I once heard a really good way to have your parents pick you up without losing face with your friends. If your in an uncomfortable situation, you text your parents the letter "X" (or some other predetermined signal) and they will call you and say that there's an emergency at home and they need to pick you up.

Here's another awkward situation: As a homeschooler I am terrified to step outside before the public schools let out. Dog has to go do his business outside. You know it's your turn to walk. However, as you look out the window of your room you see a sea of public schoolers and their backpacks and their lives. What do you do? Well, obviously you wait until at least 4:00 to step outside the house so that no one knows you don't go to school but spent the whole day procrastinating on your co op homework. Anyone else relate?

I grew up super sheltered, when I was little my Mom had something against a lot of stuff with magic or Greek mythology in it, like no Barbie movies, no Fairly Odd Parents, and to this day I have not seen Disney's Hercules. I was also restricted from literally all of cartoon network, and my first video game console was the Wii (long after the hype for the wii died). Now, as a 17 year old, my best friend is constantly teasing me about the amount of stuff I missed out on in my childhood.

I never thought of myself as sheltered.... until I realized I was the only cheerleader on the squad at my CHRISTIAN SCHOOL who wasn't listening to Beyoncé and, I dunno…. whatever modern crap people were listening to when I was in high school. And since their moms were the drivers for the games because we didn't have a bus, they got to choose the music. I never heard so many sexually suggestive lyrics on one car ride. I felt stupid for being the only one not singing along. But I'd have felt even worse if I HAD joined in. After that, I learned to bring my portable CD player (this was back before even iPods were mainstream) and headphones and just turn up the Newsboys and Broadway soundtracks. You'd be surprised how well The King and I drowns out even a van full of teenage girls screeching along with hip-hop.

I connect with this on every level. And I love how Jordan debunked the theory that being sheltered makes you faint-hearted...by saying that this kind of life is not for the faint of heart.
@LexAnnalyn
@LexAnnalyn 5 жыл бұрын
Being sheltered didn't bother me much-most of my friends were from similar backgrounds, and I didn't have much of social life in high school. Once I started making media choices on my own, though, I definitely appreciated my parents' sheltering. It was nice to have them make decisions, protect me from things I wasn't ready to process. When I started to make more of my own media decisions, around age 17, I made definite mistakes-I shouldn't have watched the anime Berserk, for example. There were other times when I made better choices: "After seeing a few episodes, I can see I'm not ready for this show yet-maybe in a few years" or "Nooooope, this one doesn't have enough good to it to make up for the bad. It's not for me, will never be for me." Looking out for your mind and heart requires active attention. Parents help with that in childhood. And in adulthood... well, it helps when your parents have helped you learn not just what to avoid, but why-and how to find truth and redeemable things in a not-exactly-squeaky-clean world.

I was sheltered for a long time and then I lived with my Grandma who un-sheltered me. I went to tech school instead of college and the kids were discussing TV shows they liked as a kid: Kid 1:Do you remember Power Rangers? Others: Yeah! That show was awesome! Me: Oh, I couldn't watch that. Kid 2: Why? Me: Because my parents didn't want me to copy the fighting in the show. ("You are weird" stares) Kid 1: Hey, do any of you remember Zoey 101? Others: Yeah! Me: I didn't watch that. It didn't look interesting to me. Kid 2: So what did you watch? Me: Well, mainly I watched Disney movies....and I watched Veggie Tales. Kid 2: WHAT DA (BEEP) IS VEGGIE TALES? Me: Well, first off....that was NOT necessary, and 2nd, it's an animated video series for Christian kids! (More "you are weird" stares.)

When someone tells a dirty joke... ....let them be. We all have different types of humor. Unless they're meant to genuinely hurt someone (this is so much different than roasting somebody else, mind you, because the roastee knows and probably thinks it's funny), just let 'em joke. Bring Jesus up on a more appropriate time. TRUST ME. YOU will become the center of attention and will make things VERY awkward and you will loathe yourself for life because of it ;;w;; I know because I did it. I was not as cool and holy as I thought I would be.

I remmber when I was like 8 and I was gonna ride with a friend and her mom in they're new jeep, not even off road or anything, but I was kind of a small kid for my age and legally still had to use a car seat. So I had to walk all the way back to my house, get my booster seat, and carry it back down to her house so I could go..... 'twas quite embarrassing.

I like that my parents put limits and after a while they allowed me to watch things at my own discretion and now we can enjoy a ton of things that when i was younger wouldn't have been good for me.
