I was supposed to have lower back surgery for my chronic back pain, but I decided to fire my doctor and heal on my own. Today, I react to Goobie & Doobie's recent video on being an MIT-trained Neurosurgeon and his decision to quit his job for good.

Spinal surgeries account for around 20 billion dollars in the medical industry every year.
Doctors, PTs, and most health professionals are under a lot of pressure to "be productive" and get creative about how to raise the cost per visit and the number of patients seen in a given day.
This opportunity turns you, the back pain sufferer, into a money-making machine.
It's not because of bad doctors, but because of the way the medical model is set up.
Today, I want to share my reaction to a recent video of an MIT-trained Neurosurgeon who decided to quit his job altogether after 20 years as a surgeon.
He said I am stopping ALL Spinal Surgeries completely!
There have been a lot of responses from medical professionals about his decision and viral video, but none from the perspective of an X-CHRONIC back pain sufferer who decided to FIRE his doctor and learn how to heal his back on his own.
Today, I'll share the reality of going against what SURGEONS are telling you and what you can do for yourself to stay off the operating table and live chronic back pain-free.

I can't imagine how difficult those earlier years must've been for you while suffering from chronic back pain. Several years ago, I had a sudden back muscle spasm from picking up my dog and I couldn't sit, stand, or lay down in any position without it throbbing. Trying to fall asleep sucked. It's all you can think about, this nagging, unignoreable pain. And that only lasted for 4 days before it went away, just as suddenly as it came on. I can't imagine life for chronic pain sufferers of any kind... brutal. How amazing that it's something you've been able to overcome 🙌 wishing both you & Dr. Goobie a more peaceful present and future 🌱

Preach, brother! Your program made me realize so many things about my pain. I am more autonomous and independent now, without relying on external help. I have the tools now. The most challenging part now is having the discipline, and sometime will power, but it’s on me now. Thank you for doing what you do. God bless.

When I was in the military my career had just begun and i got diagnosed with a herniated disc, i couldnt hold back the tears at the prospect of getting kicked out of the military when I wanted to serve for longer because i truly enjoyed it and not being able to get a job anywhere because I was broken and useless (in my words) in any physical sense. I used to be a very positive person but after that and chronic pain it made me very depressed, ive been dealing with this for 4 years now and i just got a job as a janitor after getting out of the military in the beginning of this year so i hope this is the start of an upward trend towards a fulfilling life. edit: im really thankful that i have been reluctant to get surgery for it because i cant imagine making this pain worse or losing range of motion

sad thing is there are people that NEED the surgery. you cant eat Kale to fix stenosis if you have stenosis so severe that if not fixed surgically, your vertebrae will literally slice the nerve bundle. laminectomy just gave my mom her life back at 70 years old.

A huge part of the problem is the healthcare system in this country. The system gets people addicted to pain meds and encourages people to get disastrous surgeries that only put them into enormous amounts of debt rather than trying to fix the underlying problem.

There are many causes of back pain. Some respond to PT, some don't. Some respond to surgery. Some should not be treated with surgery. No one can make a blanket statement that "their" way is better than another for ALL types of back pain. Some significant back pain IS relieved by surgery. All health care providers need to know their abilities and know their treatments' limitations. There are some very good surgeons who keep working towards new and better procedures and they know who to recommend them to. As well, if you aren't willing to be a part of your own treatment, whatever it is;, and eschew rehab, exercise, healthy living .... unsurprisingly you won't do so well.

Sometimes I think we just have to accept some things and do the best we can do. I have severe spine problems from military injuries. The doctors want to fuse my spine specifically me neck. I am really just not convinced it will even make me feel better honestly. I have started going to the gym and doing PT each morning and that has helped a lot. I have just begun to accept that now, at age 42, I wlll have pain. And I just have to do the best I can. And also pray for myself and others more and do meditation. Thanks for your work and you words brother.

He's right about A LOT, but also I disagree with some of it. Some of us get back pain and other diseases, and we have no way of controlling that. Genetics, social arena, nutrition, and more plays a huge role in what diseases you pick up too. So him saying "Just go exercise, live a healthy active lifestyle, and you'll be good and healthy for life" isn't really true. Only to an extent.

Of course. Pain has many components, layers and complexities that you have to navigate. Exercise is not the solution by itself but it’s far better than surgery (unless you fall into the small % of those who actually need it).

@@Fitness4BackPain Surgery should never be the first choice. I can't speak to other surgeons but we have a protocol of encouraging physical activity with graduated exercise, healthy lifestyle changes, physical therapy, and non surgical therapy. And even then many patients who complete those things are sadly still not good surgical candidates.

There is a difference if you get a disc that goes central in to your spinal cord you have no choice they insist on spinal sugery. If a disc bulging to the side you can heal naturally. Unfortunately I’ve had caudia equina syndrome twice now. Sometimes you have no choice you have to have surgery to stop you ending up like me. Numb from hips down. So please be clear there sometimes medical emergencies. I don't want anyone ending up like me through not getting help.

Unfortunately my spinal sugery was a medical emergency. I developed caudia equina syndrome over 18 months. Nobody knew what was wrong with me. I was operated on and unfortunately nothing changed my nerves were dead through been crushed. I now have thoracic disc bulging central and trying my best to not get sugery. I’ve already lost my bladder and bowel. They say i could be numb from waist down. I am already numb from hips down away. I don’t see the benefits of sugery for me. I'll try to keep myself away from the doctors.
