My job is to split wood so i love synthetics precisely because they mean nothing to me. Split directly on the ground. Hit rocks, file a new edge on every few weeks which is easier with soft steel. I have a husky, fiskar, and a free tractor supply maul. The tractor supply maul splits faster and easier than the others mauls and I got for free from people who where moving to a warmer state. The fiskars and husky just bounce off woods. The tractor supply is like an estwing splitting wedge. It is narrow at tip to cut into the wood but then has large offset wing wedges , making it wider than the husky and fiskars to wedge open the wood more. And the tractor supply is cheaper at $30, vs $40 husky, $80 fiskars. The $25 Walmart hyper tough maul look exactly like the tractor supply , probably do the same as tractor supply.

It's all about strategy I usually chip the edges off of the rounds and work my way to the inside I never have a problem doing it like that. The key is shock absorption like you say. The design of it they maximize the most off of the impact with the elasticity of the swing. But also in turn they sacrifice long lasting durability for the performance. I just broke another one of the pickaxes yesterday as I usually break about four of the pickaxes per year now I'm breaking 12. Splitting malls I usually break four of them a year. But it feels so good using it I never mind going back to buy another one I actually keep them lined up knowing I'm going to break them soon you can feel it getting loose and wobbly you can tell when the time is coming. I don't even care about the warranty. But depending on how much digging and breaking and splitting you're doing it does get irritating tearing them up at a high rate of speed. To where now just last week I was thinking I have to keep different models of pickaxes around me along with the Fiskars so that way they can hold up a little better even though they will feel a little rougher because I am too rough on the Fiskars but I love it!

After using this maul for a couple days I agree for the most part. The fiskars does not have the solid feel or raw power of a true splitting maul. Splits are not as satisfying when smashing through rounds. It bounces off a lot of large hardwood rounds. That being said, I've found myself using it more and more and it has a place somewhere between a true splitting maul and a splitting axe. The length and shock absorption from the handle tire me out significantly less and I can split more wood in a session than I could with my 16lb steel maul. It relies more on gravity than power. Ill split most smaller rounds with the fiskars, and save my 16lb for the tougher stuff. Then my splitting axe for cutting to firewood size. This is the most efficient way to hand split for me and allows me to split all day without getting gassed. The maul is not for raw power but efficient splitting of medium to large rounds.

Thanks for this review. I've wondered about this maul and almost bought one. I've used axes and maul for almost 4 decades now to split mostly large hickory. I disagree with the notion of slabing off the sides of a big round. If you look at the grain, and know where to hit it, you can split most of them in half with just a few swings. I do really like the X27 Ax, but it won't bust up knots. That takes a maul or a Hydraulic splitter. If you draw my name, draw another. My rotator cuff won't allow me to swing a maul any more. If the x27 won't split it. It goes on the splitter ;)

This is terrible for any woodworking tools, not only for axes. I don't want to promote any brands, so just visit a good old blacksmith to get a decent quality forged head (of your wished geometry, you can even copy any of these in the video), then spokeshave a handle for yourself in 2 hours, hit a wedge into the eye, then you're done for a fragment of the money.

This video was absolutely unnecessary. You buy a cheap tool with a plastic handle to talk crap about its cheap steel and plastic handle lol. Fiskars tools are made for average people like myself who care about just getting the job done. Good for you that you buy the expensive stuff to make yourself feel better about yourself but all that can be done without making such an obnoxious video.

Hello I'm in Australia I read In comments you recommend Gransfors large splitting Maul I've looked what's available here and we have the Gransfors splitting Maul 450 and Gransfors large splitting Maul 445 Apparently we have more challenging wood to split down here than your side of the world I'll be new to splitting wood for exercise and work But I don't believe in wasting money on cheap crappy stuff for starters and am going straight for the best Could you recommend which one of the two ? Also I would like to get a tomahawk for kindling By the way thanks for your opinion and sharing knowledge on this video

The 450 is what I have. Also, if you can get Adler there, their super splitter is an exact copy of the helko I have. It's my favorite splitter by far. Thanks for watching! Stay warm this winter!

I use two brands of tools...... Stihl and Fiskars.......... Personally I love Fiskars tools. They are a little pricey but the loppers, hatchets, axes, saws and shears in my opinion do the best job of anything else on the market...... That being said.... I own a lot of Fiskars products but when I went out looking to buy a splitting maul I picked one of these things up off of the rack at Tractor Supply and as soon as I held it I put it back on the rack and never touched one again. There is something about the whole feel of this particular Fiskars tool that I DO NOT LIKE.... It just didn't feel right in my hands...... I agree with this guy 100% on this particular tool.......

I love my higher end axes. But I also have some of these Fiskars tools, included the maul. It’s ugly and plastic, but it works. I view it the same way I see my Glock. It just works and that’s what makes it awesome.

I like the X27 well enough. Haven’t had any real big issues. I will say that the edge now needs tinkering with after maybe 2 1/2, 3 cords. I probably wasn’t going to buy their maul, personally. But, hell, I’ll take yours off your hands 😂. Thanks for the content, buddy, and take care of yourself .

Not a fan of all the synthetic handle or fiberglass handle axes I rather the feel of a nice hickory or ash handle in my hand Hell my maul I had a 6 lb sledge maul I made a birch handle that lasted for about 10 years my father used it and after he passed I started using it The head broke before the handle did lol

@kenfrederick8218 Жыл бұрын
Well first of all the metal is soft because it’s a splitting Maul, softer steel is correct for a good maul to limit chips breaking off when u strike a wedge and flying into your eye. Splitting mauls don’t need to be very sharp, they aren’t chopping axes they are splitting mauls. Secondly the reason the handle can’t be replaced is because these handles rarely ever break like wooden ones. On average you will break 20 wooden handles for everyone of these you somehow manage to break. Thirdly you could split that straight grained wood you are splitting in the video with a hatchet or certainly any axe, no idea why you are swinging a 8lb maul. I’ve been heating with wood and splitting firewood since the 80’s and this is by far the best maul I’ve come across. Your entitled to your opinion of course and more power to you for creating this video. I don’t mean to be rude, just trying to correct some errors as I see them for those looking to purchase a maul.

Im mostly splitting eucalyptus and oak. Would you be able to point me toward a better splitting maul? I just bought this fiskars maul but im more than willing to return it if you can show me a better axe
@knotbreaker2 жыл бұрын
Are you comfortable with the fiskars? If you've used it, does it feel good to you? I can show you many mauls that are of significantly higher quality. However, I can't show you an axe that YOU swing better than the one you're comfortable with. I'd be glad to converse with you more about it.
@joshsanchez42042 жыл бұрын
@@knotbreaker Yeah it's been pretty decent for the short amount of time that I've had it. I like swinging it. It's good exercise without a whole lot of shock and it has split most of the logs I've put under it. However, the eucalyptus is quite frustrating. I'm not sure anything can split those rounds. Hydraulic splitters seem to be slow, pricey and ineffective and my old 12 lbs. maul might as we'll be a sledge hammer. The eucalyptus has more of a red color to it. It's super dense and twisted, and the primary reason I'm looking for a new maul/axe.
@knotbreaker2 жыл бұрын
Brother, you may be better suited to be on the search for a good wedge instead. Drive it home with that 12lb and then try something else for further breaking down the splits. If you're dead set on a maul, the Gransfors I used has more of a wedge shape and is designed for dealing with more knotty and twisted rounds.

I wouldn't HATE on you; you don't like it, you don't like it. I just wish you would have said WHY. I have an eight pound Fiskars maul too; and I don't like HAVING to use it. That means I've got an ugly piece of wood to work on. For "normal" maul situations, those times when a splitting axe just won't get it; I use Fiskars SIX pound maul. It swings like an axe!

Haha. No hate here. I like a lot of their products but I didn't like the X27 axe, sold it on ebay. The way it behaves just felt so strange after using a wooden handled one since way back. And totally agree on the handle. The head of a 'real axe' is also detachable for a further reason - which is that if you are wayyy out in the forest and you break the handle, you can cut and fit another one yourself right there. Or even just carry the axe head in your pack if you are going distance on foot. ps. good axe technique :)
