You sound English. There has been an uptick of young Brits carrying very large blades. Maybe because they cannot have guns? I live in the middle of the US, and the carry of a fairly large knife is legal and rarely seen. We carry guns mostly! But yeah, the video goes a little far with conjecture. Kind of a silly what if conversation about blade steel. Realize though sir that you were interested enough in the topic to watch the video.

@@dalecarpenter8828 I'm not that's just not true is it, look I'm all for your second amendment rights but don't bulshit about it. There are no mass killings in Britain the last one was a school and firearms were banned afterwards. Now knife crime is a complex issue and comes largely down to funding being stripped away from the police and corrupt politicians trying to make a name for themselves, this can be observed by looking at the statistics. Regarding your second amendment please don't act like guns make a safer society; you aren't going to fight the military with your well regulated military you'd be destroyed in less than 24 hours, Guns do not provide a safer society overall when you have a gun rich society you make firearms more easily accessible to criminals who can have someone buy or steal guns they need. The reasons to keep a gun are simple either you like guns and that's it or a psychological condition i.e. you've been exposed to trauma which has prompted you to use the gun as a safety blanket providing you with a sense of security allowing you to face the world again.

@Matthew M It's not muslims it's chavs in their council estates fighting over their post code acting like they're big gangsters when they only sell weed. You want to blame anyone for knife crime it should be the politicians for there weak stance on this shit. If you get caught with a knife you should do a 10 year stint making stop and search more prevalent see how long it takes before 90% stop. Then set up more outreach programmes to stop the next generation in these areas falling into the same trap. Problem is that politicians are so worried about votes they don't understand that to change statistics like knife crime etc. you have to basically sacrifice 90% of these would be offenders to the system to save the next generation and build a better society.

The reason daggers were so loved for such a long time is because it's a penetrating weapon. It can pierce easily through a weak part of armor, or break a chain and penetrate through chainmail, better then a slashing weapon will, or one with a too wide point. One thing that's also quite relevant is the ease of penetration through the ribs that a well made dagger has, something that made it a favorite of commandos during WW2. The Fairbairn-Sykes dagger is a good example.

One does NOT use a rapier to get close to an opponent, You do everything to avoid letting an opponent get within the guard of your rapier. The dagger is to defend against an opponent who has gotten past the tip of your sword, inside, where you can not use the tip against him, rapiers killing with the tip/thrust. This guy knows nothing about swords or fighting with them. Chop an arm off? Before your back swing is complete, you will have holes in you. He would be well advised to stick to the shopping channel as an authority on jewelry.

Those daggers have their roots in fighting against medieval plate armoured knights. You had to get into gaps of the armour, at the visir, neck, elbows, armpit, basically everywhere where there are joints. A Bowie knife, basically a european butchers knife, was around then as well. But the blade was too wide to get into one of the gaps and be lethal. Now, in days where people wear t-shirts, a cutting edge like the Bowie, would be the right blade. This is why I carry one of the three Cold Steel Bowies I have. And a Cold Steel TiLite. Maybe with an added Vaquero Grande, the serrated ones.

I can't find any tattoo parlors in my area that will do that one. Weird. Speaking of weird, this one kid just messaged me on KZbin. Oddly enough, they're assuming I don't know about the Cross of Saint Peter, despite knowing literally nothing about me. Then again, if they can't understand how to pick up on sarcasm, they're probably not tactful enough to think about those sort of things. Poor guy. I bet he doesn't even realize.

To the guy on the left: You're not understanding that Medieval and Renaissance folks used to wear this thing called ARMOR, which made stabbing through harder, and required finer points for stabbing to actually hit the mark. Even civvies wore multiple layers of wool, a common thing for ages, which can stop a stab, and especially a slash or hack. That's why old time daggers were like that. Ppl didn't walk around w/just T shirts and attitudes, & think they were good to go.

The weight and heft of a big Bowie concentrates all the force you give it, on the tip of the razor-sharp blade. (physics 101) That's the beauty of a fighting Bowie knife. The false edge can be sharpened and used for a back flick. You can bop a head with a Bowie's pommel. I'd go with a Bowie knife.

A great many knives made in Pakistan have good steel. Good steel is extremely cheap there. Unfortunately, what the knives lack is good heat treat and temper. But both 15n20 and Japanese 1095 is dirt cheap in Pakistan. Sadly, they usually mix the two to make acid etched "Damascus", and don't heat treat or temper anything properly.

8 years later but just a heads up: a knife in a backpack is useless. If you’re ever in a situation where you NEED to use it, rather than running away (always number one tactic) you won’t have time to get it. It needs to be ON you not tucked in something.

1: A Scottish Dirk is not, in any way, a "dagger." They are single edged knives (the top swedge isnt considered a real edge on any knife), with a totally different blade shape and grind. 2: Ask anyone actually skilled in "knife fighting" as fitzen calls it (or Sayoc Kali or another martial art as real practitioners call it) whether their favorite fight stopping feature of their blades is how flash and scary they look. That's akin to the myth of racking a 12ga slide to make the bad guys run.

I think this video is sooo pointless, as the Bowie and the dagger are blades designed for completely different purposes. More over it is absurd to say that a Bowie knife has better penetration than a dagger, this only shows that you have not gone through realistic tests.

+Emafex Yep that's pretty much how it goes. The vast majority of people would not go into a knife duel. Most of the times it's a surprise and when you notice , you're already bleeding. The best thing about a bowie knife is that it can serve other purposes and pretty decent too. You're probably not gonna need to use it against another human being... much less in a duel. Besides, if you carry a blade that big, people are gonna look at you funny, and police will often stop you, even in states where it is legal.

@basnissen88 It's Sam from the vid! I'm a HUGE fan of the Kukri. The forward weighted design makes it chop like no other knife in the world (assuming of course that the edge is of equal sharpness). That said, kurkris generally rely on large, powerful movements, and their weight forward design makes them less lively in hand and ill-suited to fencing type movements that daggers and bowies are adept at. It's all preference.

Boker smatchet, cold steel Tai Pan, loveless big bear classic, Randall model 2, and plenty of others reduced or arguably eliminate the stated shortcomings depending on opinion and variables like clothing and just how sharp strong and skilled the user is. And they offer an advantage most bowies don't- they will reliably rip someone's hand apart if they try to grab it.

Not only does it have a razor sharp double edge blade made out of carbon steel but it also has steel knuckles and a skull crusher built into it. It's deadly in 3 different ways. short spears, screwdrivers, kitchen knives, daggers, broken hot sauce bottle. the cold steel zulu spear is short and has long reach. kukris are not as good for stabbing (they still can) but you can cut off a large ass chunk of someone with a stiff flick of the wrist. bear mace is pretty good except it can get in your eyes and lungs as well so careful there. Karambit knives (the cold steel tiger is pretty decent) can disembowel someone very easily, tape one under a table or by the door.

@fuakyewz Think about it though. Pain will stop you. If a blade that was only sharp enough to cut paper and not hair, it would be obvious to say that it would be more painful than a razor edge would, figuratively speaking though. A back cut allows you to carry an edge like that while keeping a razor edge on the other side.

The was a fun vid. The first dagger you are showing *is* used with a rapier but period sources show that almost all of the offence and the vast majority of the defence was handled by the rapier. The dagger is quite useful for parrying thrusts and but not much else when accompanied by a rapier. A dagger is even less useful with a cutting sword as you can't reliably stop cuts with one. I really enjoyed your storytelling. :)

True, I've always thought it's a bit of an irony that knives with Jim Bowie's name on them were sold all over the country during his lifetime and they were even made outside the country as in the case of the Sheffield Bowies and that Bowie himself never saw a cent from this franchise that started with his name.

The original Mountain Man knives (pre Jim Bowie era) looked like giant chef knives. Jim was the one that created the more iconic trailing point and clip point designs with the upswept false edge on the spine of the blade. The more extreme clip point designs were all uniquely Jim Bowie. Nothing in England came close to his larger upswept designs. He also may have been responsible (still debatable if this was his idea) to have a brass/gold guard on the spine of the bowie which was to be used for parrying and blunting an opponent's blade in a knife fight.

Nice video. Personaly I'd give a slight edge to the dagger. Here's why you can make a heavy dagger capable of lopping off limbs similar to a Spartan Ziphos (leaf design). As far as penetration goes a double edged dagger will beat a single edge bowie any day. Not to be to graphic but when you stab at a tendon or blood vessel they have the tendency to slip to one side if it is double edged it will cut either way if it is single edged you got a 50-50 chance. Again nice vid.

Don't agree when your buddy says I can stab with this bowie just as easy as a dagger......sorry just not true. Try and stab the bowie to a persons heart and see if ribs get in the way or lung shot. if you have a point on the bowie like Johns, yes. conceal ability with a dagger, hands down. Back of the neck down through spine shots, dagger all the way. Daggers still are not around after 1000's of years for the heck of it.

Fire12318 I've seen this man fight 3 well trained ninjas immediately after having a 3 way with some Brazilian supermodels. He was also battling the flu while fighting them off too, so he was only at about 40%. 5 aerial somersaults and 3 roundhouse kicks later he was the last man standing!

The world's best fighting knife is a sword or a pocket knife. If I'm going into a knife fight I'm bringing a sword or as close as I can get to it. If I have to carry the damn thing all day then I'm using a pocket knife. The semantics go away in a fight. If it has a blade longer than 3 inches then you can do a lot of damage with it. Nobody is going to parry a cut in a knife fight. If you somehow manage to get into a knife fight you're pretty much guaranteed to get cut.

Just my opinion but I would take a dagger any day if not for speed and accuracy alone. Being military and all just look up these to. Fairbairn-Sykes and the modern M3. I might be a bit bias being Ex Special forces though.

The dagger was designed to pierce chainmail at close range and real medieval chainmail is very hard to hack through and you're not going to get through it with a Bowie but a dagger will go in the center of one of the rings and it breaks the rivet in the ring and pierces the flesh.

Forget about "intimidation." If it came down to it and I had to use a knife to defend myself, I would only use it as a surprise attack...the guy wouldn't know I had a knife until he was being sliced open. If he knows I have it, he could potentially disarm me and use it against me. Intimidation tactics are for people who like to bluff...action is everything.

The trouble here is you're comparing apples and oranges, without reference to History. The Rapier and dagger came about as armour plate as worn on the late Battlefield by late-era Knights was so thick and well made that it was imperious to regular period swords. So they began using a long thin strong and lightweight blade that was designed to attack the weak chainmail areas of the armour at vital points, which also needed to have flexibility. This resulted in a long Square concave-shaped cross-section blade for stiffness, strength and edge retention. These swords were then retained in modified form as we approached the Elizabethian era where less armour was worn in favour of agility. The Dagger you refer to was an additional weapon used to penetrate the vital areas when close in, or if the Sword wasn't strong enough to penetrate through. Also, it was illegal for most to carry a sword, as this was a sign of a Gentleman, whereas most peasants could carry a dagger, not the Rapier companion you show, but a Bollock dagger or a Dirk in Scotland. The Scots and Irish brought these with them to the USA and the Bowie Knife evolved from there, as Dirks come in many forms, and can perform very similarly to a Bowie Knife and Did. Having one thick plain edge with just the Bottom section sharpened for Back-cuts and to help with the stab, the other side was very sharp for its entire length and intended to be used in conjunction with a buckler in Combat. The Bowie was a function of later times where no such protection was to be worried about, as early firearms were present. Both Dirks and Bowie Knife were intended in most cases to be a one-stop weapon serving all purposes for its owner.

for home defense i would go with a machete, sword or other long weapon. i have guns in my house, but they are in a safe and out of reach. i keep a katana, tomahawk, and bowie by my bed and ive ordered a machete to add to my collection.

Then you should get the Cold Steel Laredo Bowie or Cold Steel Natchez Bowie. All he did was remove the factory handle and rehandle the knife with a custom handle. He does knife mods, custom jobs, and makes his own knives. Not sure if he is still in business but that is what he use to do.

I don't want look rude but information about the dagger is erroneous, I have studied 15-17 centuries street combat and the rapier if used with a dagger was engineered with a such long reach that they were the weapon of choice to puncture the opponent, the dagger were not made to "stab stab stab" , but to stop the trust from the adversary....

use what you have around the house and locate things where you are always within reach of some kind of weapon. machetes, baseball bats, folding shovels, kitchen knives, broken bottles, bear mace, lengths of chain, hammer, crowbar. find something that works for you, get used to the idea its all you need and get very comfortable with it. keep an open mind should anything happen about how can i use what is close as a weapon? (toilet lid, hot sauce spit in the eyes etc. pm me if you want more ideas

That "kissing Crane" is awesome. Would you say that blade is good or is it just something nice to look at? I'm thinking about spending some cash on a good custom but I'd like the kissing crane to be my first Bowie.
