I think I have it growing in my garden lots of it and that awful spotted surge is growing al l around it....But the flowers are more a hot pink Not orange, purple or yellow....Picture this app says it's common purslane so I just want to make sure..I can't seem to find anyone talking about any with a very tiny hot pink flower

I found the taste very light with a ever so subtle, peppery note; not bad at all! After washing it, it looked like something I could have purchased at the market. Wow...all this nutrition right in our back yard!

Ah, finally! A video which clearly identifies purslane compared to spurge. Thank you. Now I'm sure what I thought was edible purslane growing in my yard is really spurge. I'm so glad I ran across this video before I let my curiosity overrule my common sense and tried tasting the plant in my yard. You may have saved me a lot of pain. Thank you.

Steam it, add a dash of salt and malt vinegar and you can't go far wrong, It is much better before it flowers as the seed pods can make it somewhat gritty. It is good in soup as well. It would be a good companion for ham as the abundant Omega 3 in purslane will cancel out the bad omega 6 in the pork. It grows all over the place here at my compound in Central Texas. What a blessing and wonderful ally this plant is!

In Mexico it is commonly cooked in Chile Verde with pork, adding it the last 5 to 10 minutes as it easily dissolves to almost nothing when overcooked as the plant has a high water content. It is truly delicious!

@@marives8 hello, I can't pinpoint any specific medical condition purslane cured in my case but it is the richest source of omega 3 ,richer than all those widely listed or commercially sold, the effect is cumulative & results in overall improved welness ,it is a powerful antioxidant and contains a myriad of vitamins ,oligo elements & minerals..Purslane is not generally spoken about by health practitioners as it is so common & grows wild just about everywhere therefore eliminating all commercial value to those developing and selling health supplements...same goes for quite a few marvellous plants that are so good for us but rarely mentioned by the industry You can find all details of purslane nutritional value & health benefits on line..you can grow it it yourself if you have a garden..it is a ground growing plant that likes to extend itself which means that growing in pots is not ideal even though it is possible..it grows very fast & is considered a very invasive weed by those gardeneners who ignore all its virtues . I hope some of what I shared was helpful. Have a blessed day.

The folks I share with want the essential facts presented within about 5-10 minutes, then they want to get on with their day. Other than that, great information, glad you explained how to distinguish purslane from spurge. Thank you. I bought a hanging plant the other day. One limb broke off in transit, I put it in a jar of plain water and the next week it had roots. I will plant that in a antique green wheelbarrow I can move around during the year, and envision it overflowing with gorgeous flowers all summer, and coming back year after year. The flowers of mine are over an inch across, bright fuchsia with yellow centers.

So i think I'll try it with our mung bean and squash soup with string beans and ground beef.

@@EvolutionWendy well, it is kinda agressive, but pretty, and it is like grass anyway, got used to it. In vegetable patches, it isn't the only weed, so if it grows like in potatoes, don't really care. It flower beds, yea, weed it out and make salad. Was surprised when found out it is edible, but it is good. And a very durable plant that can be very decorative. Maybe there are some varieties that dont spread so much. Still would't reccomend to plant it deliberately)

@@lourencocoutinho1233 Hi.Sorry I just rechecked this site. The plant has little, quite attractive flowers, that bloom starting in the morning until the sun is too much. Where it blooms you can see the tiny, REALLY tiny black seeds as the dried blooms blow away. The seeds normally fall and blow all over to reproduce itself. I pick off the tiny dried bloom heads, and put them in a container till they are dry, then shake them in a wire strainer from the dollar store, The seeds will drop through the strainer into or on a plate, and the rubbish left i tear up and shake it again to get the last seeds. You can save them or plant immediately. It's worth the effort.

My purslane is sour and grassy tasting… I usually just eat three or four leaves a day in the garden … just heard it’s a good poultice for inflammation… going to be adding minerals to my soil so hopefully that will help the taste… it’s not horrible, but it doesn’t scream ‘add me to a salad’ … although I will be experimenting with it more… it’s the most effortless thing in my garden, next to a mini basil plant (either Greek or piccolino) now that’s an easy plant, but it does not proliferate like purslane. Thanks for all your effort. Much appreciation.

We make this exactly like making capers (apple vinegar, salt, lemon juice, pinch of sugar, garlic) and we use it in salads. Yummy 😋

In the philippines, purslane is loved for salad. How can we propagate it?

it readily self seeds here and it considered a 'weed'. If you let it go to seed you'll have more next year. You can purchase seeds online as well. If you find some live purslane you can also take a cutting and put it in water. It will start to root within a week and you can replant the rooted cuttings so you will have perpetual purslane! :-)

I cooked purslane sauteed with garlic, tomato and onion in olive oil. the adult stems I replanted it in my mini garden and now it's beginning to show some flowers. The purslane wine is interesting

I don't normally watch this type of video but liked this one. I didn't come to learn about purslane for MY consumption, but I will try some now. -- I live in the desert, just south of Phoenix, and am building an "oasis" and wildlife sanctuary on eleven acres. In more natural desert, after we've had rains and the land is drying up, there comes a point when only purslane is growing. Yet the wild animals won't touch it. Rabbits, ground squirrels, desert iguana and tortoises ignore the stuff. Yet it's edible to humans. I'm certain this is not spurge. Yes I know it's bad to eat ONLY purslane, but the animals aren't eating it even when there is variety. -- I realize you're not a botanist (or maybe you are) but I'm seeking someone who can explain this.

Good luck with your food forest, that is a dream of mine. It seems the hotter and dryer the climate, the better purslane grows. We had no rain this summer and temps in the triple digits for month and this stuff was growing into what looked like shrubs, amazing stuff!

@@conspiracycorner9610 Thank you. I didn't mention "food forest" but that is exactly what I'm trying to do. I think Geoff Lawson coined the term "food forest" and I've followed his videos as well as annoy the Arizona State University with more questions than typical people ask. They and U of A do a lot of research on how to make this desert Grow. I've even gotten some of them interested in tracking what works in Morocco, particularly trying Argan trees.

@El Eleven I have a 50,000-gallon water tank (bigger than some small towns have) I try to keep full from any rain. Then I try to keep the rest of the rain in my ponds to soak in. I have many 10-foot-deep holes to help the water get deeper. Then my trees can suck that up for well over a year.

Well I must try it since I have it growing in my gravel driveway. Now I have seen your video I will certainly try eating it. I suppose now I've discovered some use for this plant, there would most likely be far less amounts in my driveway.

Hi David, I followed a Parsley Wine recipe from a small spiral bound wine book called Mary's Recipes. I used purslane instead of the parsley and added a few other lemony herbs as the recipe called for some lemons and oranges as well.

It can be planted from seeds or from cuttings. Just root the fresh cuttings in water for about a week until the roots start to grow and then plant!

OK, I. have milky sapped spurge growing from a crack in the driveway and purslane growing in a flower bed and in a flower pot. Almost pulled the purslane up this morning, because I planted some other flower in that spot and the purslane seemed to be crowding it out. All's well that end's well. Thank you. :)

I love purselane. I make a good pickle out of the thick stems. I pack a small jar of just the stems. I put in some pickle spice or a Serrano pepper. I pour boiling vinegar to fill the jar and cap. I let cool and put in fridge. I also add the seed pods of malva neglecta

Thank you for the 'recipe'. I had to look up malva neglecta. It seems to be common mallow. Out of curiosity, why do you add those seed pods to this recipe? I have never used them so I am wondering. I love learning!
