Hi Chris, my puppy is 9 months old and I find myself returning to your videos! Your advise has been invaluable over the months and I am pleased to say my puppy retrieved is not too bad (I think!). My issue has been ENERGY. Other dog owners have told me my dog has ADHD because she is she full on. She gets 1 and 1/2 hours twice daily walks each day, which includes on lead country road training and footpath and across field off lead. This seems the only way to have her be calm in the house. She doesn't sleep much and is very attention seeking. I do 'find it' games and tug indoors because it's winter. I honestly think that the energy and brain stimulation trumps the keeping her limited. Welcome your thoughts x

I have a black labrador...worked all his life from 2 and a half years until last year when I retired him at 12. This year is his 13th birthday! One of the exercises I have found most crucial is leave. On shoots there's so many dangerous situations, unless your lucky enough not to have a drive near a road...pardon the pun😂! I was a biomedical scientist, but now a dog behavioural trainer specialising in Gundogs. I love the advice and agree! I have a handout on "don't treat your puppy like a human, or baby". And too many people allow their dogs to attention seek, making it harder to train their dogs. Why would a dog listen to you if you give him attention on demand. So I like your advice on quality time, rather than too much time spent with the puppy, and treating him like a human. If you prevent the practicing of bad behaviours, these will be less likely to develop! And yes...ontology requires we start retrieving as early as possible, making it a positive exciting experience. The later it gets, the more likely you are to miss out on that critical time when puppies exhibit the innate job they were bred to do...so capitalise on it! Woking is near me! So when I can find my next working pup, it would be great to have my puppy in lessons, learning to work whist ignoring other dogs. It's fine to say hello, but I generally don't encourage play, as I want my dog more focused on me than anyone else, dogs or humans. So in general, I don't allow people to pet or treat my dog...well never actually 🤣! He's got to be obsessed with me! So yes he's comfortable and friendly towards all dogs and people, but I provide good socialisation, not out of control socialisation. He's just the perfect dog...i can't imagine life going forward finding a new dog. Could you guide me in the right direction for a reputable breeder at all? Your advice resonated with me very much! And I'm just finding it so very hard to find a good gundog breeder. I would obviously love a labrador. But am open to another breed for picking up. Thank you so much for your video...great to know your in my area, and I have someone to refer people too!

Hi Chris I've trialled labs and springers over the last 20 yrs and now I have a 9 week old cocker. He is a real live wire. Please can you advise the amount of time you have out of cage or kennel and how do you keep them occupied when in crate mine just never seems to settle apart from after feeding. Would be good if you could advise a regime on daily basis up to say 16weeks old that's time in and out of cage and any stimulation whilst in crate or kennel. Thanks

This would have been great to have watched a year ago 😂 I gave her too much freedom and now its frustrating to try and get her to recall or follow simple commands anymore.

Hi pal. Great video. I am thinking about taking on a spaniel pup as the owner can't handle it. He is around 20 weeks and has way to much freedom he has been left to do his own thing so chewing everything peeing in the crate etc do you think all that could be reversed or has the crucial part of training been messed up and caused lasting problems? Thank you

You mention toys-are you saying it's bad to use toys as your retrieve or that toys are bad in general when they are really young?
@hampshirespanieltrainingwi9314
@hampshirespanieltrainingwi9314 Жыл бұрын
Basically if you let the dog have a toy to play with when he then come to retrieve the dog will often think it's playtime and start interacting and playing with the retrieve based off its experience of being allowed to sit and have a toy therefore inhibiting your retrieve, so I really a boy toys as it generally has a negative effect on your retrieve👍

How much time do you think a 10 week old working cocker pup should be spending in their crate? Will be watching more of your content as it just seems to make sense 👌 Followed on Facebook insta and on here too now 👍
