I've had this kit for a while now, and love it! I kept it in my trunk all winter because of the horrible potholes here in Chicago, and I plan on taking it on every road trip. I hope I never have to use it, but I'm sure glad that I have it! For those reading this, I recommend the full kit with a carrying case. Everything stows away neatly inside, and it's so convenient to remove the kit from the trunk in one piece to store it for later use. The entire kit only weighs something like 42 lbs, so it won't hurt range. I know the upfront investment is a bit steep for some of you, but trust me when I say it is well worth the cost. There is nothing "cheap" about this product. Great review, Mike!

Just ordered. Had my first flat (a bolt like you had in the tire). I called Tesla roadside. I’m 17 miles outside their service area. They wouldn’t bring a spare - would only send a tow to take the car to a tire store. Like you’re bolt experience, I could put air in the tire and get to the tire store. But it made me nervous about using the car on a road trip or to drive to the airport for a flight. I would not have time to deal with that. This will get added to the car anytime I’m going someplace not in my local town. Mine is a Model Y and that version of the kit will ship in early July. Thanks for the video.

great video ordered one. had a flat in Oklahoma City. it took tesla roadside assistance over three hours to send a tow. It was going to take 3 days for the tire shop to get the tires I wanted so I had to take the ones they could get in that day. it still took them all day. this spare tire would have saved me a day of my life that I can't get back.
@mrmeach196711 ай бұрын
Yep. This spare makes a lot more sense to people AFTER they experience Tesla’s roadside assistance. It ain’t a truck that rolls up in 30 min and then fixes the flat. I suspect Tesla’s tires aren’t easily fixed with a patch kit either because they’re foam-lined for sound dampening. That’s why practically every roadside call translates into a tire replacement, not a repair. For me the whole ordeal took two days - and that was in my own town. I have no desire to see how this plays out on a road trip.
@2222ut4 жыл бұрын
Great Video. I was stuck in the middle of nowhere for 5 hours. Outside of 50 miles circle for t. roadside, it cost me about $230 for a third party tow service to bring me a spare tire. 5 Hours!! So, the cost of this tire is great!! Thank you for pointing this product out !!! Tip: Tow service could not get lift under puck like you showed. He had a spare piece of wood in his truck. Place that by the tire, pull forward a few inches, and the wood helps lifts the car the few inches that's needed. I now keep a small piece of wood in the car. Side note: At dealer later, a couple was returning their Tesla. They were stranded for days because of the lack of a spare tire. They were really mad about T. roadside and never wanted to go thru that again. I second that!!
@mrmeach196711 ай бұрын
All great points. I used to think that Tesla had this base adequately covered until I had the pleasure of experiencing their “solution” in my home city. Thanks for revealing how this could go down on a road trip. Tesla is not in the roadside assistance business. They’re also not in the tire repair business.

I like the look of that spare. I think full-size wheels with the same look as that spare wheel would be great. A tip for using a small jack like that. Bring a small piece of plywood to put under the jack so it doesn't sink into the ground or dent your pavement. I did it once and wish I'd used some wood under it. Great video and product!

Another tip I've seen posted elsewhere, is to place a tire-changing ramp behind or in front of the flat tire depending on whether it's the front or rear. Then back up or drive up onto it a little to get the height needed to use a puck with the jack. Jack the car up, then remove the ramp.

Mike, your videos are always informative and well produced. Great job! One suggestion, however: Even with a spare tire, it is strongly recommended to carry a 12V tire inflator and a tire pressure gauge at all times. Like all tires, spare tires are known to lose air over time.

A velcro bottom on the bag like what comes with the Tesla charging cable bag, very effective to keep it from sliding around. That is on my DIY list. 3. Add cargo tie downs like Saabs and Volvos have had for decades. That is on my DIY list. 4. Combine the lug wrench and ratcheting jack handle in a single tool to save weight.

@reasonitout90874 жыл бұрын
Excellent video. You actually did the work and showed what was involved. I will probably buy one of those spare tire kits since I do not have snow tires to throw in the trunk for trips. (By the way, 30 minutes after writing this which forced me to remember a few "horror" flat tire experiences in my life in cars, pickup trucks, on motorcycles and bicycles, I ordered the tire and rim.) Here are a few things I do to continue my trip with the least hassle and wasted time and money. I also have a safety protocol that keeps my family and me as safe as possible when breakdowns occur while travelling. Regularly scan for pressure drops on the TPMS. Anything below the other tires is my trigger. Address the problem before it becomes a problem. I give myself the option to inspect the trouble tire and pump it up to 42 - 45 PSI range. at a safe place. Personal Safety is paramount. Drive the car to a safe spot unless you have a death wish. Read the papers for why. I have driven to a safe place to inspect, pump, replace tire without getting vaporized by an errant truck, bus, car, motorcycle. Even if it means destroying the rim. Slowly riding a totally deflated tire does not necessarily ruin the rim but it might...it depends on how the tire lays and if it has come off the beads. Drive on the shoulder to an exit or to where there are people and light. A toll plaza is best if on the interstate toll road. Inspect: if it is a nail or screw that is within reach without removing wheel then plug* and inflate. You must have a plug kit. Although plugs can work for years and many miles they are considered temporary. In fact many shops will not plug your tire. For a heavy, high speed, high horsepower car, an internal patch is a minimum requirement for me so plug it to get to your destination but have it properly serviced as soon as practical. I put the jack/puck/and small plywood under the car BEFORE it goes flat or pump it back up with my portable 12 volt pump if it is flat. Carry a $7 Harbor Freight breaker bar with a 6 point 21 mm impact socket. If you have snow tires then use one as a spare. Make sure to bring the lug nuts that come with the snow tire rim. I have changed tires in the rain at the toll plaza in 11 minutes from start to finish. Drop the tire off at a tire shop when appropriate. The primary directive is to not get killed screwing around or waiting on the side of the road if your car is still driveable. IF you have a road service , then I would still take it to a safe place. The reason NY has a Pull over law is because of the hundreds of people killed trying to help someone. *A plug by itself or a patch by itself is not an acceptable repair because the plug does not permanently seal the inner liner and the patch does not fill the void left by the penetrating object, which allows water to enter the body of the tire and starting corroding the steel belts. Not all tires can be repaired. Specific repair limits should be based on recommendations or repair policy of the tire manufacturer and/or type of tire service. When tires are repaired improperly, the results can be deadly. Be sure to ask your service technician if industry standard procedures are used in the repair process. When a puncture is within the limits established by the industry and properly repaired, you can expect the tire to continue to deliver thousands of miles of safe and reliable performance.

Great video. Addressed all of my concerns. Especially about using the jack with no puck. And showing the car warnings about an unknown tire. That spare with jack and case are now over $500, but still worth it. I lost a day waiting for Tesla service to replace my tire after having a flat in my Y. Their air pump/leak fixer failed miserably-actually smoked when I used it. My car has the 16V low voltage battery and I think their compressor expected 12V.

I am ok with my setup in the 2015 Nissan Leaf. I can only go 60 to 80 miles per charge. My Leaf does not have Chadamo or DC quick charging. Therefor I rarely if ever do long distance road trips longer than 60 miles. I am most likely to get a flat tire driving around town near a tire repair shop. I just call a tow truck and they take my car to a tire repair shop. I just got a new set of tires at Discount Tire. Just like the Tesla Modle 3, the LEAF does come with a tire repair kit, which I have never used. Great video.

Jackson Bangs I will say this, though. For any car that you can take outside your normal, local driving envelope (electric or not), this spare should be mandatory equipment. The cheap donut spares other manufacturers have used in the past are way to flimsy and unsafe if you are out on a long rural stretch between service stops. I would trust my family to this spare.

Yes, this is the solution for a spare I have been looking for. This is the kind of spare that should be in every car. I’ve had nightmares in the past with the cheap donuts they gave me with previous cars, and when I found out that Tesla didn’t include a spare, just a phone number, I’ve worried about it every trip. I remember the video on EE when he hit a pothole on the interstate in Illinois and ruined the tire and the rim, and how he had to wait until service came and it cost him a ton of money. This would have got him back on the road in less than 15 minutes and gave him options. I plan to get one for my car soon. Thanks a bunch.

Had a flat yesterday in a metro area, and Tesla sent a tow truck to tow the car to our home for a next day repair visit. I'm not a Tesla owner, just looking into one. On the lug nuts, you need to verify that the seat on the nuts (bottom where it contacts the wheel) is the same between the spare and the original wheels. Hopefully the spare was designed to use the same type of nuts but maybe not. The other thing you should do is use a torque wrench as soon as you can.

Thanks for your review. I purchased one of those spare wheels for my 2020 m3p. I don’t expect to get a flat anytime soon because that’s what happens when you have a working spare. Any way. I suspect Tesla does not supply a spare as there is nowhere to anchor it safely in the event of accident ; collision, or rollover. This loose spare wheel could cause significant damage in a high speed collision to occupants of the vehicle. To improve safety and alleviate this possibility I have braced the wheel in the boot up against the rear and side of boot by adding light but strong 3\2 softwood bracing also to the main steel support at the top of the boot. I know that this sounds different but I think this method should improve my safety concerns. Thanks again for your review

Question, weight? I will say, it was more expensive then I had anticipated. Great video, you covered and answered the questions well.

I had a Flat Tire last week and the Modern Spare Kit was exactly what was missing here right now I am still thinking if I should place an order because of the high shipping costs to Germany.

I assume this will work on the Y. Will that puck work better since the Y has more ground clearance? Thanks for the informative video!

I got the MS full kit using Frugal’s coupon. Don’t ask me about DHL’s delivery “service” here in Australia because I will start shouting but suffice it to say the adapter ring for the rear wheels and the safety pack were missing in transit. Not surprising since the package had gone backwards and forwards half a dozen times here. Modern Spare were very good and, after DHL had found the missing items and delivered them (problem was that they had mysteriously turned into two very heavy steel bars....) sent me replacements. By FedEx - these arrived in just a few days. Nice wheel, nice case and very good ratchetting jack. I’m thankful though that I decided to try a rear wheel change in daylight and in my garage for practice! The Tesla wheel is HEAVY! The adapter ring keeps the spare away from the brake caliper but takes quite a lot of manual dexterity to fit since the holes are only just big enough to accept the wrench socket. All in all, first time but in ideal conditions, it took nearly an hour to immobilise the car (essential - and the Tesla instructions don’t correspond to the menu in the car!) and change the wheel. Recommended - but do have a practice run before your first flat on a dark and stormy night. (Apologies to Peanuts.)

Buy permashield. It guarentees no flat upto a quarter size hole.

I bought one right after getting my Model 3, have not had to use it yet. I really really wish the Frunk was large enough to fit this thing.

Apparently it's deliberate as it would interfere with the crash structure (prevent it crumpling in the intended way or fire something heavy and hard straight into the bulkhead). The fact there's nothing there is part of what makes them so safe in a frontal impact.

Why is it that with Honda compact spares , it recommends no more than 50mph, but this spare can if need be go 80mph? Also what determines how many miles I can go on a tire? A quick google search indicates going only about 70miles for a compact spare

Most likely a stupid question... In the graphic you display to show the four lift points (7:18 in the video), the key shows a yellow strip on each side, described as "Safe stabilization points for a Model 3 resting on its side"?!? What the....?!? When, pray tell, does a Model 3 (or any car for that matter), "(rest) on its side"? Other than that, great video, TFG!
