Thank you for this information! I’ve been looking for a large evergreen to use as a screen in zone 8b. I think I’m going to give #5, the juniper Gin Fizz a try. It will have lots of sun, but be on the north side of our property, so hopefully the summer heat and humidity won’t take it out! Thanks again! 💚🌿

I work at a local nursery in Indianapolis, and sell all of those plants except Gin Fizz Juniper. Seems like the berry production on it is better than most Junipers! I am absolutely in love with the Anna's Magic Ball Arborvitae. I have one planted right by my mailbox because it will stay dwarf forever with no pruning! Also I don't quite get why Gem Box Inkberry Holly is less hardy than the straight species. Inkberry Holly is hardy to zone 4 and even survives zone 3, yet Gem Box is listed zone 5. Maybe the dwarf size somehow decreased it's hardiness. 🌲❄️

How does Anna's Magic Ball hold up with snow piled on top? When they plow near our mailboxes it gets high. Would it weigh down the middle of the plant?

We removed a large holly tree from our backyard last year because it was like a giant sticker bush. I do love the fall color, but the crunchy, sharp dead leaves were blown all over the yard and it was horrible to touch or walk on. Is the one you showed a different variety? How come the leaves aren't sharp?

I've always been afraid to put Arborvitae shrubs in my yard because of the weight of the snow always misshapes them. Are they strong enough to stand up to that now? Love the looks of each one. Especially like the Anna's Magic Ball because of the size it stays and shape. Thanks for the information. See you in the next one.

She has one behind her greenhouse/cold frame that had some damage from snow but she's waiting a year or so to see if it recovers. But that's one out of over 70 that she and Aaron planted. (Another one got scorched and I think two others dropped dead on her but not from snow [I don't think].)

So I just wanna shout out a MAJOR KUDOS for mentioning the berries being toxic! I spend hours researching toxic vs nontoxic plants because I have a crazy pup that tries everything that's pretty 😅. Absolutely NO plants containers list toxic or not and it's kind of frustrating I think the companies selling plants should consider listing this cuz alot of plant parents don't consider these things and next thing ya know there bringing there pup to the vet cuz they don't know what's wrong and well it can be terminal which is sad knowing this could've been prevented by just knowledge.

Fluffy just might be the arborvitae I'm looking for to replace the 50yr old Emerald that flanks the steps up to my front porch! I string christmas lights on it every winter but it's such a vigorous plant that I have to spend a lot of time pruning it to maintain the max. 12ft height for the job. A compact evergreen arborvitae that only grows 10-12 ft is the answer. The Emerald is coming out next spring (groan) and Fluffy it is!

Is Juniper Gin Fizz the only native plant in this list? I am searching for evergreens that are NONINVASIVE and Good for the birds. I don't want berries that are going to kill the birds in the winter! i just removed 4 giant bushes called heavenly bamboo because bird were dying on my land and upon research the berries on these bushes are poisonous to birds... there is nothing sadder than finding dead cardnials and woodpeckers in your yard in the winter... i mean there are sadder things but it is miserable.

It might be wise to have Ipecac Syrup on hand if you have poison berries. I have 1 out of 8 of my children who ate Western Snowberries that grew wild in a neighbors yard. I called poison control and was thankful that I had Ipecac on hand. Even though it rarely happens, there are some kids who love berries, like blueberries and they think other berries that look similar are edibles when they aren't. We often pick Huckleberries that grow wild in our woods in the NW and they are red and edible.
