaller; the N7 will _never_ be as strong as it's single handle constructed X7. I mean, that's just a given. So what's the point of it? If you want a strong, hickory handled, traditional hatchet that can do work. Buy one! It's handle construction will also clearly be stronger than that of the N7. Plus, if you accidentally break the handle off of your traditional hatchet; you can replace it. Can't do that with the N7. Granted, can't do that with the X7. But the X7's handle is practically indestructible. So clearly, what the N7 offers is the worst of both worlds. A breakable handle, but one that you can't replace. It feels as though this thing was made for Weekend Bushcraft Warriors who want to feel like traditional woodsmen, but don't want to bother doing any research or putting in real effort to see which traditional hatchet offerings are going to do the best job out in the woods. (At least without costing over $150.oo, or requiring some work be put in to get the head and handle to a proper state for outdoor use. Grinding, filing, sharpening the edge, putting a proper coating or 3 or 4 on the handle while waiting for that to dry.) Also, how is the N7 an upgrade? Upgrade in price, definitely at 3x as much as the X7. You get a weaker handle, and a blade cover that isn't as good. Seriously, where's the upgrade?

@RhysTucker2603 3 жыл бұрын
Nah, I'd say if you're gonnna upgrade, you can just go for a husqvarna/ Gransfors Bruks/ Hults Bruk. Nothing wrong with an original X7 other than looks but if that's such a big deal, definately go for a swedish made axe.

Love the look have had an X7 for years, only thing I haven't liked is the all plastic nature of this little beast. If price was closer to X7 I would be looking at this as a replacement.

If you order from lamnia its a little bit cheaper. Not sure by the time you add in shipping it is. But if you can reach the free shipping mark it would be worth it. Thats how I got my N12.

I'm a little confused why people want a "old school look" over a over performing composite handle You take it for hiking, the amount of weight matters.

personally, i prefer the composite handles, they are lighter, i dont mind wood handles due to the convivence of easy handle replacement, but not sure i would like the hybrid , but havent used it so couldnt badmouth it

I know most throwing axe 🪓 companies use Estwing hatchets because they are cheap, tough, and full tang.

Looks good but that's it. one piece construction will always be best imho and a lot cheaper even. will rust quicker in leather also. Original is way better value and overall just my 2 cents.

The benefit of a wood handle is its replaceable, with this it’s not. No benefit for an added cost

Every joint, when two parts or materials are put together, is a weakening point. So at this moment I would prefer the polymer version. I realy would like to see an XRay of the handle and how they fixed it together. Looks like they mounted the wooden handle onto the metal piece, and thisý onto the polymer shaft. This equals two joints alone. An axe head with a good hardwood handle, proper hanged, seems to be more trustworthy. There are real old axes and hatchets that still have their first handle. If the head is so great, why not giving it the right eye, so you have the possibility to give it a hardwood handle? Can you hear me, #Fiskar?

That is the question. How will it hold up ? And, if it's equal in durability, is it worth the far higher price ? 3X the price is a disqualifier. Do you really factor aesthetics in your judgement of a tool ? Really ? How would it hold up to long term accidental submersion in water ? Yeah, it would rust, But that can be dealt with. But the wood ? Finally, since wood and polymer could possibly be broken under severe stress, how can the handle be replaced, as with a traditional axe ? A good overall review.

Not a hatchet guy, but holy crap, you sold me on that X7! Serious question though... Why do you think your edge is better than the edge of a company who's been doing this for centuries? Do you think it's just because it would be too expensive to manufacture axes with the convex edge?

It's easy to convex the Fiskars edge. Easy peasy. Use sandpaper on a sanding block with a rubber layer underneath it. Works real nice. Any simple belt sander works also. Proxxon BS/E, Makita 9032 , Powerfile etc.

Hmmm...I’ve carried an X5 for years, and it’s as bullet-proof as the X27 I use at home. Sure, the best Swedish axes and hatchets are better, but to me, when a small Fiskars X does as well as it does at $28 or so, I can’t justify spending $200. As for the price of this new Fiskars, it’s just not worth it to me.

Fiskars roll their edges, way to easy. Might have to look at convexing. I use the X7 for carving, I wonder if the scandi carves better though? Have to CONSTANTLY sharpen it, though.
@greekveteran2715
@greekveteran2715 2 жыл бұрын
Properly reprofiled and after a couple more sarpening sessions, not only it will never rol it's edge again but also it will hold 2-times more it's edge sharpness. That's the only downside with Fiskars, you have to know, how to reprofile them. Actually, same goes for most if not all factory knives and axes. We have to remove that burnt steel, for the tool to perform as it should.

Love Fiskars products and own a couple. I'm a little doubtful of that polymer-to-hickory bond. Temperatures inside my work truck's toolbox get to over 150° all summer, here in the desert. That hickory will be dried and shrunk in only a year or two - I predict it won't last more than 2 years of regular use, in the desert. Otherwise, all other Fiskars tools I've bought are superior to most btw - It's pronounced Fiss- cars not Fiss curs.
