Excellent advice! I have taken 4 strokes off my handicap by following your advice. Two things to add: 1.) It takes real mental discipline to stick to the plan and play shots that are within my ability. Since I don’t have a caddy to remind me not to do something foolish, I have to be my own caddy. 2.) It is vital to develop some skill at short pitches and chips. Committing to the shot and making a positive swing is so much easier when I force myself to pick a straightforward target. For example pitching into the middle of the green instead of trying to hit the “perfect” little pitch just over the bunker onto the collar so it trickles down to the hole. For me, uncertainty leads to tentativeness and deceleration. Keep up the good work!

That is fantastic Robert. I always say to people imagine you are caddying for yourself. Or as another subscriber to this channel (David Leigh) calls it WWBD. What would Brian do? Hes asks that before he hits every shot. You have the concept now it is just the mental discipline to do it before every shot. It is a hard thing to do and does take some practice. You are making great inroads into your score reduction. I am proud of you. Brian

The biggest issue for mid handicap golfers is to not get stressed on your off days. I know I can break 80 ( twice so far) but that score is like my 3/10 golf shot; I can't perform to that level every time without increasing my time on the course more than I am willing to do. I rate my scores in sections; A is 80-85, B is 85-90, C is 90-95, D is 95-100. During winter I was playing C&D games often. Suddenly I dipped into an A game, but mainly I am playing B &C. Accept it and learn from what you did poorly.

What a great summary Kym. Even the best players in the world only have their "A" games 10% of the time. The secret is to not try and get to your "A" game when you only have your "D" game on the course. Play with what you and and try and fix it after your game. You are well and truly on the right track. Brian

Great advice! I like to think of every hole as a par 5 and my target is to get as many under par as I can. It takes the pressure off and par 3s become an easy birdie and sometimes eagle hole.

Brian, this video is one of your very best. The conversion from 90,s to 80’s is right in my wheelhouse right now. I played last week with the intention of taking the shot I knew I could make. I told my golf partner that this was my plan for the entire round. Between that and being aware of seeking a landing spot at the green rather than aiming for the flag, well I had an enjoyable round. I experimented with using my seven instead of reaching for the wedge and was encouraged with the results. So a combination of your instructions makes for a score that is slowly but surely coming down. Thanks for the instructionals, they work.

Brilliant Bob. I am proud of you. It takes a lot of course to do what you have done and to tell your partner your plan really puts it out there. It definitely works as you have discovered. The hardest bit is remembering to stick to the plan. I am sure you give 80 a nudge. Brian

Another visit to the doctor well worth it, a great plan is only as good as the execution, hope I can do it justice on Thursday and break 90 for the second time in my life. Current GA25.5. Will be playing off 24 on white markers. An 89 would be a nett 65.

You are right Rob. Knowing it and remembering to do it are two totally different things. Just keep plugging away at it. I know if I caddied for most people (90 -100 shooters) they would knock at least 8 shots from their score without a swing change. Good things are just around the corner. Brian

Thanks Brian. There were so many excellent tips in this video that I had to write them down to remember them all. :-) I just recently started taking your 7 out of 10 shot recommendation and I’ve lowered my score by more than 12 strokes a round. It’s great advice and challenges me to keep focused on getting the lowest score I can per hole rather than trying to hit the miracle shot and blowing up my round when it doesn’t work. (Which it never does. Haha)

One hole on our course generally requires a shot over trees to a narrow green. I never go for it because I know I will probably end up hitting the trees and going OOB. I have seen so many people take it on and end up shooting 7's and 8's on this simple par 4. I'm happy to take a 5 and move on.

Sorry to hear that David. But you can use that to your advantage and work on some of your short game elements. Putting can be done indoors using a putting mat or just on the carpet. If you get bored quickly there is always my online putting training course.... If you get some plastic balls with holes you can work on your chipping. The coin drill from my last KZbin shots video is a good one. You could also play a game of leap frog. Trying to land the ball progressively further than the last. I might make some KZbin #shorts over the next few weeks for you guys up north to do at home. Stay well. Brian

On those shorter holes with potential trouble like trees or water, I prefer a 1/2 or 2/3 swing with my driver which is easily a 7 out of 10. This shot is a low punch usually down the middle and about 75% as long as a full swing. Your tip on the hybrid chip or 2 iron is excellent. It is amazing how easy it is to dial in the distance with the hybrid chip with only a little practice.

Good advice again Brian. My issue is not sticking to my pre - shot routine. I use an acronym PAVFER. It stands for Plan, Aim, Visualize, Feel , Execute & Review. For any shot I like to think what is my purpose and how am I going to achieve it ( plan), then I like to have a small specific target, then I stand behind the shot line and visualize the shot, then take practice swing or three to feel the turf and feel the shot , with the target in mind then I execute the shot and finally watch it fly and think how did that go? what worked/ what didn't&why? If I get a bit off the game plan, I fall down at feeling the turf and my results vary ( hit it fat/ thin usually) If I can hit it by feel and not think too much it seem to work better. Having an intermediate point to hit the ball over helps me too.

That is fantastic Maurice congratulations. If you can shoot 84 a sub 80 is not far away. Hit an extra club into the green when hitting anything more than a 9 iron (ie instead of a 9 hit an 8). Work on getting the ball a little closer to the hole with your chip shots. Whatever you average distance to the hole is after you hit a chip just hit it 3 feet closer. Work on your putting distance control on putts of over 15 feet. These should go a long way to helping you. Keep me posted on your progress. Brian

Hi , this all sounds great but the bigger problem for me is that I sometimes chunk the ball , top it , slice it etc so I can't even take your tips on board because ny goal every time I play is to just bloody get a decent strike , this is the real world for me , I wish I could try what your suggesting When you were faced with that shot behind the bunker and the water , I would not have the confidence to go over over high like you did , I would have had to play across and extra safe , again it's all about the contact, I make decent contact about 50 percent of my shots , 35 percent is dodgy , other 15 percent is horrible and that's what destroys my card, , a good round for me is to break 90 which happens the odd time , cheers
