Hey Irene. I'm so happy I could know about your experience in this field since I'm opting to become a registered dietician too.! Can I ask what is your pay yearly as a fresher?

Hi there! I don't feel comfortable with sharing my pay publicly but I will tell you that for someone that holds a bachelor's and master's, it's not a lot. The US labor bureau has some stats for about how much dietitians make if you're wanting to know a rough estimate. Sadly, dietitians really don't make a lot of money despite all the education that is required. I personally was able to negotiate a higher pay starting out because I took a job in a more rural area and was familiar with the site (did my internship there). Sorry I wasn't able to completely answer your question, but hope that helps!

@@ireanybeany I do understand your situation and it's completely fine.! Thanks for helping me. There's one more thing I had to ask though, for someone who isn't from the US will it be difficult to work as an RD there? I mean do we have to study masters again after doing bachelor's and masters from our native country?

I'm actually not too sure about that as I went to school here in the US. But you can check out the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics websites (eatrightpro) to see if there is a way to transfer your credentials from a foreign country to the US.

I study nutrition and dietetics in Venezuela and it takes 5 years and the intership is included in the program (6 months of clinical and 6 months of comunity) we also have a lot of exposure to clinical settings from the begining. I think the US needs to improved in that aspect because you graduate with limited knowlege. Unable to practice as a dietitian. Is very restricted as well because no everyone gets interships is sad. A Lot of the experience you went through is similar to mind. I guess is similar everywhere

Hi there! Every internship is a little different- some have longer clinical rotations than others. I don't feel like I missed out even though I didn't have as much clinical experience in my internship. A lot of hospitals will train you when you first get hired so we get additional training even once becoming a dietitian. Also, not everyone goes into clinical positions, or wants to. I personally wasn't sure I wanted to go into clinicals so I really liked seeing the different aspects of dietetics and how it could be applied as well as the different career paths I could take. I'm also not opposed to having to take an exam after graduating. All other healthcare professions require it- doctors, nurses, physician assistants, physical therapists, etc. all require board exams or something similar prior to being able to practice. I don't think dietitians should be an exception from that. It's the only way to ensure that everyone has at least some sort of minimum knowledge and skills. Graduating doesn't mean much as different schools all differ in rigor and curriculum. And yes, unfortunately in a lot of places, dietitians are undervalued and underpaid. But I'm learning through my new job that there are places that dietitians are valued and listened to as well!

What books or hand books did you bring with you during your clinical rotation

I didnt personally bring any books or handbooks with me- just some notes from school!
