Fitting a Minn Kota Trolling Motor - part 1 of 4

By now everyone who is even remotely interested in fishing would have heard of electric trolling motors. Most of you would also know that the better models (read more expensive) come with a feature called spot lock. This feature employs a GPS to keep your boat in the same position, regardless of wind or current. In effect, it acts as an electronic anchor but it is better than a real anchor in many ways.
First and foremost it keeps the nose of your boat (all spot lock capable motors are bow-mounted) in the same position so the most you will move off your spot is the length of your boat.
Second, for me at least, is I don't have to pull up several hundred metres of anchor rope when I am fishing offshore. With that much anchor rope out it doesn't take much of a change in the wind or current to move you off your spot, this doesn't happen with a Minn Kota.
Third, the jog function allows me to move 5 feet (1.5 metres) at a time, forward, backward or sideways to fine tune my position.
And of course, there is also the slow trolling, contour following (with sonar), tracking and spot memory. It certainly makes my fishing easier and therefore more enjoyable, in fact, I don't know how I ever managed without one.
If you are thinking about getting one, I highly recommend it.
