This fix cost me $4.50 for a can of cleaner and about 12 minutes to do the work. This is definitely something that you can do yourself.
This video will show you how to fix a mushy brake lever. My front brakes also made a swishing sound that went away when i pressed the front brake lever slightly.
This is a fix if there is no leak. If you are losing brake fluid, you have a leak somewhere. That requires a different fix.
The first thing you do is take off the brake calipers. Start on the side opposite the master cylinder, which is usually the left side of the bike. Have someone pump the brakes until the pistons close and the pads are touching. Then, spray a quality brake cleaner into there, Clean the pistons and surrounding area. What happens is there is no protection and grime and whatnot get up in there and stops the pistons from moving freely. Cleaning this will remove the gunk and allow the pistons to once again move freely. Do both sides. This is a god time to replace the pads if they need it. After you get it cleaned, take a puddy knife and pry the pads apart. Then, use a screwdriver to push the pistons back in place. Then, throw the caliper back on your bike. You will be amazed at how well this works.
