Great tips. I store used nozzles in a glass mason jar of paint thinner so that they never dry out till I use them again. And, to keep from getting in this situation, I put a tiny dab of Vaseline on the spray tip immediately after use and just wipe it off prior to the next use. I’ve found that works 100% of the time. And a small jar of Vaseline lasts years.

Great tips! I always keep the nozzles from used-up paints and carb cleaner, etc. I also use brake cleaner or carb cleaner to rinse the nozzles immediately after every use, same as you, but I also give the place the nozzle attaches to the can a squirt too. I never spray upside down to clear the nozzle, as you said, it wastes propellent. You'll quickly run out if you do a lot of small jobs with one can. Last time I had a bad can of primer that kept immediately clogging the nozzle due to lumps, like yours from 3:45 to 5:00 🙂, I used a spring-loaded center punch, punched a hole near the top, and the punch tip kept it sealed. I quickly removed the punch and put my finger over the hole, then went outside, and shook the can one more time, turned the can upside-down, removed my finger, and quickly sprayed the part I needed done. It worked so beautifully I really wished I had videoed it! When I was done, I turned the can upright, letting the pressure out but saving the remaining paint too! The spraying took all of about 2-3 seconds. PS - I love the dog videos at the end, especially this one!
@foxwood674 жыл бұрын
Thats a great tip. Heres another one.. always invert the can when your done painting and spray until its just propellant coming out usually within 2-3 seconds . Will never clog and good to go next time. Works 99% of time.
@chrissewell16084 жыл бұрын
Works good for cleaning the spray nozzle too. Unless its already covered in paint.
@TheTwabster2 жыл бұрын
As reported by many others, this is from a bygone era. Most cans 10 yrs old or newer no longer "clean-out" by inverting & spraying upside down for 5 seconds. Nowadays they are designed to spray at all angles, so it's rare to find one to "clean-out" by this method.

You all can use soldering gun tip and make a cone. 2nd car parts stores they sell emergency CO2 tier inflation kits.. Use CO2 and you can store spray can after refill.

As AJK says, float the can in hot water in the sink and everything inside the can will redissolve when you shake it up, then test it again. Certain products always have to be heated in water before use because they either sit on the shelf too long or the products are too shy to come out w/o help. P.S. I had 2 cans of same brand and color paint do this to me this afternoon, but it turns out that one had a male nozzle and one a female. The can with male nozzle finally cooperated after some intensive "therapy."

Brilliant idea! Additionally you could used regulated argon, nitrogen or co2 instead of air and avoid adding oxygen which could make the paint hard. Maybe using some rubber hose around where the nozzle goes into might work as well as long as your in pressure is slightly more than cans pressure. Might be prudent to put can in nylon duffle bag in case something goes wrong avoiding injury or a mess.

You can bring hard paint or putty back to life in many cases. You need to have a shaking or mixing machine that marries with the container of hardened material. In my instances I used a 2 gallon paint shaker from a paint store. Mixes 1 gallon each side. Use a balancer if need be. Add some water for water base and mineral spirits or turpentine for oil base. Don't add too much thinner but not too little either. A proper shaker or even a drill with a whip mixer attached will usually bring hardened material back to life. It can be helpful on a budget or if you had easy access to otherwise waste material that can be utilized with confidence. We waste a lot of good stuff. r.

After using a rattle can and before putting it away I use brake cleaner to: 1) Spray the front of the nozzle 2) Spray through the nozzle into the stem end and 3) Spray a shot or two down into the the top of the can where the nozzle attaches. This will displace any residual paint on the atmosphere side of the valve. I found this to work for lengthy storage almost 100% of the time however If on a rare occasion you find it plugged after a long period of storage, I use brake cleaner down into the can instead of air, by pushing down on the valve while simultaneously spraying brake cleaner into the can. A couple short shots is usually adequate but you may have to repeat a couple times. I do this into a trash bucket, also using a rag to trap escaping paint as shown in this video.

In a different attempt, I took a flat needled syringe and I suctioned up some paint thinner and dispensed it directly into the nozzle. I wish could remember if it was done on the can that now works.

The problem with mine are the nozzles! Even 100 psi of air doesn't seem to be able to blow through them, yet if I take off the nozzle of a new can, all my 'problem' cans spray just fine! For those of us that don't have compressed air, pour a 1/2" of acetone in the cap and store upside. Next day should be clean and clear to use. Even expanding foam spray works. Simply snip the applicator small enough to fit in the/a cap uninstalled and store upside down overnight and wipe away blobs the next day with a Q-tip. Remember to buy some 12" lengths of tubing to fit over the applicator to finish off that can, and yes, the expanding foam can blow that replacement tube off if your not quick enough.

I think we all have had blocked can valves :-( Small anti persperent cans often have a tiny side hole in the stubby tube, as it gets pushed down past a rubber washer the contents escapes through the tiny hole up the stubby tube. Such a simple idea, but i imagine for paint its a no no. I too have a wd40 can with the novel spray head and tube, that will be put to one side for cheaper sprays. I tested putting different gases into a paint can with a lid and they all seamed to still let the paint skin over. "Air" is 80% nitrogen anyway so I guess that's why that doesn't work. The only gas I really didn't test was pure oxygen. I have removed the valve out of a propane 1# bottle. I made a special tool from a larger nail(drilled then a slot cut into tip). If I recall there was a nylon seal and some basic rubber orings. I think I damaged them by pulling them out.

@@sixtyfiveford lol.. Yes. I made a similar tool . On the other end I ground it into looking like a 2 prong spork so I could scoop under the other Schrader valve that serves as a PRV, to vent it when refilling but its still easier to just unscrewed the bottle and burp it through the fill hole then screw it back onto the 20lb bottle and repeat. Anyway, thanks for your reply. I just noticed my previous comment. Where some might say im being redundant, I say consistent. Lol but hey, about the nitrogen, have you tried pure nitrogen or basing it on the air being 80% nitrogen? Cuz what if its the other 20% that's drying it out? I know nitrogen will keep things from oxidizing, but only if it's at the 100% level. But it seems like propane would work since it's a liquid too. There's a paint additive air brushers use to keep their paint wet longer. I forget what it's called. It's possible that dish soap might be a substitute for it. I forget. Also, I think it was for acrylic paint. I'll mess around with the propane bottle a little more. I'll reply again if I figure out anything. thanks again..

Gracias amigo! Didn’t have a compressor but a bicycle pump just did the trick!

what about the spray cans with the blue nozzle? pressing down on the top drives a pin into the can tube. i have tried using a very small nail which works some what, but would be interested in a better technique.

I wonder if you can use a mityvac to draw a vacuum instead. That may pull out the clog and avoid introducing air into the can.
@sixtyfiveford4 жыл бұрын
Generally the pressure in the can is 75-100psi pushing the clog. Warm up the can and the pressure increases. I will say the air introduced is so minimal I haven't noticed any issues.

@@sixtyfiveford Yeah, but don't you think in addition to the pressure in the can going out, pulling 20-30 inches of mercury from the outside will unclog it? I'm tempted to try it but I have no clogged cans.

Gets messy, but sometimes works. Sometimes depending on the size of the job it's easier to just punch a hole in the can, pour the contents into a small HVLP spray gun and be done with it.
