Not cringe at all. In a sea of "gaming journalists" who don't give many rats' asses about the games they test, having someone like Mortym playing the games to 100% and offering an objective view encompassing all of the the pros and cons of the game is a blessing! I also hope he gets picked up by algorithm. Keep up the good work Mortym!

@@Swatyo It should be easy if you run a simple enough party, for example 3-4 fighters, a cleric and a wizard. And you prebuff before the fight, just roaming the map. BG1 has mostly low level enemies plus you can fiddle with easy difficulty settings.

I'm so happy Arcanum made it to this list. It's one of my favorite games ever! The world is just so full of potential and is begging for a remaster, a remake or just a new entry. You should definitely give it a try and play "Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor" which is a Forgotten Realms DND game released in 2001 by Ubisoft and "Sacrifice" released in 2000 by Shiny and Interplay Entertainment. Especially Sacrifice is such a hidden gem.

Bloodlines is an absolute classic. It has some great mods too, some of which add entirely new content using assets that were never quite finished, such as joining the Sabbat. One restores an entire act that was cut from the game, it's pretty solid and adds several extra hours of content.

BG1 is a game from my childhood thats only gotten better the more I play it. Nothing will beat the first time, but after every extra playthrough I find more ways to enjoy it. With different small paths to take, and deciding what party composition to take, it just feels really good. Still need to play some multiplayer though, as I've only ever tried that out once years ago.

Bloodlines was awesome. still very playable (with community mods/patches). The first RPG I can remember that I loved was The Summoning, released in 1992. Veil of Darkness released a year later was also great. My favorite classic RPG is Wizardry 8 however, and Sir-Tech's TBS Jagged Alliance 2 still being my favorite game to date. System Shock and System Shock 2 along with the original Deus Ex would be my pick for classic RPG/FPS titles. Along with Strife and Cybermage... The one old D&D game that I wish one could still acquire and actually play would be Birthright: The Gorgon's Alliance!

For my own favorite classics, I'm quite fond of Dark Sun 1 and 2. They're less roleplayish than the ones on your list though, so might not be your cup of tea. Then there's Ultima 5 Lazarus, a fantastic fan version of Ultima 5 done with the(nowadays very dated) Dungeon Siege engine. One of the best RPGs I've ever played. HOWEVER! You MUST be a fan of the Ultima series and know who the characters are for it to make any sense, otherwise it'll probably be far less interesting since it's very heavy on the in-setting stuff.

The Ultima series doesn't get much love anymore though they were groundbreakingly awesome in their day. U4 is considered the classic but for my money U7 The Black Gate was the pinnacle of the series. Great list of must play games! As to which other games I would consider a true classic and which I often revisit: Among them is Severance: Blade of Darkness from 2001. A game which in retrospect shares some similarities with Dark Souls. While combat could be clunky at times, it's atmosphere, level design and story telling was superb. The shadows were years ahead of their time. There is a remaster these days and it's even available on the switch. Give it a try!

The Baldur's Gate series will always be extremely special to me, as they were the first games I bought with "my own money" as a kid, and played obsessively. On BG1 versus BG2: I think I still would say BG2 is better overall simply because of the more expansive interactions with your companions over BG1, which are pretty much the defining point of the series for me. However, I recently worked my way through Baldur's Gate 3's early access version, and I'm coming to appreciate the virtues of lower-level gameplay and combat in D&D--having to manage your limited spells and resources in combat situation, and do a lot with a little, as opposed to the high-level play of BG2, where you can fling fireballs and rays of whatever until the cows come home. Anyway, I'm just about to revisit BG1 and BG2 for the millionth time, while I wait for the full release of BG3 in August. A great video as always, Mortym.

Mortym, and all those interested in playing Baldur's Gate 1, I cannot recommend highly enough trying the Neverwinter Nights 2 mod: Baldur's Gate Reloaded. It's a faithful recreation by a bunch of die hard fans of the original, all played within a semi-modern cRPG that has a more familiar UI & controls similar to other modern games of the style. The folks behind it have been working on Baldur's Gate 2 reloaded for the last several years, and it's due out this spring. Which means you can play BG 1 & 2 Reloaded and then hop strait into Baldur's Gate 3 in the fall. :D

Some of the classics I enjoy are Jagged Alliance 2, which to me is the best turn based tactics game, much more memorable and interesting than X-Com to me. Especially with the fan-made 1.13 patch that adds a whole lot of content and makes the whole experience highly customizable if you aren't afraid of diving into the ini file. S2 Silent Storm is another turn based tactics game. This one is in 3D though. And set in a fictional version of the 2nd World War. A lot of jank in this one. But some aspects have not been matched. Like the destructible environment. You can blow up a wall and every single brick can be seen tumbling away. Hugely impressive.

Solid picks. I love ego draconis (more than DOS2) but never played the first divinity game, and I prefer BG2 to the first but both are great. Is Dragon age origins too "recent" to be considered a classic ? I think it's still the best spiritual successor but maybe that will change soon... Arcanum I'd put in the same category as Torment : great world and story but almost everything else is even worse (UI, combat, balance, loot...). A remake of this game would be so great but the rights are probably in the same place as the final boss of the game now :D The world of darkness is my favorite setting period after playing so many tabletop sessions, and Bloodlines is a great adaptation - and I don't even like grimdark and modern settings in games in general

I have always stanned Baldur's Gate 1 *over* Baldur's Gate 2 - despite the many, MANY things that 2 improved upon - if for no other reason than that Baldur's Gate 2 was the first (PC video) game in memory that TOOK AWAY the living, breathing bits of the world *in-between* the main quests and locations...to its detriment. I was 2023-years-old when I first heard someone describe Baldur's Gate 1 as their "first open-world game"...and I cannot disagree - that is the best description I can think of.

I'm a hobbyist\amateur game designer and I am working on a diceless ttrpg system that I one day want to make into an infinity engine style crpg. The setting is going to be Victorian era steampunk magic, of course. I don't exactly plan on having magic and tech fully diametrically opposed, though. I also think it would be great to have the elves, with their high intelligence, be the ones to develope technology. And, dwarfs be the one that stay traditionally magical.

Good choices. For me all these games have two common things. World and atmosphere. They are not perfect, have their issues, but they can build atmosphere like no other games. And all those worlds are so alive and great. Modern games have countless things to do, beautiful graphic, 100+ hours of gameplay, but just watching daily life of minor NPC in Gothic is so much for me.

Considering my age when I feel mortismal's "classic games" list equals "modern games". :D I started out with Ultima I and Pools of Radiance but did not get deep into it until Eye of the Beholder on the Amiga. In 94-95 many AAA companies and magazines declared the CRPG genre to be dead and outdated and it was considered dead until Baldur's Gate revived them in 1998. Daggerfall and Diablo being exceptions to the rule. Since November I have primarily played CRPG's from the late 80'ies or early 90'ies on DOS or the Amiga.

My number 1 gaming wish would also be some sort of spiritual successor or sequel to Arcanum. Such a cool game that I wish was more mechanically sound. I'm still praying that inXile is secretly working on that right now

If you like Gothic 2 that much you should play Chronicles Of Myrtana. 10/10 Mod.

@Mortismal Gaming, Have you played the original Deus Ex game? I think it would be right up your ally. Ridiculous amounts of systems in such an old game, I was finding new things in it even after multiple playthroughs.

Ah the good ol' days of Gothic II: Night of the Raven, the nostalgia (for simpler times).

I agree that Baldur's Gate is a great classic game. I just replayed it and then BG2 (I have trouble deciding which of my Steam Queue games to play next so I'm just going in chronological order now). Since I prefer playing as a magic user, I'd say I enjoyed BG2 more since magic is so underpowered in BG1. I do think they really should be played back to back as to me they comprise one very long game. I played Throne of Bhaal back when these all originally were released, but this time after playing BG1&2 back to back I was a bit burned out and while I started ToB I couldn't stick with it. It just seemed like the grand story came to a good ending in BG2 and I didn't need ToB. I will likely continue it eventually.

This list made up for you not liking Fallout. :D But seriously, apart from Fallout, these are my favorite video games from the late 90's, early 00's. Fantastic selection!

I suddenly realize the only RPG I really return to and have a full fun time with, is bloodlines. It's probably the game I replayed the most, and I still find myself having fun in it. While there are RPG's I know I love, I ask myself more lately - which ones do I actually want to replay? Hardly any of them, sadly... Allot of them are 1 time experiences for me, mostly because the mechanics are tedious, the narrative is a 1 time ticket... Once I know it, I have little to add by replaying it... And most of what I do there feels like labor work now.

How much you mention these games in other reviews or top tens, it was kinda obvious what will you chose. Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines and Divine Divinity is among my favorites as well, and would return to them ever so often. Aside from that, Baldur's Gate II, Sacred, Diablo and Revenant are some of others which are dear to me.

Love your list. I would argue that BG2 is a bit better than BG1 as its higher level and more epic, bigger bosses, bigger baddies etc. Divine divinity unfortunetly never dragged me in and it is such a chore to get into it now. But 100% agree with your comments on Arcanum and Gothic 2.

It would be very interesting to see Mortym cover Stardew Valley. It's one of thebest games of all time for me despite being a mainly action/RPG player, it would be interesting to see what his take would be on it.

Replaying Baldur's Gate 1 right now on Steam Deck, such a classic, and I too prefer it over BG2. Just love the low-to-mid level grounded atmosphere and open-ended exploration, not to mention preferring the Sword Coast as a setting. Also looking forward to Siege of Dragonspear and early BG2, but honestly dreading Throne of Bhaal and unenthusiastic about late BG2...

You are doing reviews in a very fast way, you already played I think almost everything I know from my youth (from here I would have to search my brain for SNES era lost in my head). I will dare say two games you didn't play, but I don't even know if it is worth the effort: VtM Redemption and Dink Smallwood.

I am generally not too interested in list -videos, and for most channels this one would be quite futile. But in your case two years means roughly a literal hundred games played, which makes it actually worth checking out, both for the games and the actual opinion having been forged through experience.
