Folks like this is why KZbin can be a good place. Something very specific, but done in an easy-to-understand manner, thank you sir! You were right about it being a not so easy job, if I weren't cheap, I would have certainly found someone else to do it. (those plastic clips that hold the bottom pane are horribly designed by the way, it is like they were designed to snap in half and cause issues)

I wish you had mentioned how you kept the top pane from sliding down. I’m old but I curl 40 lbs., but cannot keep the pane up and get the ends of the roller inserted. Also, the orange end piece (handle end) fell out a😊nd I’m not clear where it goes or what it does. This company's engineering looks like Boeing's.

Great tutorial and instructions. I replaced my screen that had ripped at the rubber piece. I have an older Larson door that had the metal screen roller holders. I used the new plastic ones that came in the replacement kit. Other than that little variation, everything went smoothly. Thanks for the clear and concise how to video. Keep up the great work!

This video was more helpful then the paper instructions. Some notes. Do not pry side clips up from bottom sash by flat piece. Use the screw holes. This way they do not break. Also the new screen bottom slide plastic had to be trimmed at corners to fit.

Just watched the video twice and felt comfortable enough to take on replacing the retractable screen in my Larson storm door. I never even looked at the instructions that came with the replacement screen. Instructions and explanation was perfect! This is why I love KZbin! I can’t thank you enough! One minor point, if the screen has lost tension, after removing the bottom window there isn’t anything to stop it except my thumb. Just be careful bringing that top window down, mine was pretty heavy.

As mentioned in the video, those first two clips were the hardest, and knowing that they were hard to begin with was a great help. And after 3.5 hours of dealing with those clips, DEFINITELY ok to swear at them :) I had one job where the tops of those clips broke off and the clip fell down into the window frame. Couldn't remov ethe bottom window. Lot's of swearing then :( Glad that did NOT happen to you!

Excellent instructions. Easy to follow. The only time I had someone help was when I was reinstalling the top window and that was simply because I wasn't sure about handling both the window weight and reinstalling the torsion mechanism (having a third hand made me more comfortable). Thank you thank you thankyou. And BTW, using only the paper instructions from Larson would have made this job much more difficult for DIY.

I watched both Larson and your video. By far you explained in easy detail how to replace the screen properly One thing you were right about, they lie when they say easy and simple. 15 minutes took almost an hour, getting the windows out and in took the longest because the channels aren’t square and I had to find the sweet spot to slide them in or out. Definitely have two people when you put the top window back in- the hinge clip fell out three times, should design that one to lock into place. I give the video a 5 star rating

Had to stop by and say how helpful this was. Until your video I did not know how to replace the one in my door, I had just looked up and noticed the two screws holding the tension plate. I was going to remove them and take a look, however something said look and see how its done first! lol.. Good thing I did :)

Fantastic! I'm very good mechanically, do the brakes on my cars, fix all the snowblowers and lawnmowers in the neighborhood, fix generators, restored a vintage motorcycle but I was having a terrible time trying to fix/replace the screen on my Larson storm door. The pictures on the instructions they send you are very low quality B&W images making it impossible to see detail of the black plastic parts that go on the ends of the screen. Watched your video a few times and was able to install the replacement screen with a extra set of hands from a very patient friend. Thank you very much for making this video!

Tried replacing a starter on an old van once. 3 bolts and 2 wires, how hard could it be? 6 hours later I hobbled it down to my mechanic and paid him $600 to fix what I did. Got it back and my wife said, "why did you try to fix the van? Just install another storm door and pay someone else to do what they know how to do." I said, "Hon ... I can't argue with logic like that!"

Thanks Mr Storm Door Guy - you were spot on when you started off with really how hard this process is.. My wife and I worked on it together and found out that our door was a Pella manufactured by Larson but basically the same thing..almost.. What we find was the two stop screws that hold the window in place and the window sash tabs were all we needed to take off to get the window out of the door, no other inserts. The next piece was somewhat painful, the black spacers that you showed to reinsert the screen, were not even used on the Pella model. Eventually we figured that out, that was the painful part..but we were able to just slide the left side and right side in place then put it back together...couldn't have done this without your help so that you very much..🙂

Getting the inner sash glass was the hardest by far - our has been installed for at least 20 years and it not the same end point hardware as it had a metal pin on the inner right side of cartridge. Ours has a bog old metal flashing that holds everything in solid top and bottom after the plastic shims - a beast to get the glass out!

Thanks for the video. It was a huge help. It took me about an hour, but I worked by myself, spent quite a bit of time re-watching the video, and also cleaned the old door and window frames during the process. My biggest trouble was getting out the lower sash. I found that if I lifted the lower sash up about 10-16 inches, then it would rock out. Btw, when re-installing the upper sash, I did use a couple of small one-hand Irwin bar clamps to make sure it didn't slide down. Maybe I didn't need this, but it made me feel better.

Excellent video, followed it step by step and was able to replace the screen in no time. Was a little hesitant at first but following it step by step a game changer, don't think that I could have done it without this video. I only had one hiccup, when I went to but the spacers back into the outside window it went behind where it clicks into and up into the frame. I managed to take a wooden skewer and slip it behind the window and the frame from inside and push it back down.

Great video, very informative. I could not have installed the screen based on the Larson instructions alone. As others mentioned, the plastic wedges that hold the lower sash broke off. I had to drill, scrape, and pry these out. Pathetic design by Larson. It was very difficult to hold the upper window with the screen and insert the screen into the top of the door. Seeing the video make it possible, but it is a definitely a 2-person job for this part. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for your instructions! I think I can tackle this now. My screen is intact, and still attached to the bottom channel. Neither of the sides are attached after a strong wind. I thought there would be a channel on the sides as well, but your video showed otherwise. Do I need a new screen, or can I get these back in the sides somehow?

You should be able to just push the sides back into their channels with your fingers. They should slide back in. Using a carpenters pencil can help too, you just dont want to use anything sharp an run the risk of damaging the screen. Good Luck!

Thank you, Storm Door Guy., I have had my replacement screen sitting in the corner collecting dust for almost 2 years now. Shortly after my tradewinds door was installed, the screen blew out. I went to the store I ordered my door from, they installed it, and told them what had happened. The salesman called Pella and talked to them about it. The service person at Pella, unaware that she was on speaker told the salesman that is was not a warranty issue because the window should not be down with the screen exposed when the wind is blowing. The day the screen blew out there was a nice breeze, not some big wind. Bot

A great help! Our screen failed on a hot day in the summer - I think thermal expansion of the aluminum allowed the left side tension "keeper" to release. Reassembled with no new parts and a small shim under the left tension "keeper" and re tensioned per MFG instructions. Next summer will tell.

@@stormdoorguy Since we replaced it, the screen came out of the track on the right side. I contacted Larson support and they were garbage. We went back and forth and she told me the screen was in when I showed her I could stick my finger between the track and the screen. I used a video she sent to try to reset it, but that didn't work. She refused to give me a refund for this shotty product. Do I have any other options?

your vider was fantastic, I feel kind of cheap since it almost feels like you installed the screen for us. We were sweating bulits expecting for us to set off the spring any minut. the first one popped about the 5th time my wife pulled down the glass the day we installed the door. I watched it happen, and she was doing nothing unusual. Actually, she was pulling it down too slowly if anything. I hope this one lasts longer than a few hours. THANKS again.

Great video, but how would you go about re-tensioning the screen if it wasn’t tensioned ?

Theyre not designed to be retensioned once the spring looses tension. Theyre pretensioned from the factory s oI would order another one. That said, it may be possible if you use a locakjaw. Clamp it onto the end that has a metal hape ‘L’ on it. Then turn that metal ‘L’ clockwise to retension the screen. Be very careful, it builds up a lot of power like a garage door spring. If the lock jaw slips off or you lose your grip, you can get injured. Good luck.

You say it's a boldface lie that it's an easy swap...but you sure do make it look easy! That's skill and the right tools for ya! You at least gave me hope I don't need to replace my whole door! Next to look up parts and if I fail I can always call in a screen repair person 😂 But I think I should be able to handle it!

Thank you so much! We did it! Totally would not have been able to do it without your video. The instructions sent with the part kit was a photocopy of a bad photo copy so i couldn't see anything they had pictures of 😂 But we used your video rewound it about 80 thousand times and got it done in a short hour and a half😂 but at least we did it and saved us a ton of money I'm sure! Which is such a blessing right now! The only real trouble we ran into was trying to get the last clip in. But like 20 minutes later I figured out just to pop out the first clip and to put them both in but not to completely snap them into place until they are both in place then is was super easy 10/10 would do again. 2nd time would be so much faster!

Great video. Well done. I agree absolutely with tireguy about the instructions recieved regarding some of the quality of the photo's regarding the black parts. The instructions coming with the unit aren't bad, but the video makes some aspects much easier to understand and especially related to the amount of pressure necessary for some component removal. It would have also been helpful if the written instructions had explained the yellow piece that came, but reading further into the instructions I figured that out. Being yellow didn't really mean anything. A couple of addtional things that home installers may come across. Dan is right on several items. Getting the outside clips to come apart took enough effort that I thought the door would break, but after some manipulation and very, very firm downward pressure they released and came out. Both the lower and upper window took a fair amount of manipulation and cautious pressure to get out from the frames. Again, just when I thought any more pressure to overcome the resistance would break the window they released. Care must be used, and is emphasized in the written instructions, regarding not damaging the screen as the upper window with new screen attached is installed. I had a helper for that part and that was very useful, especially for a first replacement. We used the parts that came with the screen, but the upper left black plastic slotted receiver which replaced the original metal slotted receiver where the slotted end of the screen roll is to be inserted caused the screen not to work. The plastic unit just would not do the job. There was not enough support in the original door frame to firmly seat and support the plastic piece and it twisted and pressed to tightly against the screen roll to allow it to function. After three attempts to see if we were doing something wrong we ended up using the original metal piece and the installation of the screened window went fine and putting the rest of the door back together went as indicated in the vidwo..

Glad the video helped. I should have mentioned the yellow parts now that I think about it. For the most part I only use the original parts, the other pieces in the bag I save as backup replacement parts. And your right about trying to not damage the screen when you reinstall. I wish the factory would angle, or at least round, the sharp edges on the hidden parts of the frame when reinstalling the screen. Those sharp corners try like heck to damage the new screen!

Great video! Really helped me replace the spring. I'm having trouble getting the screen to roll up with the glass however. Is there something I need to do activate it?

No, if done correctly it should move up and down with no problem. My suspicion is the roll screen had lost tension before installation. Unfortunately, not much you can do except get another replacement as there's no way to remove it now without cutting the existing screen. Sorry for the bad news.

Great video. I cannot get the cover off that covers the retractable screen. I removed the two screws and pool in pry and I can’t get it off. On your video it just falls off in your hand. Have you had this issue before? Do I need to take the door apart?

Yes, I have. Sometimes they just put it on there too tight. The only thing holding it on are the 2 small screws. I've had to rock it back and forth, even spray some WD-40 between the door and the top of the panel to get it to come loose. Patience and elbow grease (and a bigger hammer ;))

Just pull harder. Sometimes its really on there. Ive had to rock it back and forth to get it break free . Sometimes i use a rubber mallet to tap onit and break it free. Those are the only 2 screws holding it on.
