Back in the late 80's I used to repair Walkmans at Radio Shack. The moto was "When in doubt, belt it out" because 99.5% of the time, the issue was a broken/warped drive belt.

The grinding noise or rubbing noise while playing or rewinding is usually caused by the supply and take up reel hub gears. That model has two large thin gears behind each reel/hub that are each attached to metal center disks. Very similar to the Sony WM-DD models with the disk drive center gear hub. They can crack due to plastic shrinkage over the past 40 years. The metal disk that holds them doesn't shrink so the gears split. You can repair them with a lot of patience and effort with filler epoxy and some fine sculpting abilities to reform the very small missing gear teeth. Or find a donor gear section to put in the split. The case is thin aluminum which can be reformed with the proper tools.

i found a wm-20 at a thrift for a dollar, it was thrown in with all the cassettes (since it blends in so well due to size) still need to replace the belt and clean some battery corrosion, fingers crossed that it still works!

The smallest Sony Walkman is the WM-102 but as of right now the smallest portable cassette player is the Sanyo JJ-P4.

You should be able to fix the dents pretty easily. They’re shallow, so a hammer and dolly will take care of them without messing up the paint too badly.

Hi Elliot, I have two of them Sony’s still in the box the WM 10 and the one you have there the difference really is one’s red and ones blue. They are both the same size and both come in the same box. The blue one came from Japan red one comes from the United States

It's STILL the smallest in it's collapsed state that fully contains a tape when expanded. If you only compare the expanded state, there are MANY others that are smaller. Also, this doesn't include units that don't fully contain the tape while being played. It still holds the reputation as world's smallest but once you start applying different criteria, it's not technically true depending.
