As a pro wedding editor, and having edited hundreds of wedding films, I also agree that Layering is most wanted when editing to get a compelling story-telling. My approach is: as I listen to the music, I cut it and assign different colors to each part for visual reference later. Then I work on the speeches and vows, placing the best parts very carefully over the critical moments of the music ( it is recommended to work with songs in both versions, lyrical and instrumental, and mix them as needed during the edit). The last task is to place the best footage over the story already built, chronologically or not, and working all the edit as a whole according to the style of the client (transitions, flares, fx, grading, fooleys, etc). It is lots of work to do but really exciting when completed!

tip about proxies, if you make them in camera you can simply link the proxy clips to the original in 2 seconds vs waiting around for fcp to create them

SO many great nuggets here even just beyond the ‘tips’ but focusing on the delivering the wedding you shot to your couple and not the wedding you want to release for the rest of us is really key

In FCP specifically I like to put those best shots and the speaking selections in their own storylines too. This lets you move them around easily like the magnetic mainline. Doing the same with multiple songs makes cutting and mixing songs easier too. I think.

I love these tips. Jason went through a lot of them with me and I'm so appreciative. My editing took ages and I've already started implementing these tips and have noticed a huge positive difference. Thanks to you and Jason!!

I appreciate this and agree with all of them except the last piece. I'm pretty sure those top wedding filmmakers could make a barn wedding in the southern mid-west look high-end. There's a lot we can learn from how those guys capture a wedding day.

Yep. But we never said don’t watch other wedding filmmaker… We do weekly film critiques and how BTS content because we believe in that as a form of education and growth. We are specially refrigerator to sitting in the edit bay. We are encouraging filmmakers to just stop using too filmmakers work as a comparison point while they are editing or agonizing over your edits endlessly because it’s not at that top level yet.

editing in layers is something that took me like 8 years to figure out. I dont use the same exact process as you do, but still the same concept and having those bench marks makes editing so much less daunting.

I fully agree with your workflow, but i edit by feel and i have tried this process, but i use a lot of sound design and feel to transitions, and work in the time flow of the video. I sometimes do batches of the video but i suppose i just feel right with doing it the hard way. 😭

I love these., but just sharing my way edited around a 100 Indian wedding films the thing I mostly notice about weddings here is the story of the wedding itself. Every wedding and culture is unique in its own way so is the couple. So, I create three projects for day1,2,3 & arrange every shot on the timeline and just play it. That’s the first time I watch em. That’s where I decide if the clip is needed or not, it’s a slomo or ramp , with or without audio , and so on. Once this is done , I could have caught up with some feeling and just search for the music that suits the feel of the event. Now add these final trimmed clips of 3 days into 3 layers , add music and go nonlinear 😅 definitely don’t know if this is right or makes any sense but I am confortable this way. But say me if this sounds stupid 😬

pro tip. dont edit with this blank clip in Final Cut. if you do this you might as well use resolve or premier pro. to be a faster editor in Final Cut learn how to use the magnetic timeline and also how to use connected clips (also known as secondary timeline) for example if you are doing a teaser and your music is the main driving flow if the film then use the audio clip in your main timeline and "connect" the clips to the audio and dont use this long grey blank media think as seen above. it might be strange to use the magnetic timeline but spending a few days learning it and how to use it properly (maybe try the ripple training course) where as once you figure it out Final Cut becomes a super fast beast of an NLE.

I do almost all of these. I use the magnetic timeline more in final cut but almost the same idea, I must have ADHD cause some days I can get 1 million things edited and others I stare at the screen with no wind in my sail. That's my issue.
