Specialized made a bike called the Pfix and it used a very similar crank and sprocket setup. I ended up swapping them for a set of odyssey thunderbolts which are a unique 2 piece crank design. To answer your question, yes I’ve ridden BMX cranks on a fixed gear bike and those chromo 48 spline inserts on the sprockets are prone to play over time which is why I switched to bolt drive!

I'm glad you made this comment because I've been considering trying out a 48 spline drive sprocket on one of my fixed gears and have questioned the performance improvements over cheaper 8spine cranks with more available single bolt bmx sprockets.

I ran profiles on my track bike back in 2015/16 and the first thing you’ll notice is the rigidity. They’re so damn stiff which being a bigger dude felt amazing. I had the imperial chain ring on them which looked dope to. Nice work on the set up bro, they look amazing on your bike. Definitely try find the 165’s if you can. The toe overlap will be that little bit less but you’ll notice it. Big ups mate.

You will toast those BB bearings if you leave them like that. You need about a 0.1-0.2mm preload, but you have a 0.8mm preload with that BB width and crush tube combo. Either slim down the inner crush tube or space out of the BB cups by 0.7mm etc. I've lost so many hours messing around with BB spacers. Long live Shimano hollowtechII and OG BMX cranks
@schwinnguy
@schwinnguy 11 күн бұрын
That's my problem with this bb standard, they are so fiddly to set up. The surface area of the spline engagement on the aluminum chainring seems a bit small too.

Dude, that looks so rad! I remember sporting Profile cranks on my PK Ripper back in the day; and I mean back in the day(circa 83)! Back then their fit and finish was second to none. Profile has been around for a long, long time, considering. It’s nice to see that quality still shines through!

Hi man, been a fan of your work, I've run a BMX Profile setup on my All City Def Wish for quite some time just to commute without the stress of FGFS and it definitely develops a play in the long run. Ideally, it should run on a track 144 crank setup but the frame wouldn't allow it. I'm running a 33-9 T gear ratio at the time. I believe the main leverage this Reyes frame had compared to an old-school FGFS frame like my Def Wish is its capability to run that track 144 with a big chainring setup for reliability. Sick build as always though.

had profiles in 155mm on my trasher build....same sprocket you have here...sweet setup...the only thing that bothered me is the much wider stance(q factor)....never had an accident because of it tho, fhats was probably thanks to the very short cranks I had

@waveywheelies 8 күн бұрын
Oh man that’s good to hear! Would of loved to find some shorter ones, going to keep my eye out for some around that 160 mark. Yeah the q factor is definitely something to get used too, luckily this mash frame had quite a high bb

I usually install those profile sprockets with the little profile logo hidden behind the crank arm, kind of like how on mountain bikes they have that little extra bit on the sprocket behind the crank arm to stop the chain getting caught there if it was ever to come off. (No idea if that's actually why profile do it like that tho)

In my experience, the larger the chainring in the spline system with an insert, the faster the play occurs. I once had a 36t chainring and after 6 months, the play increased, which meant that after another 2-3 months the chainring was a piece of junk. I recommend full cromo spline - it reduces the problem of play and pointless frustration :D By the way, I wonder how you fit a 47c tire in this frame? The manufacturer states that a 43c will fit max. It's probably a matter of the inner rim width. I have such a frame and I have to check it :)
@waveywheelies
@waveywheelies 8 күн бұрын
Thanks for the info, that’s what I was worried about, I’ll see how I go with this set up. Would love to try out a full cromo one that’s bigger than 40t. The 47 just fits on the rear, it is quite tight. From experience you can always go a bit bigger than manufacturers state, depending on tyre and tread size. Could also squeeze bigger on the front

Any tips on how install a cog and lock ring?
@waveywheelies
@waveywheelies 8 күн бұрын
Use grease, make sure your lockring threads match the hub threads (there’s two different common standards that a lot of people get caught out on) and make sure the cog is nice and tight before you tighten down the lockring (if your cog isn’t fully tight, it can tighten down more when you ride it which will cause the lockring to loosen and/or strip) Hope that helps a bit, dm me on Instagram if you need more help

Besides the looks, I’m wondering a little bit what the point is of installing BMX cranks? They look to be of an inferior design mechanically speaking. Yes, there are more bearings, but these 48 splines have got to develop play, the chainring is carrying a bigger load because it's not supported by a spider (all the force goes to the small splines). It's also more tedious to install, and it gives a wider Q factor, giving a higher risk of pedal strikes and moves the tread force away from the center, meaning you have to tilt the bike more when out of the saddle and pedal harder than you would have to with track or road cranks. I get that the fixed gear community is often not about what makes sense, but more about rebellion, also looks wise. But still.
@waveywheelies
@waveywheelies 8 күн бұрын
Just depends on what style of riding you like doing, there’s always different pros and cons for different parts. because this build was focused closer to fgfs I decided to test them out. Fgfs riders use bmx cranks and have done for a long time. The Q factor is definitely something to think about, would have been ideal to get these cranks around that 160 mark, but unfortunately couldn’t find any. The one thing I love the most about bikes is the customisation, ability to use different parts and to make stuff work how you want, and then ride them of course🥹

That's not how you measure & space cranks out. Obviously you measure from the pedal flats-to the-centreline of the seat tube. Assuming your chain stays are symmetrical is asinine.
