How could someone who’s never trained mma judge a fight. They don’t understand being in front of someone

Its crazy! They get their judges from boxing. However long it takes for someone to fully understand grappling, is A LOT longer than they train these grandfathered in boxing judges.

The nuances in MMA isn’t understandable by the average person because of how diverse it is being a Mixture of all martial arts. Training or deep study is the only way to even get a surface level understanding

World class coaches or athletes would make the best judges with some training, but there's a simple reason you can't use them. They're in too deep. They know the people fighting personally, trained with them or at some point against them, know they might have to face them in the future etc. They simply can't be neutral. So using them as judges is off the table

5 judges would be nice

We need NEW judges I think, not more of them. But 5 judges would be good, I just don't like that MMA uses boxing judges.

EA sports UFC 4 uses a good scoring system . They should adopt a similar system

I think it should be 5 judges, and I think they should each get a red and a blue button in front of them. When the fighter out of the red corner lands a measly leg kick or jab, quick 1 second tap to the red button. When the fighter out of the blue corner lands a takedown, quick 1 second tap, if he progresses to a more dominant position, 2 second tap, if he gets a submission going, 3-5 second tap depending on how deep the sub is. When red lands a huge right hook that wobbles blue, 5 second tap, or tap and hold till blue recovers or just gets to a slightly less exposed position. Then tally up the total time each fighter got their button tapped for either round by round or cumulatively. Make very clear training videos with examples of a fighter that’s only slightly dazed from a shot vs full chicken dance, the difference in a Hail Mary triangle choke attempt vs a choke that’s actually threateningly close to being completed. There’d still be a slight margin for bias toward one technique or another but it would make judging a lot more cut, clean and simple and you’d probably also be able to sync up when a certain judge was pressing a certain fighters button, go and see what that fighter was doing at that time stamp and be able to tell was this button press warranted or are we seeing a pattern of bias in this judges view of the fight.

This is a nice theory, but fighting is way too fast and chaotic to actually do this. What do you do if they're both in the pocket and unload combo after combo? How do you differentiate between the quality of strikes? That's totally subjective. What's more damaging in the long run? Jabs to the face? Knees to the body? Leg kicks? It totally depends who's using them. A leg kick by Edson Barboza or Justin Gaehtje is not the same as a leg kick by Conor McGregor or Max Holloway. Like it or not, scoring fights is subjective and requires interpretation. If no one gets finished, the outcome will always piss some people off.
