We've made it to our last destination on our 17-day adventure through Guatemala! This week, we'll explore the small colonial, island city of Flores. It's the perfect launching pad to explore Tikal National Park or a handful of other day trips in the Peten region.
We stayed at Los Amigos Hostel-a lovely stay WITH AC in our room! They had a great menu, though the food did take a super long time.
We 100 percent recommend doing the sunrise tour to Tikal. Yes, you will have to wake up early (like 3am), BUT the weather is cooler than it is later in the day, you hear the howling monkeys and parrots before they quiet down later in the afternoon as the park gets busier. Also, there were very few people there. It was surprising as I thought most people would opt to do the sunrise tour, but I was wrong. Most of the crowds showed up around 10-12.
The Tikal grounds are very expansive. Grab a map on your way in!
DON'T FORGET TO BRING
Water (they do sell this in the park)
Comfortable shoes
BUG SPRAY
Snacks or a lunch
To get there from Lanquin:
We took a shuttle from Lanquin to Flores - 200Q/person or about $26 USD/person. The drive was long-about 10 hours and it was hot. The driver put the AC on occasionally and switched between the AC and having the windows rolled down. Bring some Dramamine or something if you get motion sickness. Overall, it wasn't awful, but I also sat in the very front seat.
Flores is a tiny city. It probably only takes about 20 minutes to explore from one side to the other. It's worth a stop, but don't plan to spend more than a day or so here.
If you enjoyed this video, check out the rest of our Guatemala series where we explore Antigua, Hobbitenango, Acatenango, Lake Atitlan, and Semuc Champey.
We can't say enough great things about this beautiful country! I hope these videos have inspired you to take a trip here and gather memories of your own!

We are Mars and Ash Fite, and we've been traveling full time for six years. We began our journey with a 48-state road trip through the USA in our Honda Civic with our then two-year-old daughter. Yes, we have two incredible kids ages 7 and 2! They travel with us as well, but Guatemala was a wonderful chance for the two of us to do some adventuring as a couple, and we really enjoyed it! However, with that said, we definitely plan on bringing the kids back to Central America.
We've been living in a van in the states for five years now-if you're interested in vanlife, check out our videos showing what life is like in a van with two kids and a dog!
We appreciate you checking us out! Leave us a comment introducing yourself! We always love meeting and connecting with new people.
