Amazing choice of topic. I was actually on the trail the same year as you, hoping to complete a full thru. Resupply and logistics in general is one of the hardest parts of thru-hiking and contributed to the discouragement that caused me to end my hike early. One thing that helped me since was Gearskeptic’s spreadsheet that ranks 900 grocery offerings based on calories/oz. Your reminder about the abundance of hiker box canisters and the ability to refill single canister with a transfer valve has inspired me to not give up on the idea of carrying a stove. I was using alcohol the last time around which was not effective, and cold-soaking doesn’t sound great, either.

Skep's videos are absolutely fantastic. I enjoy ones that get into the details on products and that man lives in the weeds. I cold soaked my lunch for a few weeks but that got real old when I ran out of good options. I'll be using an alcohol stove on the Florida Trail this year. Evidently there is very little options for fuel canisters. I believe a fuel transfer gadget could keep someone from ever having to buy fuel on the AT. Every hiker box I saw had partial canisters in them. When did you start your thru hike?

so going on the mountian house meals idea, while i was homeless for a little over a year one thing i was taught by an old head was to buy one of those and transplant it into three smaller ziplocks, supplement with seasonings and maybe so sliced pieces of summer sausage and you have three meals worth off one purchase

Good video. I’ll never be a “thru hiker” but really enjoy your content. And look forward to a gear review, if you have that in mind.

Thank you for the tips. Be very careful using the fuel transfer device. At room temperature, canisters should be filled no more than about 80% full of liquid with 20% volume of gas at the top to allow for expansion. If a canister is filled with liquid with no "headspace," then an increase in temperature results in a large increase in pressure and can cause the canister to burst. If the released gas ignites, it's the bomb!

Dehydrate your own meals. Cheap. A pain, but worth it. I save about 50% weight.

Hey Greg! Enjoyed your thru hike videos! I'm hoping to thru hike the AT in 2024. I was wondering if you could purchase a Melly for me since you live in Colorado. Just need one hoodie the V2 in a XL, color: Terrapin. If it's not too much trouble. Thanks!

Not %100 but I'm sure that fuel transfer in a pressurized can doesn't work that way. Unless you have a pump, the two cans will just equal out. You need a pump system to force the total fuel from one can to another, otherwise the can with more pressure will empty in to the lesser can until the pressure equals out. So that device may just be a scam.

@raymondbond1468 I've used it about 50 times and it works perfectly. Highly recommend picking one up.
