I'm no tape expert, but after playing with broken tape players throughout the years I've come to the conclusion that replacement belts for any tape deck should always be the same if not as close to original as possible. That means getting the exact diameter (not too tight nor too loose), the exact widthness (so it doesn't fall off its path) , and the exact type (square, round or flat). Trust be, if you try to use anything different from what was originally on the deck you'll get varying types of shit results. For anyone who's just starting I recommend getting some of those bags wich include many belts of different sizes.

Definitely wouldnt use this as a permanent solution, but if you have a Walkman lying around which doesnt work, at least you can use this method to test it! Hope you enjoyed!

I put some regular rubber bands into a tape deck recently, because it's what i had on hand, and i knew i would have to order proper parts later. The bands generated a ton of flutter (the weird warbly sound)... even worse, after letting it sit over a few days, the bands took the shape they were in, and made it even worse. The wrong elastic tension also puts extra strain on the 30/40 year old motors in the things. It does more harm than good. my experience anyway...

Thank you! I was able to fix my ancient Walkman for my daughter to use (she loves analog equipment). I searched on eBay for the correct band for that model #, got it, and it worked perfectly. To the people complaining -- be a little resourceful and you can find the exact band size. Again much thanks!

I’m getting one soon! Mines a WM-F46 that I ordered, a 1983 model. Has AM/FM radio, tape player and recording feature. I am convinced it has everything I could need! Wish me luck and hope I’m satisfied :D cool video man keep it up, I subbed! PS. I would be terrified opening up a Walkman. I would fear that I wouldn’t get everything back how it was or I would break it even more. My father helped me open up my 1985 NES to replace the motherboard and even that was scary to me when that is MUCH simpler than this process you are doing. The motherboard comes right out in one piece, I am replacing the entire thing and keeping the NES console I originally had. Great job man, this is hard work ^

just unboxed my WM-3 Metal that I had stored away. I bought it in 1981 in England while stationed at RAF Alconbury. My favorite tapes at the time were Supertramp Breakfast in America, and Rush. I would walk around base at night to escape the world and my drama at the time. Great memories. I have the original WM-3 and the original headphones, but am unsure what happened to the battery pack. When I put batteries in I can hear the motor and slight hiss in the headphones, but no action on the spindles that turned the tape. Hoping to find new belts. Thank you your video was helpful to understand what I need to do!

I;ve used rubber bands on an 8 track player in the past, while it works, you don't get the same speed stability as you would with proper belts. Rubber bands are too elastic to provide a constant speed and low wow and flutter. Also, a drop of watchmaker oil on the bearings will greatly improve it's lifespan!

£2 to fix? My WM-EX180 only cost £2.50 in a charity shop! After many years the belt turned to black goo, so I replaced it with a blue rubber band from a bunch of spring onions, with similar (unacceptable) results to yours. From your experience, I wouldn't have much confidence in buying belts from abroad as they seem to be of variable quality.

Rubber bands are too stretchy and can cause warble in the sound and they also degrade faster. Even if you do get one with the correct size, it may not last long . The better option is to get the replacement belt.

sorry but that is only a temporary solution - not a good idea for permanent fix especially for a more valuable player for a bunch of obvious reasons. 1. ban exerts higher off axial torque on all spindles, rubber band will add wow/flutter, rubber could be too thick and touches case or other items in small walkmans. just a bad idea IMO
