This video shows five different wild edibles you can still find in the winter. These wild edible plants could help in a survival situation or to supplement what food you already have. Some of them are also sources of things like vitamin C which can help the immune system.
Curly Dock - Rumex crispus
Staghorn Sumac - Rhus typhina
Ponderosa Pine - Pinus ponderosa
Douglas Fir - Pseudotsuga menziesii
Rocky Mountain Juniper - Juniperus scopulorum
Western Mountain Ash - Sorbus scopulina
Juniper berries stimulate urination, sweating, and mucous secretion. Juniper is said to have anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce pain related to arthritis, rheumatic conditions, and sore muscles and joints. Juniper can also stimulate urination to help flush out deposits that build up in cold joints and limbs.
For colds the berry tea can help heal the lungs because it is an expectorant. Juniper berries are also considered a blood purifier and overall system cleanser.
Juniper can irritate the urinary tract and kidneys if used long term. Also it could result in convulsions and irritation to the digestive tract. People with kidney problems and pregnant women should avoid juniper.
Please consume wild plants at your own risk! Consult multiple reliable sources before consuming any wild plants! This video is for information and entertainment only!

I had been wondering if mountain ash is edible. Now I know it is, but not tasty! Another question: does staghorn grow along the roadside in Kelowna?

Yes, it wouldn't be my first choice for a snack, haha! Yes, I have found staghorn sumac quite a bit in the area. Thank you!

You're welcome! Thank you, too! Is it the curly dock seeds? Really the answer would depend on a lot of factors. If the seeds got wet and moldy, I would think they aren't safe. If they still appear to be clean and free of pollutants, mold, etc., I think they could be fine. Generally I think if a plant looks healthy, it's more likely to be OK, and you always have to be mindful of where it's growing, if it's been sprayed with anything, if the soil is polluted, and more. It's kind of a complicated topic I think. I hope that helps!
