The foam inserts, underneath the sub-floor, can be reshaped for more appeal down the road but this is just an option for practical use. They are velcroed on so they can be instantly removed and the floorboard sits on it without an issue, however it will be on a slight angle ☺️

What actually might be cool (for Modern Tire) is to make a high density custom molded foam insert for the tire.

It works for you and it's a clever solution to bring a spare tire with minimal changes. It can also go back to stock very easy, minus some work to replace the cut-out foam. I would consider doing the same for my Model Y except I haven't needed a spare time in over 40 years (just slow leaks). Tires are so much better than they used to be, but road hazards can still leave you stranded so I like the peace of mind of having a spare when driving in rural areas, like where you would camp.
@pinnedadventures11 ай бұрын
Thank you!! And I 100% agree, I wanted to explore minimally invasive solutions. We do many cross country road trips, and we also camp in mountains/ forests where cell service isn't great, so it is just a peace of mind for me ☺️ .. It also reduces the need for leveling blocks!

@@bobby350z I've only had one blown tire where I needed a spare -- in 1991. I've also had a few leaks over the years since. Currently, we have two Teslas -- 2018 M3 and 2021 MY, with fam of four drivers. MY has had a leak two different times. The last time was recent and virtually no tread (44k miles on orig 40k tires) -- so replaced tires instead of dealing with leak.
@ibsn875 ай бұрын
@@bobby350zwe have 5 in the family. And no blown tires since 2018. I’ve collected 2 screws and had them repaired. No big deal and no fault of the car. Is this the first car you have owned with lower profile tyres? I say this with consideration that tire pressure maintenance is MUCH more important with lower profile tyres (risk pinching against the rim)… The fact it’s a generally heavier vehicle, and lower profile, so tire temperature at speed is even more critical if they are left low for extended periods. Traditional tyres with more sidewall, will be more forgiving of longer intervals between air top ups if you hit a pot hole. I can’t see how else you’re having such big issues with these tires? Of your 4 failures. Under exactly what circumstances did they fail and how often are you topping up the air?

My SLK Mercedes had a spare that inflated with an included air pump. It was a much smaller diameter when not inflated. I wonder if something like that might be possible to fit into the sub-trunk without hacking up the car. Also, maybe someone could design a "Continental kit" to carry a full size spare, that would plug into the optional trailer hitch.

@anonypersona318911 ай бұрын
Just be careful with that. In a big crash the spare isn't secured as it would be in a stock optioned car designed for a spare. They are always secured by locking nuts. A tire flying around in a crash could cause severe injury or even death. I would suggest you find a way to properly secure it (heavy impact or even rollover down embankment).

This great, thanks for sharing! I wish Tesla or Modern Spare offered a deflated spare with smaller 18" rim/wheel -- that expands to the full 28in diameter wheel. It'd then be small enough to fit in either the frunk -- or like the video in the smaller secondary trunk space / only even more compact. The Modern Spare is great, but still has a lot of wasted space due to the inflated tire. I'd rather *sometimes carry a spare* -- and always carry a small air pump (that could ALSO be used for other things / bikes / mattresses / tire inflation / emergency sealant / etc).
