The Uffington White horse is by far the oldest of the White Horses that adorn many hillsides across the United Kingdom. Obviously a landmark that has been around as long as this one has some stories around it. I delve into these on this video.
I apologise for not having better footage of the horse. It's really better to see from the air or further away. Hopefully you still enjoy this video.

As it was a beautiful day I stopped off an did a little time lapse while I ate some lunch. That can be found here - • UFFINGTON WHITE HORSE:...

Thanks Ellis, it is wonderful to revisit the White Horse through this video. This used to be my stomping ground (the local pub was excellent) & as a kid I learnt to toboggan down Dragon Hill on a tray. A walk along The Ridgeway would be a worthy trek indeed :))

I popped to see the White Horse on the way back home from visiting a friend. Because of that it was slightly later in the day so I didn't have as much time to enjoy it as I wanted. I need to go back one day and do the full tour and maybe a trip to the forge.

Nice video! Glad you gave a shout-out to Wayland's Smithy 🥳 there's also a Roman temple further down the Ridge Way to the east, which may have once been a Celtic temple, and the area has long been recognised as a location of horse-breeders (there's gallops everywhere), so self-fulfilling prophecy or signpost? Really good folklore video! Keeping it alive 😄

I was gutted I didn't make it to Wayland's Smithy. Truth be told I visited on my way back from visiting a friend the night before, so I was a touch hungover. I do want to go back and do some more walking around the area so I'll add the temple to the list. Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks! I wouldn't mind visiting during one of the "Scourings" as the whole process is fascinating. Was it a video or TV show you watched?

Really enjoyed this OWTB ( I feel bad not knowing your name... hehe, I'm Alessa btw, but would love to call you other than your channel name unless that's what you prefer :D ) But wow! Your narration paints a fantastic story, i felt captivated throughout. I've still not seen the Uffington Horse yet but it's on the list. Really enjoyed this! Thank you!

Hello Alessa! My real name is Ellis but feel free to call me whatever you like :). It's a lovely walk around the horse and there is even more in the area that I didn't get to. 100% recommended.

But its not a 'horse' is it. If you join the dots, as it were, it is the constellation of Leo, plus or minor a few stars.

Even if it's based on that constellation, we have no idea what they called it back then. Probably not Leo, as there were never any lions in Britain.

It's very possible that it's based on the constellation. But perhaps the original creators did it for that but instead of a lion they saw a horse in the stars? The depiction is noted as being similar to other celtic images which definitely relate to horses. But due to it's age that image might have been superimposed onto whatever the original creators intended. It's at least been referred to as a horse since the 11th century.
