I have a lease situation with a 27 year old jumper. She came in hot, used to being an elite athlete and winning ribbons for being fast and driven. Her personality is very "chill" as far as she's not spooky or silly in any way, she's very safe, but she is NOT chill when it comes to her drive to work. If she were a person, she'd be a CEO with an office full of awards! 😁 It took a lot to convince her that she didn't have to run around like that anymore after her retirement from bigger things. It took a lot of patience. She was way more than I was used to after years of lesson horses, so we had to work together to learn a new language and get to know each other. I love her more than I can stand. We understand each other (I'm driven and high strung too!!!). What worked for me was taking my feet out of the stirrups and walking....she understood feet out of stirrups as "show's over." So that helped me to teach her a new language. I praised her so much when she walked, or when she trotted at a good, relaxed pace. I rewarded her with canters, like if she gave me a relaxed walk for one lap around the ring, I'd let her canter again. I changed gait in the center, rather than on the rail (she was always calm and relaxed in the center....where she got her ribbons I guess). I walked on the rail and picked up the canter at X. Anything to show here there were other ways of doing things. She's very smart and likes to learn new things, so once she stopped rushing she found some fun and reward in things like walking over ground poles, leg yields at the walk, etc. Now she has a relaxed walk, I can work on collecting her canter (still a work in progress), her trot departs are smooth and relaxed, and I can cool her off after our ride without even holding the reins. She would still rather run than walk, but she's learned to meet me halfway and give me what I want and I give her what she wants when it's her turn. It took a lot of getting into her very sharp and smart mind, but it was worth it. She's the best!

I have a PRE, highly sensitive. Change of bit made a fantastic difference. Love your tips, will take more time to "comfort" him when in new, more highly charged environment. Thank you Amelia.

I use the Hand On grooming gloves and go all over. Call loves the withers but adores/craves the grooming down her under midline. She will frequently reposition herself in summer letting me know she wants more THERE. Going over the whole body also ensures I catch any dings or places where she’s holding tension.
