Fix COOLANT LEVEL LOW Error! Land Rover Discovery 4 LR4

Hi! Did you know that although the coolant level in your Discovery 4 / LR4 is correct, the "Coolant Level Low" message is caused by the coolant reservoir float or sensor?
My name is Peter and today I'm going to fix a very common problem on the Land Rover Discovery 4 / LR 4, which is changing the coolant expansion tank. In this video you will see how easy it is to change the tank yourself and refill and bleed the cooling system.
The problem:
On our last trip, the warning "Coolant level low" sometimes appeared on the information display in the car. At first I was a little shocked, because how could this happen? But after checking the level of the tank and the engine temperature, it was clear that there was no leak in the cooling system.
The only possibility was that the sensor had failed. After a few minutes, the message disappeared, but kept coming back over the next few days.
Solution:
I replaced the entire tank, because the sensor is not the problem! In most cases, the fault is caused by a stuck float. You can try to clean the tank and get the float working again, but I recommend replacing the entire tank.

Hi Peter, Just saw this DYI video. It's very intuitive and helpful. I had the same issue with our 2008 LR3. Will try to fix it this coming week. I do have one issue regarding the windshield washer is not squirting out liquid on the front and the rear windshield. Just wondering if you know how to check and fix this problem. Thanks in advance,

Hello, I also had this problem/warning on my Discovery 4 for a longer time. The change of this tank really solved it, for quite a fair price at the professional garage. Before, other “experts” changed water pump etc for way more cost, with still coolant leaking afterwards. Hm… Thanks for creating and sharing this video!

"everything is fine" in the same sentence with "Discovery 4" is practically impossible in reality - as you might know ;) Indeed I will try the Diesel Additive (another Video of yours) soon, sounds like a good thing for the engine. And recently I changed the Actuator/E-Motor for the lower tailgate lock myself (Tailgate wouldn't open any longer which is not a great situation with dog + family). Haha, ja da ist sch was wahres dran 😂 Aber ich muss gestehen, ich hatte noch nichts schlimmeres. 🤞 Ich finde das Additiv macht besonders bei tieferen Temperaturen einen guten Job und der Discovery springt extrem leicht an. Jetzt im Sommer wäre mir allerdings kein Unterschied aufgefallen. ☺️ Bezüglich der Heckklappe überlege ich diesen innenliegenden mechanischen Öffner zu installieren um die Klappe im Fall der Fälle öffnen zu können. Ich bin bei diesem Channel hier schon mal über den mechanischen Öffner drüber gestolpert: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnrHqaWljbx_fbs - Er ist ja überhaupt mein heimlicher "Star" hier auf KZbin, ich könnte ihm stundenlang zuschauen, habe auch meinen "Heckklappen-Fix" von dort. Hallo Peter. Ich glaube alle Land Rover haben nach einer gewissen Zeit das gleiche Problem. Wir haben 2 Discos und bei beiden hatten wir diesen Fehler zur gleichen Zeit. Und nein, man muss die Klammer drücken und nicht rausziehen um den Stecker abziehen zu können.

Hi Stevottty! I had this done last year by a specialist - who also flushed the gearbox at the same time. The normal gearbox oil change itself is not the problem, but I would definitely recommend buying an aftermarket or the improved version of the tub cover, which consists of two parts. The cover and the tube are separate. This makes the installation much easier and the gearbox does not have to be lifted to reattach the cover with the tube. Many greetings, Peter

wondering if it would be better to remove the coolant from the reservoir via a pump before removing the tank. Also when removing the tank, does coolant gush out of the lower hose?

Yes, unfortunately it will still drip. So it's best to either loosen the hose under the radiator and drain it there, or close the hoses with a hose clamp and then remove the tank. I will probably open the hose under the radiator and drain the coolant the next time I change it. Best, Peter

@Rei The tyres in the video are my off-road tyres. These are BF Goodrich K02 265/65/18 with Delta rims and 25mm spacer on each side and axle. The ones on the photo are 255/55/19 winter tires on Land Rover rims without spacers.

@Rei no these are Delta WP Rims. If you have the Disco 4 with under 200 horsepower than it’s possible to fit 18” rims. Otherwise you’ll need special rims.

Hi! Also bei mir war der integriert bzw. war der Sensor dabei. Der Sensor alleine würde allerdings auch nicht mehr als 8-10€ kosten. *Edit: Meist steckt auch nur der Schwimmer im Ausgleichsbehälter. Selten das der Sensor nicht funktioniert. Theoretisch könntest du den Tank auch reinigen und versuchen die Ablagerungen um den Schwimmer zu entfernen. Ist leider jedoch nicht immer möglich.
