You are an excellent teacher! I've been around mechanics a long time and I can say your a top notch instructor/teacher. A student would have to be totally non-mechanically inclined not to understand what you've presented in your video. Keep up the good work.

Thanks heaps for this. I was so lucky to come across it after a few hours wondering why my brakes were not working, even though I could feel air pressure. Turns out I had to prime the master cylinder. Wow, they're rock solid now!

Dude, I am so glad I found this. After dicking around with my brakes for the last couple days, I needed to know the behavior a master cylinder SHOULD have before deciding to rebuild it. Bingo. Mine is no good. Needs a rebuild. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this very valuable and easy-to-understand lesson, one of your great points was to block the outlet with a finger to prime the master cylinder (like priming a water pump). I followed your lesson and it saved my day and lots of money as I was ready to buy a new master cylinder. Have a great weekend and keep up the good work well done, Cheers !

As of now you are my GO TO guy! I recently bought a 99 yamaha royal star venture that I'm quickly learning has some issues. (Get what you pay for). You have taken all my fear of screwing up rebuilding my clutch master cylinder in a matter of a few mins. TY sir. Would actually love to pic your brain a min to make sure a rebuild is necessary or if I may be ok to take apart, clean really well & get by for a bit longer, but I'm sure I'm better off just rebuilding it & being done with it.

Very helpful amigo, gonna put on stainless steel hoses cause I accidently filled dot5 synthetic crap into my gsxr 1000 when it suppose to use dot 4, and I bleed it prior to that, but now people say u can't fully bleed out those rubber hoses of silicone crap, instead get new lines and rebuild or get new cylinders. So i'ma just rebuild even though they don't leak.

While attempting to bench test the master cylinder on my 2000 Springer, remove the banjo bolt and fluid line, pump up the brake lever, and while covering up the hole, I feel a bit of suction, but when I remove my finger, not a bit of fluid comes out. Hello again Shane. Thanks for a great video on testing the master. I’m having an issues rebuilding the VFR’s front brake master cyl... I’m going to do the bench pressure test tomorrow. Sure is a let down when everything else was going together well. I really do think that the air hole is blocked, and it needs to be cleaned out or drilled out. Not sure what to poke it with for now.
@URBANENGINEER7 жыл бұрын
It builds pressure (and suction if covered and released), but no fluid will shoot out. One of the holes must be plugged I guess? Please advise.
@URBANENGINEER7 жыл бұрын
**Solution** Doing the finger prime (helping it build pressure) has solved the issue. Put it on the bike and pumped it about 25 times and then pressure finally built. Weird. I am glad you have the video out Shane!!!

Hello, I am also on the maintenance right now. I'm also changing the brake lever for one made of aluminum. There you have to remove the screws on the lever. That is, unscrew. So you probably then set the sniffing game. Do you know it too? Adjustment of the sniffing play? have read that one must eisntellen the hand brake play and then a half turn further in screwed. How does such a handbrake game look like? and how do you notice when it is the right time? I hope you have been able to gather experience. BMW R850R Bj 2000

I have a rare go kart with mater cylinder issues. It is a go kart that has not been used for a while. We replaced all the fluid but it works for a while and then it looses the pressure and leaks through the front of the cylinder. Any Advice?

What causes a brake system to apply the pads on the rotor when the bike is sitting and not in use? My back brakes can be depressed with a free turning back wheel but when I come back several days later to use my bike the back brakes are fully applied and the back wheel is locked up and my brake peddle is very stiff. I'm about to rebuild the rear master cylinder and I'm hoping that it will fix the problem. I'm a little pessimistic because there are a lot of guys online with thee same bike having the same problem and they say that the problem is still present after rebuilding the master cylinder.

What is the best way to paint the master cylinder before the rebuild?
@How2Wrench5 жыл бұрын
Great question. I bet someone has a good video on that better than I could state...but here goes... I used a really good "etching primer" and bake the master cylinder under a heat lamp. Then on assembly, I really wet down and be super careful with the brake fluid. Thanks for commenting and adding value to our community! Why not screw a bolt in the master cylinder exit and pump it until it builds pressure wouldnt this prove the master cylinder is able to build and hold pressure?

Shane, Is it possible that the slave CLUTCH unit may be corroded, preventing the master CLUTCH unit from building pressure? (Rebuilt the master clutch cylinder but it will not build pressure.) Only saw this AFTER replacing rebuilt unit back on the motorcycle!

How long does it normally take to bleed the rear brakes if bango at the caliper has been loosen. I cleaned my piston and calipers down, put it back together bleed the line but I can't get any pressure in the line. Is it normal that rear brake pedal not have any resistance in it after putting it back together? First my front brakes went out now its my back brakes, give me a brake. The videos I see on KZbin are easy to follow but when I do it it something always goes wrong

My question is on an 2004 honda foreman front brakes. Have a very mushy brake handle, need to pump several times to build pressure. How do I know if i need to rebuild the master cylinder or replace the 4 cylinders on the wheels? Also when I squeeze the brake I only see the piston side of the wheel cylinders move maybe 1/8". The adjuster side does not move. Thank you for your help and time!!!
@How2Wrench4 жыл бұрын
On an 2004 its not unlikely that the brake system has never been serviced. With 16 yr old parts, you really need to look at the rubber lines for flexing too. This will cause the "mushy" feeling. I'm the intern studying under Shane. He's on the road training techs and not here to ask this week. I fInally made it to your comment going down the list...just an FYI...he literally logs in and answers member questions daily! Consider joining...best $1.99 you'll spend this month 😁 One of these days I hope to move from the office to the shop! Wish I knew the answer but don't want to bs you. He couldn't screen these requests fast enough... He has a few other tricks up his sleeve he plans on making videos on. If you need help sooner choose and option below! That’s a great question for Shane directly! We are just the social media team. Shane does answer questions when he get's back around to non members eventually so hang tight, FYI >>>> he does member ones daily! He just returned from overseas training techs and his inbox is slammed with requests. He is scheduling time each day again to answer techline orders. He does not have the bandwidth to provide free email replies as his schedule is full with shop customers, training schedules, and one on ones. There's good news though! Shane has 2 solutions for you. One is a deep dive one-on-one with him with video, email and phone support. The other is a "quick fan support" option when it's a quick answer and just helps support the time for him to stop wrenching or training and get you in the direction that a free video had you close. Links to each are below. Hope this message makes sense to you as a decent human being that also works for a living and gets it! Make it a great day! The one-on-one service. I cannot get my brakes to work and I’m about to throw the whole damn bike out the window. I’m so exhausted from this. I’m going to try testing the master cylinder this way. My question is this. If it works, as soon as you remove your finger now there’s air back in the lower chamber. When you put it back on the hose you just introduced a ton of air into the spot you were trying to remove it from. Am I misunderstanding?

I have a 2004 Yamaha Road Star xv 1700. It has the a break caliper on both sides of the front wheel, and a tea under the front end of the bike. I wanted to change the fluid, so I run new fluid through it, but as I was riding my bike, the front break started locking up on me. I had to release the pressure, and ride it back to my shop without any front breaks. Now For the life of me, I can't get any type of a break back on it! I've tried everything as far as bleeding it goes. Do you think it is the master cylinder gone bad?

I have bench tested my master which is operating as you explained but I'm still not able to build pressure. My brake lever has no resistance when pumping it, however fluid does come out from bleeder screw. Would there be an issue down in the caliper area that's causing the failure of pressure not building in the line? I know my master is doing its job. I own a Honda XR650L, all work in it has been done by my mechanic but this has been getting expensive so I bought a manual with the help of KZbin started doing what I can myself. I have followed step-by-step and running out of options as safety check approaches. What am I doing wrong? Please advise Shane Conley

My Front Master cylinder lose the pressure in 2 days if i don't use my motorcycle. I have to re pump it more than 30 times then it gets back to normal but bit soft. What could be the problem? There are no leakage. It is axial Master cylinder. Brake fluid level is fine too
@PapodeArmas5 жыл бұрын
I had a similar problem on my bike these past couple of days, i would bleed the brakes get a nice lever feel and after a day or two my lever feel would be mushy and i had air in the system. mind you i have new brake lines and new fluid along with new pads. ended up being my master cylinder needing a rebuild. which is pretty easy to do and it solved the problem. ebay sells these kits for almost every bike i believe. it should be called something like master cylinder rebuild kit , hope that helps.
@simonspencer3976 жыл бұрын
Just came across your videos when I was rebuilding my master cylinder. When I finished I covered the outlet and pressurised it by pumping air which it seemed to compress ok (quick puff if air when I removed my finger). Surely that's enough to prove it will build pressure? Or must it be tested with fluid?
@djohnson36786 жыл бұрын
do it with fluid. BUT , long as it has good suction to withdraw the pressure from which it gives, then it is good.
