We fix the scale used in our home lab which needed calibration due to an OUR2 (out of range) error. After calibration, Our Cen-Tech digital pocket scale works. With this fixed, we can move on to measuring the mass of some objects so we can determine their density for an upcoming experiment.

I didn't have a calibration weighr either, but I did have a good food scale. I used a coule of small heavy items from the pantry including a salt shaker. Adjusted the amount of salt until my collection weighed 500g. Placed them on the pocket scale and it worked like a charm.

Thanks for the answer. I made my 500g weight by using my less precise kitchen scale to prepare 500g by pouring water into a glass (2 cups is around 480g). Perhaps not totally accurate, but got the scale going and now I can use the higher precision of the scale for things that weigh between 1-3 grams. My kitchen scale is only accurate to 1g.

Thank you very much for this video and your answer to my comment that were both absolutely helpful! When I got my scale, instructions said I should calibrate it, and you certainly don't want to wait another week for a calibration tool to be delivered, nor spend more money, specially when the solution is at home, thanks to your suggestion. I have hundreds of coins from everywhere left by my father, and there were the nickels that dated from the 50's until over the year 2000 so found the right ones to work with and got my exact 100 grams. Without this tip I would have been lost; very helpful!

Ok guys. I spent a good hour looking up weights of things I possess. Its much simpler than that. I took an empty glass and set it on the scale when it flashes 500. Then add water until it says pass. Tare and set your .5 nickle on. It'll be off so redo the CAL process and add more water if it says the Nickle is heavier than .5, less if it is lighter than .5. Repeat until the scale reads .5 with nickle.

If you have a way to accurately measure 500ml of water that's also 500g which would make the water process for calibration faster.

@@askquestionstrythings i looked into that but the glass weighs a significant about and I couldn't determine what it was without a scale. I suppose if one had a red solo cup that weighed practically nothing it would be much easier with the water

If your scale is anything else than a kitchen scale you really need a calibration weight anyway. Especially on such "precision" scales. With time they'll go out of calibration and it may even depend on temperature, battery level and even lattitude as well because of earths rotation. Coins is not a good option for anything else than kitchen scales. Use coins for calibrating and you can't count on the decimals being correct. A far better option is a cheap calibration weight. Amazon, eBay, AliExpress, Banggood etc.

Puzzle?, just bought a small RoHS digital scale and comes with a 50 gram weight, i calibrated it with that weight then when i put an Australian 20 cent piece which weighs 5.65 grams it literally shows double the weight, and i had a cheaper scale that did the exact same thing, and here i was thinking a gold nugget that i found gold detecting weighed 2 grams when in fact only weighs 1 gram bugger!!!, do you have any idea why this is happening, it doesn't bloody make any sense, if it's calibrated to the 50gram weight then why would anything else that you put on the scale shows double?
@Jonathan-jo2xu
@Jonathan-jo2xu Ай бұрын
What kills me about this scale is that it requires you to put 500 G on it and it won't clear until it has 500 G on it, which means it knows when 500 G is on it, which means all it's doing is confirming your weight is accurate! In other words it should have just been able to zero itself out without the weight since it already knows when 500 G is there. Am I missing something? Now somebody else just had a great idea and I'm about to try which is too turn it on put it empty container on it and fill it up until it says pass. I may update afterwards in the past I used my kitchen scale found 500 G and then placed it on there. I also had saved a bunch of metal brackets and screws that equaled 500 G exactly which I used as my weight for some time but I forgot that's what it was and used it for parts🥴

If there is no calibration weight hanging around 500 grams =17.73 oz or 1.102 in pounds! So, if you got a pound of butter or something else, it will get you in the ball park range! You can tweak & adjust with other items. Well, until you can get some weights if you choose! 😊

If calibration with the correct mass doesn't work it's possible the scale has been damaged beyond recalibration (things like dropped, or a large mass well beyond the scales rating was placed on it, etc). In those cases the internal workings of the scale might have been damaged and not repairable. Being stuck a Zero and not moving suggests the internal workings may be damaged.

Hi Where did you get this scale from? I need a very accurate scale to weigh powder medicine so I’ll need the mg scale
@askquestionstrythings
@askquestionstrythings 5 жыл бұрын
This scale is sold by harbor freight in the US. But it's not acceptable or accurate enough for chemistry or medicine purposes and doesn't do mg 0.0010 scale. It's also not repeatable enough with measurements to qualify for business or trade applications. I would consider this scale less accurate than a kitchen scale, but acceptable for some home lab physics experiments. There are scales which would have the high accuracy needed for powered medicines but you would need to go through something like a medical supply company or a scientific instrument distributor. Definitely stick to scales with an enclosure to keep air current variations out of the measurement.

In some cases if there is damage to the mechanical portions of a scale the scale's electronics will say it's a "pass" but will not be able to recalibrate the scale due to the damage. Usually I follow a rule of three, if three recalibrations fail then measurement tool needs repair or replace.

You will need to look at your scale's manual. In many cases all you need to do is remove and replace the battery, hold both the power button and off button at the same time until the screen comes on, then calibrate with the mass the scale needs for recalibration.

What ever the reading is when in calibrate mode is what you have to use according to the instructions. The instructions aren't as clear as they could have been but this scale uses one or the other but not both. Mine is the PS500 item #93543 and out of the package it gave the OUTZ message, fortunately I had enough calibration standards to get the 500 grams needed. By the way OUTZ means the scale thinks something was sitting on the platform when it was turned on.

At a minimum, You would need 100 USA nickels (5g each *100 = 500g) or if your model takes a different calibration mass (100g, 250g, etc) you would need the appropriate number of nickels for the scale's requirements.

Not many people have a 5000gram reference weight at their disposal so, this is what I did. Use a light weight coffee cup as the 5000gram calibration. This will remove the (OUR2) error. Then get a (new) nickel and weight it. The nickel should be ~5grams. Repeat the calibration process, adding water to coffee cup, until you are satisfied with accuracy. The main point here is to get the error cleared without the hassle of finding a 5000gram reference weight. Please like this post if it works for you 【ツ】.

Hey dude just thought I'd let u and anyone here who doesn't know or think about this much. Nickels are made out of two different material s. The older nickels always weight 5g but some of these newer nickels are being made with a different material so they don't always weigh 5g. But here's something else as far as money to check ur scale, u can always use a bill one bill weighs 5g. And lol it doesn't matter if it's a $5 biil or a $10 dollar bill they will weigh the same. Lmao 😂 . A buddy of mine one time asked me if I had a dollar bill, and I knew he had like a few 5s and a 10. So I asked him why does he need a dollar bill to check his scale, and he replied a one dollar will be the right weight. LMAO 🤣 I just started laughing so hard it took me a while to stop laughing. And I told him it doesn't matter how much the bill is for they weight the same. He was stoned to but still it was hilarious 😂 that was like four years ago but to this day I can think about that and it makes me laugh. I mentioned "new" because coins in circulation could have nicks and could be under the specified mass from the US mint. If the coins are newer than 2000 they should close. (I think it's US nickels since 1965) Check your country's coin mint they may have a coin with a mass at a common number like US nickels. "Newer" US pennies are 2.5g according to the US mint. The other option is to get a calibration weight from Amazon, they are reasonably priced for most masses and basic sets.

Some versions of this scale use a 100g or 200g mass and not 500g like my scale. Make sure you are using the correct mass for your scale's setting. when "CAL" is blinking and gives you a number, that is the calibration mass needed for your specific scale. My Scale said 500.0 so I needed a 500g mass. If calibration with the correct mass doesn't work it's possible the scale has been damaged beyond recalibration (things like dropped, or a large mass well beyond the scales rating was placed on it, etc). In those cases the internal workings of the scale might have been damaged and not repairable.

It records 22 beads instead of 25 and then when I press PCS again as directed, I get an error message. Help? Please? Thanks.
@askquestionstrythings
@askquestionstrythings 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know much about this specific scale. Most scales with a counting function have specific steps for calibration of the counting of the PCS function. I'm going to differ to this video, which is likely very similar to your model, for the process. About halfway through the video he covers the PCS function and mentions some details about the set up with the tray. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jobKd4CYn8uios0 I'll also mention from personal experience, some jewelry beads can be inconsistent with their mass from bead to bead making it harder to use the PCS function for small lots. You will need to know your beads and how consistent their mass is to know if mass inconsistencies are an issue you face with your beads. Best of luck with sorting out your PCS scale issues.

Calibration is a specialized process, it's not just weighing a calibration weight. The Calibration process is used to correct what the scale is measuring. Once a scale is in the correct mode for calibration you are giving it a reference point to check against. Once the scale "learns" what the "reference" is, it should be able to correctly measure things again. I hope that makes sense.

@askquestionstrythings
@askquestionstrythings 3 жыл бұрын
@@maitesantos7817 some versions of this scale use a 100g or 200g mass and not 500g like my scale. Make sure you are using the correct mass for your scale's setting. when "CAL" is blinking and gives you a number, that is the calibration mass needed for your specific scale. My Scale said 500.0 so I needed a 500g mass. If that correction doesn't work it's possible the scale has been damaged beyond recalibration (things like dropped, or a large mass well beyond the scales rating was placed on it, etc).

Why have music playing while trying to give instructions
@askquestionstrythings
@askquestionstrythings 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. Background music in an instructional video in some cases can be an enhancement to the learning experience or can add a level of professionalism. In other cases background music can be a distraction for people. I'm not an audio engineer so I probably missed the mark on the Background music use and volume level. We'll keep working on refining our presentation. Thanks for watching.

Recalibrating is not fixing !
@askquestionstrythings
@askquestionstrythings 4 жыл бұрын
That's unfortunate. In some cases if the scale has had something placed on it which far exceeds its rated capacity it can become damaged internally and recalibrating can't fix it. Other general maintenance things like replacing the batteries then recalibrating can fix it, as long as it is not damaged internally.

@@askquestionstrythings what if my digital scale says full
@askquestionstrythings
@askquestionstrythings 4 жыл бұрын
@@russellbussey1418 There is nothing in the manual to indicate a meaning for "full"; although it's possible that it's actually saying "fail" and it wants you to reattempt calibration. If that was the case, either there is something wrong with the scale or the calibration weight used for the scale isn't what the scale wants. Some of these models want 200g and others want 500g.

There are something which you can do to recalibrate if you don't have the right mass. As mentioned at the end of the video newer USA nickels have a mass of 5g. Good enough for hobby lab use but not accurate enough for other things. Even this scale isn't accurate enough for some things in hobby lab use, and definitely not for any type of transaction. Eventually, I will need to get a better scale with higher accuracy for future projects in the Lab.

At the End of the Video I mention that US Nickels are 5g and you can use 100 of them as a substitute. Otherwise you can find calibration weight sets on Amazon for $14 which include 500g. Thanks for Watching.

Why is everyone saying this is a good video?. I'm not trying to be a jerk but practically everything you said and did in this video is incorrect. First of all, scales measure weight. Not mass. Balances measure mass. Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object. Scales measure weight, which is the force acting on a mass that is equal to the object’s mass times its acceleration due to gravity. Althought weight is typically reported in mass units such as kilogram or gram, a scale can’t measure mass directly, because the weighing mechanism and the weight of any given object are dependent on local gravity. Also, all U.S. nickels minted since the mid 1960s weigh exactly 5.000 grams. The candy cane example was also completely incorrect. As long as the entire mass of the object is supported by the scale it will weigh the same regardless of the orientation (assuming it is a solid object). Yours weighed differently because part of the candy cane was resting on the calculator and the table surface. I'm not trying to insult you but exact measurements and weights are important in various tasks and inaccurate information like this spreads and causes problems. That's what's wrong with your catch phrase or slogan "go try stuff". Perhaps you should learn how to do things the right way before you try them and certainly before you presume to teach others.

Specs of coins are not as tight as many think. Besides new og being in circulation really does matter. Use your pennies and buy a real calibration weight instead. Even the cheap calibration weights off eBay, Banggood, AliExpress etc. Yes even on Amazon you can get cheap calibration weights - all of them despite being very cheap and most only fullfills M2 and some even only M3 classification - none the less they'll be much more accurate than a bunch of coins.
