Always amazes me that the solution to tiny amounts of fuel being spilled and evaporating from open/broken vents on a small percentage of cans was to make sure everyone spilled ten times as much fuel every time they use every single can. Gotta love stupid regulations.

And the the stupid peopid who came up with the idea behind these cans. If it isn't broke..don't fix it! I still have one old plastic can I use with a top that simply screws off and has the nozzle inside. Pull it out, screw it on, unscrew the vent cap and blamo! Easy! I'll never get rid of it but do wish I could find another one like it. The people who still have them ain't getting rid of them

I hadn't gotten the memo on these new cans, and bought a 5 gallon can a few years ago to go with our new log splitter. Turns out I can't lift 5 gallons in one hand and push back the nozzle with the other, and there is no place on the log splitter gas inlet to push the nozzle. Got a nice fistful of gasoline 200 yards from the nearest water. That can went back to the hardware store that afternoon! Since then we found a few older cans at yard sales and flea markets. Then, on a recent trip to Canada, we discovered they don't necessarily follow stupid US regulations...
@williewonka6694 Жыл бұрын
The real purpose was not to prevent small spills, the regulations are simply a very small part of an overall strategy of destroying the fossil fuel industry. Just try to find consumer grade oil based paint, it's virtually impossible as government has mandated water based paint. It's a completely pervasive approach.

Auto or home insurance wouldn’t pay attention to this either. Plus can’t imagine God forbid anyone has a house fire in their home or shop/detached garage and the can gets burned up there even being a trace of missing plastic pieces in a dern gas can. Oh sorry guys it appears we can’t find a spring that we believe this gas can had at one time, we can’t cover your loss. Get real dude

These "fixes" seem reasonable.....HOWEVER..... If fire investigators determine the cause of a fire had anything to do with "fixes" to your fuel storage your home insurance company will have an issue. That vent may be OK for deisel but for gasoline that vent you install has to hold about 9 PSI of vapor pressure. With a pop-in vent that is unlikely.

I bought 3 of those cans the day I bought my green diesel tractor (5 years ago). Luckily I set 2 on the ground to fill. I overflowed the first one because of the fire preventer in the filler neck. What a mess. The 3rd untouched can went straight back to the store. A few months later I was still using those cans. The fill on my tractor is chest height so I end up trying to balance the can on it's spout. For whatever reason when I pressed the valve to start the flow I lost control of the can, the stem popped out of the retaining nut on the can letting diesel go everywhere. Now I use Flo Fast cans with a very convenient pump. Pricey but it makes it easier for this old man. I would have given the cans to a friend but I like my friends.

It's been so many years since I've bought a new gas can that it was news to me. What a pain in the ass! My cans are the old ones. No leaks, no issues no problems.
@jul14405 ай бұрын
Actually, your cans emit vapor. Problem.

Thanks for the modification information! I tried using an un-modded can a couple of years ago. These spouts/cans are not "old man friendly". When trying to lift 5gal of diesel into a RAM 2500, while trying to work the safety shut off lever and pressing the safety-spout into the lip of the fuel tank, I ended up with more diesel down my shirt and pants than into the tank! I'll be modifying mine today!

Thank you for making this video. I have previously purchased kits that come with a standard spout that replaces the original government engineered POS along with the new vent, but the replacement spout usually will not fit back into the fuel can like the original. Your approach not only saves money (no new spout required), but is more functional too.

How's she goin'? These gas cans are sure a pain in the rear end!!! These were nice changes. It's been my experience with these changes you made, you spill a lot less fuel. And at the cost of fuel these days, no one wants to spill any!! Thanks for sharing and take care!!!

Yup the safety measures make them a lot less safe and worse for the environment. Quick fix though. Thanks for your support. Have a great weekend.

I just took off the spout and used a funnel but modifying the spout like this is a great idea

Great vid. I actually use those large water containers from walmart and modified them with fuel hardware since the thread pitch is the same and costs half as much.

Hell yeah, brother! I’m right there with you! They not only make them where you have to modify them to be usable, but they also charge an arm and a leg and half another arm for them. And I don’t like the fuel prices at all.

Only thing I do differently: I remove the inner part of the spout all together and put a cap on the spout when not in use. Great video

I actually thought about doing that but I was thinking I would probably lose the cap. Thanks for the comment Jerry.... and thanks for watching!

Sure, used to occasionally spill a tiny bit of fuel here or there....but with these new dumb gas containers you are absolutely guaranteed to spill so much more than you ever spilled before plus break your back on the 5 gallon ones because you have to hold it sooooo long since it pours sooooo slowly. Great video!

Thanks for this video. First time I used the "improved" cans was a bit of a fiasco, my dad generously gave my a couple of his old primitive(functional) cans.

oh my gosh the hubby sent me to town ( takes 30 min to get there and 30 min back ) to fill up a couple diesel cans and one had that plastic screen inside. It was beyond frustrating as the pump kept shutting off. I finally gave up! luckily one of the cans was the older version without the screen otherwise it would have been a totally wasted trip! Glad to find your video so I can get rid of that screen!

Thank you. I was just looking at fixing my gas cans a couple of days ago after spilling more gas than I put in my lawn mower.

Before they made these 'cans' safer and more environmentally 'friendly', I never spilled as much fuel all over the place.
@jaygeistkemper30616 ай бұрын
Agreed, spilled more gas trying to used the gorilla spring-loaded ones than in all the years before this “safety” mod. 👍🏻for this video and 👍🏻to Kolschesky for mentioning the flexible spout kit from Tractor Supply!
@LT3906 ай бұрын
I've spilled more gas using the spring loaded nozzles than removing the dumb nozzle all together and pouring gas into my lawn mower, weedwacker, chainsaw, etc, directly from the wide mouth opening with no funnel. These new cans and nozzles are the dumbest thing since capless fuel filler necks on today's cars.

??? Why spend all that $$ at tractor supply when for $2, $3, you can get a very good old school can at a garage sale. I like tractor supply, fleet farm etc too, but I like my $$ better

It amazes me that we "allow" other people to force us to use things that don't work, we don't want, we didn't ask for, and benefit NO ONE. I'm pretty sure this could be considered a canary in the coal mine for our other freedoms, too. So, what the hell are you going to do about it?

Others have to protect people from themselves. Can you imagine what America would look like without the EPA? We would be living in a treeless garbage dump.

I am dreading the day my old rubbermade 6 gallon cans have to go to the big gas can in the sky. They are reaching 20+ years old now and still work great like day one. I just purchase replacement spigots for them from time to time and keep them out of the landfill and me from going crazy with the new EPA mandated cans. Keep up the good work!

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! You have made a non-functional product functional again. Also, I am happy to see that the nozzle from these cans fit the (right angle) Walmart cans that I can't fix in this same way... so... double win for me!

Thank you for the complete transformation of Midwest fuel cans. I have usually just removed red locking latch on spout leaving spring and removing that anti blow back screen filter thing and works well when filling generator because slower is better when it’s only 5 gallons. I still find it difficult to fuel vehicles with it. If you could incorporate dual handles which is nice with longer goose neck. Just a thought
