If you go to Guatemala, you'll surely hear about Semuc Champey-a natural wonder a day's drive into the jungle of Guatemala. Our trip to Guatemala would not have been complete without it! So, we grabbed our backpacks and booked a 10+ hour shuttle to brave winding roads to get there.
There are few places to stay once you get to Lanquin (about a 30 minute ride in a 4x4 vehicle to Semuc Champey). Since we only had one full day to explore the pools, we opted to stay within walking distance of Semuc Champey at Greengo's Hostel, which we loved and would definitely recommend.
Here are a few things to remember to bring on your trip:
-CASH because the ATM is back in Lanquin and you do not want to waste time going all the way back to the one ATM.
-WATERPROOF SHOES for getting in the pools or going through the cave tours. Mars didn't wear shoes and did fine, but I really loved having mine and I've heard they're especially useful on the cave tour.
-ECO-FRIENDLY SUNSCREEN-it's hot and sunny, but this is an incredibly gorgeous place, let's all try to keep it that way so we can continue enjoying it in the future.
-SMALL PADLOCK for the lockers close to the pools. We didn't have one, so we weren't able to store our things anywhere. Thankfully we didn't experience any kind of theft during our trip to Guatemala, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Lockers are there to use if you have a lock.
-WATERPROOF CAMERA-We had our GoPro, which made for some really fun shots. We also brought our nice Sony camera, but had to keep it a safe distance from the water. Our drone at this point of the trip was down-SO UNFORTUNATE. I'd highly recommend bringing your drone obviously. But, if you don't have one, the Mirador hike gives you an outstanding view from above.
SNACKS There are little food options out past Lanquin. Our hostel had a few great options, as I've heard others do as well, but the food can take a while so plan ahead.
-REFILLABLE WATER BOTTLE-I saw so much trash while in Guatemala and it made me super sad. I have a Lifestraw water bottle and used it everywhere I went on this trip. I didn't have to feel nervous about drinking water, and I didn't add to the amount of plastic waste in the too small of landfills, especially out in poorer areas where they don't deserve to be trashed on by tourists.
That's all I can think of for now! It's really such a GORGEOUS place. I literally got all teared up at the lookout as it was one of the prettiest views I've ever seen!
