they both have the ultra pixel camera, its just the the google edition does not have zoe or some of the camera filters and features that the stock one has but the both have the same camera, just different camera software

an easier way to get rid of (or more accurately get around) sense is to simply put a different launcher on your phone. Most of them out there run fairly close to stock android but you don't have to lose any of the software that supports the hardware in the phone, such as Zoe and the camera optimizations. I HIGHLY recommend doing this with every HTC One!

No, but with a custom recovery you can flash a Google Edition rom, that way you can have the best of both worlds. If you don't like stock Android, you can switch back to sense, and even restore your phone back to it's factory state in case you want to keep your warranty.

Just got my htc one a few days back. A little worried that htc wount be updating the software in time. So i think i will revisit this video and the tutorial in the future if htc doesnt deliver. Love the phone :) hope htc will continue making devices of this quality in the future, as last 2 years were kind of sluggish for htc . Thank for the video and almost convincing me to go vanilla. You can customize the app drawer. And I'm sure 4.2.2 for Sense 5 will make Blinkfeed will become optional. Just wait the update will be out this month.

Only Play edition phones I'm afraid. There are custom roms out there that give you a near stock experience. Pocketnow has done articles/videos on them before, so poke around the archive and have a look :)

The HTC One received the Android 4.2.2 update yesterday ( at least in France ). And Custom Roms had Android 4.2.2 with Sense 5 leaked builds for more than 2 months. And the update correct all the problems you talked about.

Using Nova launcher is more user friendly alternative to Sense. It looks like stock UI but adds more customisation.

Sense has never been fully ported succesfully to any other device that's not HTC but since this is a HTC phone it should work, but since it didn't bring Sense out of the box maybe it will break some features. It would be nice to be able to switch between Sense and AOSP on the google edition phone too

Honestly sense is simply worth it to me. With 4.2.2 coming out will have all of stocks features along with the extra something that HTC gives aesthetically and functionally

You can do that on any JB phone. Go to settings>about phone>keep tapping on the android version and it appears.

Taylor, I got a DNA on Verizon just weeks before the One (for Verizon) was announced. Don't get me wrong, it's a great phone and I love it, but I', dying for 4.2. Do you have any idea, heard any rumors, or can you make an educated guess as to when the 4.2 will land on the DNA?

I don't understand why people use blinkfeed and the app drawer as a reason to change the rom when you can just download nova launcher in 30 seconds and have the exact same thing. If you you get Nova launcher Prime you can just link the sense launcher to a nova gesture and swipe your way into blinkfeed without having to see it all the time. I used the htc one google play rom on my droid DNA and it was great but now that I have an actual one I dont want to give up camera performance & IR Blaster

i feel like most of the problems he discussed could be solved by downloading a custom launcher (nova, solo, apex, etc). that's probably the best of both worlds. you'll keep the useful sense features and have a stock look. it's also a hell of a lot easier than rooting and flashing a new rom.

Is there any improvement on speed/responsiveness when scrolling or making any sorts of input (start app, start widget, ...) ? With the original HTC firmware, sometimes I feel some sluggishness and observe choppy scrolling. (rarely noticeable to be honest and just perceived by the most picky ones)

I kinda have to agree with you on this one esp since Sense doesn't seem to be as heavy as Touch Wiz/Nature UX2. I was thinking about doing the same thing as a home launcher will fix the main issues with the One. But nah I'm straight. I forgot all about the 4 utrapixel camera and the software optimizations by HTC. Without it, the GPE version of the camera is just bleh. I'll just wait on the Nexus 5

Over The Air, it's an update you don't have to download and then manually flash in recovery.

It doesn't have all the features. A launcher like Nova only replaces homescreen and app drawer, your notification centre will still be Sense (with that ever-present Power Saver), along with your settings and you lose 4.2's lockscreen widgets. Plus when you return to your launcher's homescreen from Sense's lockscreen, it will momentarily flash as it recompiles all your apps/widgets. Believe me, I lived on Sense + Nova until this ROM came out, it's only half a solution.

Factually, these Google Play Edition phones are not running truly pure Android. From XDA: " These phones are sold via the Google Play Store (like the Nexus devices currently are), but will have software updates delivered by the OEMs, rather than Google. They also feature modifications to the pure Android experience (e.g the HTC One has a toggle for Beats Audio, and Sense frameworks in the ROM). To back this statement, the repacked Google Play Edition HTC One ROM weighs in at a whopping 432.29 MB

I find Beats Audio to be extremely shitty compared to when it's off. When it's on the bass is increased, yes but the vocals get muddy and sometimes there's a static sound. That's why I prefer it off.

I'm sorry to tell you but Beats Audio can't be turned off, no matter what you see in the options menu. When you turn off the switch, it just uses a different EQ, that is intentionally made to make Beats audio sound impressive when "turned on"

I'm still trying to figure out what are the reasons for changing to Google Play??? Especially if doing so gets rid of the camera and IR features. Personally, I'm not bothered by Blinkfeed and have a clean home-screen with most of my apps in folders(and bloatware hidden).

In my opinion, Sense 5 on the HTC ONE IS WAAAAAY BETTER than stock. You have the remote, HTC ZOE, HTC contentious shutter, HTC Blink feed HTC Gallery, and it just looks so damn sexy.

I would also choose stock Android. I wish to have the same option in Galaxy S3 (CM10 is not one of them - unstable&buggy "nightlies" and based on unofficial rom is not a good idea for a daily driver imo); so for the time being I use Omega rom 4.1.2 & JKay mod & Domination Theme and it works great ;). Yes all you have to do is root it, flash a custom recovery, install a Sense ROM. XDA developer website is your friend.

I don't live in the US and carriers don't subsidy phone in my country, it would probably be a lot cheaper to get the Google Edition from the Play Store than getting the One on a retail store here.

Sense is beautiful. Yes it has quirks but that will be taken away when android 4.2.2 comes out for it in the states. It's already happening in Taiwan. And it's also happening for it with the dual sim version. How did you guys forget to report about it?

You don't have to physically download the updates, mine automatically did the update after I had already had the ROM on my phone. Another plus one for this for me.

You also lose Fast HD 720 60 Frames per recording (the best quality everrrr) and the abilty for the front facing camera to adjust to low light or save the mirror image when you snap your picture on stock android rom edition

Root and flash a sense ROM. Vice versa to get your Sense edition into a Google one (albeit in both cases, you won't be able to get OTA updates and will have to rely on the devs over at XDA to release rooted OTA updates).

You can just run My HTC One conversion process to be able to convert your normal HTC One into a GPE HTC One. Complete with updates... So the video is kinda wrong because if you use my process on XDA you don't have to manually flash the updates.
