I use carb-cleaner and attach the straw to the nozzle I am trying to clean. The REAL problem is when the CAN gets clogged.

Right..... my tips are clean, so how do I unclog the can or the tip on the can?
@Fortsand110 ай бұрын
I use brake parts cleaner and I clean out the tips after each use. What about when the cab is clogged? I have two slightly used Krylon primer cans and the cans are clogged below the tips and this stuff is expensive. I hate to toss an almost full can of product because the can is clogged.

I’m in the situation right now! Several cans of white primer paint but the can is clogged? Any trick to save this can???
@johngranato26737 ай бұрын
@@roberthoward9482 I have had limited success by removing the nozzle and placing a drop or two of penetrating oil into the opening at the top of the can. Then I allow a few days before I try to spray again. In fact, it's the primers that have given me the most trouble. Especially, spray cans that spray in any direction--including upside down (like Rustoleum). Because of this, you can't turn the can upside down and clear the nozzle as was the case in the good-old-days.

Great video on spray paint tips,but what about when the pain can is the problem ?
@Jonathan-jo2xu Жыл бұрын
If the paint can is the problem wouldn't that mean that there's no pressure/accelerant in it (pump it up). or that there's no paint in it(Through it out) although it's straw in the top of the can is clogged, just pour a little of the acetone on top and then press the nozzle with a tool

The clog isn't in the cap, it's in the stem (inside the can). Tips?

Try dunking the stem in acetone. It's worth a shot.

Old cans can also dry up in the can, so they won't work at all, but I'm thinking of making some kind of adapter with cellulose thinner, that can be attached to the can, and sit there "for ever", and perhaps dissolve the clog (I have over 100 good 5+ yo cans to save). I have had no succes with acetone, but have had nozzles in cellulose thinner for a long time, without them being ruined, and the couple I've looked at, were so softened, that I could pick/blow the pait out - but the tiny "diffuser" blew off one of them, so be aware of that, and blow into a cloth or something to collect it. Haven't looked at them for a long time, but I will get back to you on the subject, whan I have checked. And - as an artist/"everything" I have played a bit with punching a tiny hole in the side of cans close to the bottom, and then using the leftover spray for artzy fartzy stuff.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try it.
@CONEHEADDK3 жыл бұрын
@@Commandodesigns Not just feedback - also for all the other nerds here. I have just checked my 2-4 weeks soaked in cellulose thinner two different nozzles, and besides them not being softened at all, the paint, that after short time just let go of the plastic, was actually dissolved 100%, so the thinner had turned pinkish, and the skins that that just let go of the plastic after 1-2 days, and were floating around,, were gone. But - be aware of the rubbery sealant in the lid - they often are not able to handle the thinner/acetone - and when I shook the small glass jar, the thinner ran out a bit - which it didn't do after 1-2 days.

@@Commandodesigns Update - the nozzles have been in the jar since last comment, and are still in fine shape - just blew one, and air went through. I see no reason to believe, the spray wont be nice, but I drop an update on that too, once I have had a reason to test it.

You can drill a small hole strait through the top of the spray tip and use both hands to press the edges of the nosle and aim the top at what you want to paint. Sprays out the hole like normal but a heavier coat.

I am sure you know that acetone is flammable and extremely poisonous. However, as a lady I know that fingernail polish remover lots of times is made of acetone, so if you don't have plain acetone, look at your fingernail polish and you will probably see acetone as the first ingredient. I used to date a chemistry student at Georgis Tech who told me this fact.

Novice here,but ive had luck maintaining the paint tips hole(only) by wiping them off with a disposable SD alcohol pad after each use. Less effective on dry paint but still works on a moderately dirty tip b4 spraying. Won't stop a clog in the stem but helps in negating a poor or erratic spray. The thicker ones that cost apx. $3 for 100 are better than the $1 cheapos. $1 ones can be found near bandages in stores. Diabetic section or a pharmacy for the $3 ones.

After using a rattle can and before putting it away I use brake cleaner to: 1) Spray the front of the nozzle 2) Spray through the nozzle into the stem end and 3) Spray a shot or two down into the the top of the can where the nozzle attaches. This will displace any residual paint on the atmosphere side of the valve. I found this to work for lengthy storage almost 100% of the time however If on a rare occasion you find it plugged after a long period of storage, I use brake cleaner down into the can instead of air, by pushing down on the valve while simultaneously spraying brake cleaner into the can. A couple short shots is usually adequate but you may have to repeat a couple times. I do this into a trash bucket, also using a rag over the top of the can to trap escaping paint.

Unfortunately this didn't work for my Rust-o-leum fat nozzles. I had two clogged ones and tried four times with each one but it didn't clear the paint. I tested the can and knew it still sprayed so the issue was the cap.

If you have a compressor in your workshop, find an airgun with a nozzle (or drill one out to) the right size to be a close fit over the stem. Dribble acetone into the stem hole, leave a minute, then use air. Works for me on Rustoleum cans so old I can't remember buying them.

I took a can that was completely out of paint. Then spray to empty out all the air. I drilled and attached a small valve stem on the can, and use a hand pump to add a little air pressure. After painting. I take off the spray cap, and put it on this can of air to clean out any paint that will dry and clog up the spray cap. The bad part. You have to buy paint that uses this style cap, or make another air can for that type of cap.

Your skin has no resistance to acetone. When you soak in water, your fingers get wrinkled. That's water slowly entering the skin. Acetone is almost immediate. Your liver will work it out of the bloodstream, but it's asking a lot of your liver.

Caps are still in tact , did not melt at all, and once that paint is dry in the nozzle, done deal. I keep the jars to show all those who think it works. I use acetone on the daily, it's the only solvent that removes the paint I use off my hands at the end of the day.
