Staying fit after 40 is easier than you think - I'll share my top 10 game-changing tips with you!
1. A strong, a well-defined sense of purpose: Having a deep-seated anchor, such as family, job, business, or friends, can help you stay motivated. We call this a "goal with gravity" to reset your focus and drive.
2. Search for a successful person who achieved what you want to achieve: Finding a role model can be incredibly inspiring. In my journey, Steve Cotter inspired me, helping me carve out my space in the kettlebell sphere in just a few short years.
3. Visualize your goal: Visualization can be a powerful tool. Take Monica's experience, for example - by clearly seeing her goals, she was able to achieve them more effectively.
4. Count failures as experience, not error: Muscle soreness, aches, and pains are part of the process. You can overcome them and even use tools to lessen these effects from the beginning. View setbacks as valuable learning experiences rather than mistakes.
5. Plan your training strategy: Kettlebells are fantastic for those over 40. Simple workouts, like Deadlift, Press, and Squat, are highly effective. The KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) is key - simple stuff wins. Check out the many workouts available on KZbin or Kettlebell Plus for guidance.
6. Organize a schedule: You don’t have to train every day. Think long term - training once or twice a week consistently is more sustainable. Developing a realistic and manageable schedule is crucial for long-term success.
7. Acquire the essential knowledge to achieve your level of fitness: Understanding how the kettlebell works is essential. It's different from other training modalities, focusing on strength endurance. This knowledge will be your foundation for effective training.
8. Be patient - Don’t be intimidated by time: When starting with kettlebells, expect a learning curve. This is normal and shouldn’t deter you. Avoid focusing solely on results; instead, develop good habits. Persistence is key. For instance, mastering exercises like the Snatch or the Jerk took me years, but consistency was my ally.
9. Develop enthusiasm: None of these tips will help if you don’t find enjoyment in what you’re doing. Gerard's story is a great example - finding what you love makes it easier to sustain your fitness journey. Enjoyment leads to a sustainable practice.
10. Think long-term: The journey to fitness over 40 isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. Focus on making incremental progress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle for the long haul.

I dropped my gym membership, bought a couple of kettlebells and water rower when the pandemic hit. I found your KZbin channel and have been using you as my training coach. In addition to kettlebells and rowing, I've incorporated a moderate yoga practice to soothe my nervous system. I do other activities as well for a change of pace. Full disclosure, I'm 71, 5"9" and 160 lbs. And I feel awesome. Thank you for making this information available to an old, retired man like myself.

Here are some PRACTICAL tips to be strong AND healthy after 40 from a dude who still fights amateur competition Muay Thai at 42: 1) Prioritise flexibility and balance at the same level you do building and maintaining strength. 2) Increase your rest days. Your body's ability to heal itself diminishes with age. This doesn't mean don't go as hard during a session, it means fewer sessions. 3) Invest in dedicated, regular recovery practices (e.g. professional massage) 4) Reduce your cardio to equal or lower than strength, flexibility and balance. 5) Get sufficient rest before training and don't train after big nights out. You'll get sick more frequently than you did in your 30s. 4) Review your nutrition plan with a professional: your protein and carb needs change with your physical demands. If you're still supplementing like a marathon runner but trying to put on lean muscle you're going to fail.

#10 - Enthusiasm This is why I use kettlebells as my resistance training tool of choice. Even though I can technically build more strength and muscle with dumbbells and barbells, I have no enthusiasm for those workouts. I get “strong enough” with kettlebells, and that’s good enough for me personally

If 1 or 2 a week is maintained, I can't imagine most people that are disciplined like that won't want more before the year is done. They will most likely add workouts. this is a really smart Idea for beginning with kettlebells. Actually it's a smart approach for anyone trying to do anything that is new.

Yup, my sister was always abandoning gym because internet plan said go 3-4 times a week, go this hard routine for her untrained body for good results, she works 10h/day(45min back and forth home/work), has a little kid on top, she barely had any time to even make dinner properly so it spiralled out of control fast. She saw me doing KB workouts and how i jokingly said "im too lazy to go to gym, yet im working out" (nearest gym is 25min away), my conditioning was great, i praised them so much to her how i feel so good. So on a fly said she could give it a try, dont need to do it much, 1-2 times a week, turn on some music and just roll with it. Bough herself 10kg (was a bit heavy on the start) but did it few times, told my trick because she knows im quite lazy person "just dont think about it, go and start it, dont question - dont hesitate" which always worked. That was almost 2 years ago. Now she does 4/week KB workouts around 30min at home, some yoga and sometimes running, she couldn't be happier from what she's telling me. You just need to gradually add stuff, not go on a routine that's designed for someone who is already somewhat trained. I remember getting back up in shape was just doing knees-on-ground pushups because normal ones were too hard for my heavy ass and after 4-5 it was a real struggle, now i can do 10-pause-10 in proper strict form for finisher workout exercise, literally couldn't be happier for my KB purchase, changed my life because its so easy and convenient.

I just watned to reach out and say one thing. I am way overweight and started working out 2 weeks ago. I am doing a home made tabata routine 30secs hard 30 secs rest x 6 exercises and repeat 4 times. I am all sweat when its over and I have dropped ten pounds already lol. I home cook and only eat very healthy now also. But I wanted to tell you I included a kettlebell swing two handed and watched a bunch of your videos for technique. That exercise TARES YOU UP. Its harder then box squats. When I get strong enough I will start doing your full 30 minute routines but for now, you were right. That is full body stuff. Very excited for more.

In my mid 40s and since I got back into training just over 3 months ago (for functional strength and functional fitness), and after over 5 years off, my personal motto is: Train hard. Train right. Train smart. Eat right. Rest right. Get results. Keep on rockin'! 🤘

Thank you for your great work, I really love your channel :-) One question: I (male, 44 years old) have been training with a 16kg kettlebell for a few months now. I can do most of the standard exercises without any problems. But what I can't do with this weight is the windmill. I am very stiff in my hips and also feel very unstable when doing the windmill. Do you have any idea what could be the reason for this and how I can improve in this exercise? Simply start with a lighter weight and increase?

Hey Gregory, I'm curious as to why you favour the hand-2-hand swing over the 2h or 1h? I'm assuming you favour the Russian pendulum technique over the Hardstyle. Thanks for your time!

Hi from Seattle, WA! Love your channel and have totally embraced your philosophy. I'm a 63 y.o. physician that was trying to do too much.....run, cycle and go to the gym to weight train. Unfortunately, I neglected mobility and flexibility. I have now migrated totally to your kettlebell workouts 2x per week and alternate a 2-3 running sessions with cycling sessions. This is much more realistic with my busy schedule not to mention my mobility and flexibility has improved. Any, I want to say "thank you" for your passion and expertise. You truly inspire!!!
