No Junk-Food? I’m going to Summer Camp this Tuesday. My friends are making me go and they told me that they have cereal for breakfast and Pizza or Burgers for lunch! And that we roast marshmallows. So I’m pretty excited!

Did you get to have Pizza and Burgers? I know this was 3 years ago... I am in the process of Do my first Acting (day) Camp and I also Bake, so I wanted to give out really nice Cupcakes ... I was surprised about the restrictions... Now I did know about the "NUT" allergy concern.

I am an Acting Director... and am (trying) now to have a Summer Acting Camp 2022 for Film and Theatre... What and why was your camping experience like... and what would you suggest for me in my Summer Camp?

My Summer Camp is just a 5 day camp... and some evenings... Not overnight. I'm also considering having a 2 week (day) camp. Lots to learn about Acting for Film and Theatre

I looked up the website of the camp I attended as a kid, and I see that they don't want kids to have cell phones. They probably don't want kids getting calls during activities. When I was in camp, my parents and I used to send cassette tapes to each other to keep in touch. We saw another kid doing a tape to his family, and we started doing that because the computer I had included a tape recorder so we had one to keep at home and one for me to take to camp. I remember there were special cassette mailers you could buy at Radio Shack.

The whole U.S. obsession with sending your children away for the Summer is strange. In most countries of the world, the summer holidays are a time for children to spend time with their parents - ie. for the whole family to vacation together - not for the children to be got rid of. In New Zealand, the traditional summer vacation is for the whole family to head to the beach for up to 4 weeks. It is almost unheard of for the children to be sent to one place while the parents go somewhere else.

It's not that parents are trying to get rid of their children. They have to continue working because unlike many other places paid vacation time is very limited. With summer break being 3 months long variety is important. I'm 16 now and during many summers when I was younger we went on road trips and took vacations but I still went to camp for a week or two every summer, some of my friends going for longer. Camp in the US is super fun and always the highlight of my summer. It's not just a place for our parents to dump us for a while, it becomes a second home. Now that I work at my summer camp as a counselor I'm able to see that I'm not the only one with a similar experience. :)

It’s not like that as outsider I can see how you see it as that but it’s not like that you can stay at camp how many weeks you want during the summer time but like some or most may not have time to because they have work but summer camps are fun some people go to camp for educational or religious reasons

I think summer camp is a good experience for kids though. In truth a lot of parents do this as an alternative to day care. If parents work a lot they might send their kids off to camp Personally I always had fun at camp, and I continue to do so as a counselor. My parents used to look forward to getting rid of all of their kids for a week simply because it was so rare for them to have the house to themselves. American summer vacations are also long enough that the parents might send their kids off to camp for a week or two, and then afterwards the whole family goes on vacation. This gets the kids to have more fun when the parents don't have enough vacation time to take the whole summer off

I know this is forever ago but... we don't get 4 weeks of vacation in the US unless you're in the very upper echelons (even teachers generally get a second job during the summer). So even if kids don't do sleep-away camp (which, honestly, is not that large a percentage of the population) they're going to day camps. Also, most kids don't get to experience 'the outdoors' much at all if they live in the cities or the suburbs. Camp provides them a safe place to go out of the city and experience clean air and wilderness.

A child's own view of focussing on entertainment doesn't help a younger mature into a high thinking caring member of his family or community. A successful kid is one who budgets time to help others. Thanks. All the best

My camp doesn’t allow you to bring junk food but they do let us have marshmallows and stuff. I think it’s just mostly to control how much sweets we eat, cuz they supply the candy or other junk food. Then they know your not sneaking candy everytime you go to your cabin. Idk if that makes sense?

i think it's good to have your phone taken away for summer camp (except travel day obviously) because you end up realizing how addicted you actually are, and you're forced to spend time talking to new people & forming better and deeper connections with them. If everyone had their phones it would be too distracting and not as engaging of an experience
