I have a few older bikes with the 1 inch steer tube and want to update one to newer drop bars. This was very informative and helping with my thinking on the matter. I think I will do the conversion on one of them. Thanks for the video from Michigan USA.

It works fine with no issues in the last few years. I now use that frame as a gravel bike and have done MTB trails on it… no issues with the stem or headset so far. 🙂

At this point at 3:15 all you had to do was take a mallet/hammer and tap down on the stem bolt to unstick the wedge nut.

Mechanically it would have been better/safer to cut the adapter shorter. (At the same angle as previously). As now you are clamping against a sloping surface and smaller diameter. A good jolt and the wedge can work itself to the upper portions of the steerer tube with the larger diameter. Meaning your handlebars will be loose. Good show either way.

Great suggestions 👍🏻 I re-built this Bike last year as a gravel bike and so far it's been through some pretty rugged terrain. River crossings, rainforest trails, rocks, sand and big potholes and so far the only thing to fail was the rider. 😂 Thanks for your comment 🙂👍🏻

2 things that I’ve learned in my 37 years never trust a guy to work on a bike who wears latex gloves or at least gloves that don’t fit or a guy who takes the face of the stem all the way off to put bars on

I have an old trek with a 22.2 quill and a 25 something handlebar. I want a thicker handlebar. So if you know how to find a 1 inch quill adapter that fits a 31 something handlebar then times it by pie (3.14). 3.14×14 psi÷e=mc sq. Then how many 12 oz beers can one drink if it's Wednesday. @@reginaldscot165 thankyou, I managed to muster up a solution IE 1 1/8” to 1” spacer, then a standard quill stem and a nice set of BMX handlebars with a 9” rise. This allows me to get rid of my folding handlebars on my E-Bike . It was the weak link and the hinge mechanism kept getting sloppy and was dicey to ride like this. I’ve been looking for a solution for over a month and local bicycle shops said they couldn’t help and it couldn’t be done. Frankly I think they just didn’t want to help but after scrubbing the internet I finally came up with a solution I’m happy with. Thank you ....

Does anyone know if you are supposed to put a lot of grease on the adapter when installing it like Reginald did. I did this with the exact same Profile adapter into a titanium frame just like Reginald but I always have it in the back of my mind that I will loose steering and crash on steep downhills and die. Hoping someone in the know will respond.
@reginaldscot1658 жыл бұрын
This frame is steel not titanium, but you will need enough grease to cover the entire surface of the aluminium adapter because if you don't the aluminium will bond to any other metallic surface over time, you will not get it out after that. It is the wedge in the base of the adapter which prevents it from coming loose, this bike has been ridden ever since this video was made and so far no problems. I wiped off any grease that I didn't need after the job but I wouldn't worry about using too much. Hopefully somebody else will also comment. Thanks for your question. All the best and stay safe.

Anthony Bedont If you want to get really technical it was a zirconia flap disk. The best way to tell the difference is to get it spinning a few thousand rpm and then sit on it. 😊
@RoboAnt13317 жыл бұрын
Reginald Scot well in America there is a huge difference between a buffing pad and flap disc. one polishes and one takes metal away so when I here polishing pad I'm thinking of you standing there making the aluminum shiny.
@reginaldscot1657 жыл бұрын
Anthony Bedont I didn't say polishing pad did I? I said buffing right? And if you want to get really technical... and a little pedantic all pads, polishing, buffing and grinding remove metal, just at slightly different amounts. 😉
