I looked up overcoming depression, and this guy showed up on the top of the results. After watching the video, I thought “this guy gets it”. These have been super helpful.

Another really useful video thank you. With regard to the point about continuing to see friends - I saw less and less people as I knew that the traumatic event would be the main or sole topic of conversation. Although time has moved on I never got back to the relationships that previously existed and probably never will

Hi Pete - that detachment and distance from others can occur, especially people who may have been involved at the time of the trauma. But even if not, withdrawal from interactions because a person knows the topic of the trauma will come up is extremely common.

Dr. Rami, thanks a lot for your video. I am someone with anxiety disorder and instructive thought. After a year, I cured 95%, unluckily I experienced a traumatic event recently. I know how to deal with intrusive thoughts, but I don’t know how to deal the feeling and thoughts related to the traumatic event. So for your points DONT 2)ignore your feelings 4) intentionally dwell on the traumatic event. They are a bit confusing for me. When thought and feeling related to the traumatic event show up, what shall I do? How to not distract from it nor ruminating at the same time? ( I feel like that is either way ahead). Thanks again!

Good question. The idea is that the person should not try and suppress or intentionally avoid thinking about the traumatic event, because that will just cause those memories and thoughts to keep coming up. So the idea is to allow the thoughts and memories to come up and do nothing about them. Eventually they will pass, without effort to make them go away.

I was referring to thoughts about a traumatic event that a person may have experienced recently. I will be posting future videos on how to manage intrusive, upsetting or nonsensical thoughts (usually in the context of OCD) in future videos, so keep an eye out for those.

Thank you for this video Dr. Nader. The day after this video was posted, I experienced what feels like a traumatic experience. While I was camping in nature, I saw a body floating in the lake by my camping area and rushed out to see if it was possible to save a life, but quickly realized that the person had been dead for a while, due to the smell and condition of the body. I have never experienced anything like this before and four days later, I am stuck with a feeling of depression and anxiety that I can't seem to get rid of. I understand that this is very individual, but are you able to guesstimate how long I will feel like this, if I follow the advice you are giving in this video? Do you have any additional advice? I would really appreciate any response. Thank you. ❤

I can't provide any specifics for individual cases. However, in general, for many people, the upsetting emotional symptoms can improve within a month or so. But, like I said, this varies widely among individuals and different types of trauma.

I am going to try this tomorrow. In the absence of immediate access to friends (work tends to do that) are there any other environments you would suggest?

Hi Julian - it's a bit challenging right now in the midst of a pandemic to connect with individuals or groups of people. I've done a previous video on understanding the nature of a person's social network; if you haven't already watched it, you may want to take a look to see if it gives you any ideas: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nF7VZ56FnqecbpY I'm going to be posting more videos on expanding a person's social network in the coming months, so please keep an eye out for them.
