Thanks for joining me here! I’m Cassondra, a homeschooling, Canadian mom of two living in Yellowknife, and this is a video talking about the myths that we heard about living in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada before we moved here. I talk about things like the Yellowknife weather, Yellowknife food prices, and some things that may deter other people from living here in Yellowknife. I hope this video isn't too rambly for you! lol!

You are so delightful! Helpful information for anyone hoping to move to or visit YK! Like me someday! I would love to come see your new city. I discovered it via Ice Road Truckers years ago and have been fascinated with it ever since! So really happy to be part of your channel.

Temperature is funny. I grew up on Vancouver Island and lived in Vancouver for 15 years. Rarely went below 0 or over 22 (Celsius). But those seemed extreme. When we moved to the interior I told my husband I was a “delicate west coast flower.” Not sure I could survive the colder temperatures. But I find anything less than -10 I rarely even wear a coat. When there’s no wind or moisture in the air it doesn’t feel as cold. But I visit my Mom at +2 and the coastal rain chills me to the bone 💜❤️💜.

When it comes to groceries Yellowknife is a little more expensive than places like Alberta...but Yellowknife is nowhere as expensive as Inuvik for food. I lived in Inuvik and it was pretty expensive. Yellowknife is a really neat city, lots to do outdoors. The only drawback is the bugs but they are everywhere in the north...you deal with it.

hehe the ropads and snowmobile thing is hilarious, I live in the Fraser valley lowermainland area of BC, and years back I went to a bbq across the boarder there were allot of people from Cali there and many of them were asking me the same things , so I told them a complete lie of that I couldn't afford a Snowmobile and so I have a dog sled with DOgs and when I head back after this BBq and get acorss the boarder about 1 hr drive I wil have to use the Dog sled to get home and many people believed me hehe I would imagine that many things would mbe more expensive and maybe not even have accesds to becasue it would have to be flown in or brought in via truck . I would imagine that Fruiit and vegis would be this way more of fruit through but then again I always would think ther possibly would be Hydroponic places growing tomatoes and other vegis

When people mention the supposed high cost of food I think they are making 2 mistakes: the confuse Yellowknife and Nunavut AND they are remembering stories of Yellowknife from back in the day (00s and before) when stuff was more expensive. Since the construction of the Deh Cho bridge, goods can be brought in to Yellowknife by truck year-round. Prior to this, trucks could go in the summer (ferry) or winter (ice road) but fall and spring required flights in. This is why things were expensive. They’re also just assuming that Yellowknife, which has been connected to the rest of Canada by road since 1960, is like the small, isolated communities of the NWT and Nunavut where you do see the very high prices.

That’s a great video idea- differences between Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and Iqaluit, Nunavut! Thank you! And no there is not any cities comparable in size to Yellowknife, just smaller communities. The next largest is Hay River which is 3,500 approx and we have 40000 or so. Lol!

@@LifeinYellowknife it works out here for me cuz I’m working for the government. However, I’ve found the cost of living in NWT is cheaper than here and it feels more like you live in an urban area. Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of myths ppl are saying abt Iqaluit and the North as a whole. As long as I can afford the life i wanna live while working here I don’t mind living here. I might be moving to YN in the future tho. Cheers.
