Most of the people are unpleasant, most of those who aren't are clueless, and those who are neither get cut early. One tribe kept beating up on the other, Exile Island outstayed its welcome, the pre merge went on ridiculously long, the change to HD somehow doesn't really capture the natural splendor. I think the last part has something to do with the fact that apparently no one could wash their clothes, so as the season dragged on everyone was increasingly drab and muddy. The whole thing feels like a Dark Ages season that somehow got plopped down in the middle of five great seasons. I've wondered if it and Philippines were supposed to be in each other's places.

@@BigMattXXL Good timing, as S27 was a transitional season that really set the stage for some excellent years of Survivor. I got back into the show for S25, which was also quite good, but I still had to slog through S26 before the renaissance began. I ask because the early 20s have a dreadful reputation, and I have to say it’s well earned, having gone on a marathon earlier this year to get caught up on everything from when my interest gradually dissipated in the post-S8 years through when I climbed back on board. Watching S17 I felt like it was a much better fit for those dark ages than for the much better seasons around it. In particular I felt it was a lot like S21. Both featured a lot of mean, nasty people who were endlessly bickering with each other; a much smaller number of people who understood what was going on but couldn’t play the game they wanted because their cast mates were too volatile; and a clueless winner who went on an unlikely hot streak of immunity wins in the end game before bumbling to victory. Your reflex is to say he’s an unsatisfying winner, but then you look around at the competition, and people who deserve it more are few and far between; plus at least the winner wasn’t a total asshole like the rest of the cast. Just wondering if you also liked that one. But I guess you can’t form an opinion if you’ve never seen it.

@@maeg.9123 It's a season that features one of the most bitter juries ever, with a whole lot of hurt feelings and broken friendships between players who were legitimate friends outside of the game. The final tribal council is less the jury asking the finalists to pitch their argument as to why they should vote for them, and more the jury absolutely lambasting them on national television. It's just really messy and hard to watch. The reunion is equally messy and uncomfortable, Jerri literally gets booed off stage by the audience for no reason. As a spoiler, since you haven't watched it, there's also the major issue of Richard Hatch rubbing his naked genitals all over Sue Hawk's back in the middle of a challenge. This caused her to feel violated and quit the game when she realized no one was in her corner after she made a point of saying how humiliated and violated she felt. When it happened, Jeff only mildly chided Hatch to cut it out, and when it got brought up at the next challenge by Jeff, he downplayed it which set Sue off. It's a season full of horribly uncomfortable moments, but also full of some really great ones. It's a mixed bag of a season, but a lot of the dark stuff really sandbags it.

Vanuatu is a fantastically paced season that tells the best underdog story of all time. With fast paced seasons you lose tons of good players and characters pre-merge. While uninteresting boring people get into the merge making it more obvious who is going to win. All of the young guys go pre-merge along with three unremarkable women. Then you are left with all of the most dynamic and interesting players/characters at the merge. Watching the men get picked off, until Chris, by the dominant Yasur 6 is absolutely fantastic. Then the entire game is flipped on its head entirely at the Final 7 when every player has a possible path to win the season. From that point forward it’s a wild rollercoaster until the end.

I have always said. Vanuatu is one of my top season. Micronesia, Cagyan and Vanuatu. Chris was, and still is on of the greatest winner all of time. Jeff´s behaviour at the reunion was awful, unprofessionall. I hated him. But I heard that he appoligized to Chris,

Pro: “Five Survivor Seasons that Nearly Broke Jeff Probst” is a well-conceived piece, excellently researched, crisply written and full of noteworthy information and opinion. (I’ve long wondered how & when Jeff became an Executive Producer on the show. Thanks for the backstory!) Con: The eleven minutes of underlying brainworm music wasn’t just subconsciously annoying, it became consciously nauseating. Your Survivor chops are superior, and you have credible YT skills. I was hooked early and motivated to watch the whole video, but the cyclical drone of that muzak gave me a headache in the process. There’s got to be a better way.

Not gonna lie while Thailand certainly has lots and lots of problems even very big serious problems. I need to say that Brian is for me one of the most interesting characters on the show ever. It is really as someone say his stile of sociopathic play. Just the way how everyone talks how they like him, how he is sweet and really cares about everyone. And then you hear him talk in confessionals how others are trash and he is just plainly better. Is just so fascinating. I really love Brian playstyle it's honestly so unique. But yeah Thailand is still very flawed season. And you are exactly true that Brian doesn't feel pain hahaa. Made me laugh a lot! Also Vanuatu one of the top seasons for me. I was honestly really mad during the Reuinon how Jeff was mean to Chris. While one season before he was literally orgasming on Rob's play which was in many really similiar to Chris. Chris is for me one of the top winners, he really went from "no chance" to "some chance" to "no chance" to "win" amazing haha.

I sorta wish we had more seasons like Gabon. Gabon was the second season I ever watched (the first, funnily enough, being Vanuatu, which is also in this video) and I absolutely enjoyed it. I wish modern survivor had that sorta trainwreck charm, or at least some of the great personalities like in Tocantins, HvV, or hell, even Cambodia: Second Chance. I think modern casting should cast people who make the show exciting and give it its twists and turns and dramatic moments, instead of people like Dan from IoI, or Liz from 46, both of whom were...not exactly the best people. The last person like this was Devens from EoE. We gotta have more!

I just recently rewatched Gabon and honestly it has to be one of my favorite seasons. It may not be the most “Survivor” season of Survivor but it is probably one of the best season for reality TV that the show has given us. I love all the drama and a lot of the eliminations really gagged me. The biggest gag was Sugar giving her idol to Marty to get out Crystal, I was not expecting that at all and literally start screaming when it happened. Then Randy getting tricked into using a fake idol will always be priceless and Crystal right before not keeping her vote a secret is something I quote daily. Definitely one of the most fun seasons to watch.

It's so funny watching these kind of recap videos because I haven't watched any of these seasons since they were on the air and I'm never sure how much I remember. Sometimes though you'll show a clip and all of a sudden it stirs a memory! If you'd asked me before if I remembered Gabon I would've said no, but Matty was my favorite for years - his proposal to his girlfriend was so sweet - and I liked Bob as well

I just thought of something I've never considered. What if Purple Kelly's edit was less to do with not liking her and more to do with disguising the fact she didn't have anywhere near the gear others did? For example, cutting out scenes where she mentions it in conversation or in confessional. Cause I mean if they show just how ridiculous it was then her quitting becomes more justified and it's a really bad look for the show as opposed to something that's sort of used as a joke or obscure knock years later.
@UnscrupulousAgitator Жыл бұрын
Her not having gear was her own fault. She should know, from previous seasons, that once called, it can start immediately. Everyone else kept covered, she, on the other hand, kept uncovered. Maybe trying to use her body as an advantage? Who knows, but it was her stupidity.

I like Gabon. It wasn't a Strategic masterpiece but the character development of the cast as the episodes go by is good. Jeff probably only hated it because it was one sided for the Kota tribe at the beginning and one sided for the Underdogs near the end. Tribe swaps after tribe swaps, twists after twists as if they're intentionally trying to manipulate the elimination order and they still didn't get the results that they wanted.

My theory with Gabon is that Jeff a) was dissatisfied with his position on Survivor b) had just broken up with or was going through the breakup with Julie Berry and was not happy in general.
